Baby Products Reviews of bumGenius 3.0 One-Size Cloth Diaper

Customer Review: Best cloth diapers we've used so far.
Summary: 5 Stars

Our baby is only 6 weeks old, but we've used mostly Bumgenius 3.0 and a few assorted other brands that were passed down to us by friends. Of all the brands, Bumgenius has the best record in terms of leaking - only 3 times so far, and I'm talking about a dozen changes per day with all sorts of poopage. I suspect that we didn't make the diapers snug enough when we had leakage - changing diapers at 3 am while half asleep will do that to you!

The only time we used disposables was before our baby's cord fell off. No matter how we dried to fold down the front of Bumgenius diapers, they still rubbed on her belly button. We used Pamper's Swaddlebees for less than 2 weeks until her belly button was clear.

They are huge with our baby being less than 9 pounds, and so we do have to put her in some larger sized outfits or pants to accomodate them.

Overall, these make having cloth diapers a breeze and I don't understand why many people are so resistant to changing over from disposables. Our brief experience with disposable diapers proved how expensive they were and how quickly we filled our diaper pail with something that would hang around the garbage dump for a long, long time.

Added on 04/30/2009:
Our baby is 11 weeks old now. My only complaint now is that these are very warm for long hours on a hot/humid day. That mainly means we have to check her diaper more frequently to avoid heat rash.

I noticed, too, that they can add uncomfortable bulk when we spend the day with her in a Bjorn baby carrier.

Overall, I still love these cloth diapers when we are at home and during cooler temperatures. Not sure what we'll do for the dog days of summer, though.

Customer Review: Best diaper I have tried
Summary: 5 Stars

These diapers are awesome! My daughter is 3 months old, and has been able to wear them since she was around about 3 weeks old (before then they really seemed too bulky & she is average in size). We use these exclusively at night with the snap-folded insert since they contain the mess better than anything (including disposable diapers which always leaked poo for us)--no leaks out the legs or up the back and they are very absorbent. The microfiber pocket inserts really hold a good amount of wetness and the soft material cover seems to keeps the moisture away from her body better then plain cotton diapers. The outer waterproof cover is softer then some other covers available...but since it is expensive we reserve it for nighttime or when we are out on longer outings rather than routine use. Cleans up well, but we can't yet say anything about durability & growing up with baby since we have only used them for about 2 months so far.
**Update at 5 months** (August 31, 2009)
You have to use special detergent for washing! (i.e., follow instructions on their website). Don't use just any major label detergent that is "free & clear" like we did, or you will experience a build up of ammonia smell in these diapers (or any diapers synthetic diapers/covers). They smell fresh out of the wash, but as soon as they get wet, they stink!! We have had to strip our diapers & now are using a special detergent (no enzymes, no brighteners, no dyes, no softeners, no scent, etc.) just for diapers...we are hoping that this will fix the problem...because they still fit great & don't leak.

Customer Review: Great Diaper! Cute & Comfy Too!
Summary: 5 Stars

My son is 7 months old and I just decided to go to Cloth Diapers. After many reviews, I chose Bum Genius and I'm glad I did. He is 20 lbs and 31 inches long and I have him wearing these diapers on the medium size snaps.

He has been wearing them for two weeks now and I have had 2 leaks. Those were my fault because I didn't have the insert completely flat inside the diaper. He has never leaked out of the top and his dirty diapers are very well contained. I notice on hot and humid days, he gets little heat bumps on his lower tummy. I use Baby Powder on these days and it takes care of the problem.

The diapers stay on him well, they are easy to assemble, easy to disassemble to wash and well made. The velcro closures are very snug and I haven't attracted any lint to them yet but I am very careful when washing them to attach all velcro first. I wish they made these in bigger sizes because I have a few older children with bed wetting issues and these would be great!

I have had some staining from Johnson's Diaper Rash Cream and one was slightly stained from BM. I recommend using liners to make cleaning up dirty diapers much, much easier.

These diapers are bulkier than disposables and some of his clothes fit snugger now so keep this in mind when ordering. They are mainly just bulkier in the front and crotch.

Overall, these are great Cloth Diapers and I have already recommended them to friends.

Customer Review: BEST for those new to cloth!
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros:
Super-easy for those new to cloth
Their suedecloth is softer than typical fleece lining material
Velcro system doesn't make the diaper more bulky like HH and MommyTouch.
Very trim for a OS diaper.

Cons of BUMGENIUS pockets:
Velcro tabs are "exposed", meaning you see the velcro tab from the outside of the diaper so you see the wear/tear over time.
The color selection helps their "branding" of the diaper, but is so boring...I'd like some variety if I'm using these for 2+ years, day in - day out!!
They're "finicky"-- they claim to be the easiest diaper, but they're subject to a bunch of "conditions" like:
In order for them not to fade, you can't line dry, but have to sun them flat.
In order to get the fit they claim, you have to adjust them with the snaps every so often (like HH) but MT you just fold the extra fabric down!

Cons of Pocket-style dipes IN GENERAL: 1) You have to reach into the dipe and remove those inserts for washing or shake the inserts into the diaper pail (yuck) and you have to and match up inserts (IF you use multiple brands of diapers/inserts) So overall, I prefer the Mommy's Touch "Easy Clean" Pockets, but they're more expensive so I use bGs. 2) In order to get the "life" out of the diaper that some people claim, you can't put them in the dryer (true with all PUL fabrics). BTW: I use ALL 3X Free & Clear and it works GREAT for them in my front loader.

Customer Review: Best diaper ever!
Summary: 5 Stars

The best cloth diapers i've tried so far are the bum genius one size pocket diapers. They retail for $17.95 a diaper on amazon. com (although i bought mine when they had them on sale for $12.00 each) They are the best diapers I swear. They don't leak (unless you leave them on too long and they over-fill) and they keep baby's bum nice and dry. It's amazing. They're also super easy to wash. You just wash them with a free and clear detergent and some baking soda... oxy-clean is also supposed to be great on those. But try not to use diaper rash cream on them because it won't wash off easily... it just stays on there like a stain. And always, always use the laundry tabs unless you want a whole wad of diapers when you take them out of the wash. lol. They're velcro, so you have to be careful with that. The other cool thing about these diapers is that they are adjustable so that they can grow with your baby. I think it's just awesome. One other great feature is the stretch fabric on the velcro fasteners. It makes the bum genius diaper similar to disposables in ease of use. These diapers also dry well and quickly in a regular dryer. I take these diapers out of the dryer and they're completely dry, not even damp. Of course you want to make sure to pull the insert out of them to wash, that way they'll dry faster. I'd recommend these diapers to any friend considering cloth diapering. They are the easiest to use. I almost look forward to washing them!
