Baby Products Reviews of bumGenius 3.0 One-Size Cloth Diaper

Customer Review: Best diaper on the market
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, i'd like to say that cloth diapers are a personal choice. Everyone finds things that work best for them - this is what worked for my husband and i, so feel free to do things different as it would best serve your needs, time and goals. I'm placing this review of the diapers we purchased to help answer some of the questions we had and more we encountered as we were taking care of our baby. So, the following is our personal opinion and is meant only to provide people with more info. Again, this is what worked for us, feel free to follow or not follow our advice, since what worked for us may not work for everyone.

My daughter had a sensitive bum when she was a baby. We had started with regular Pampers and Huggies for the first few months of her birth, but she kept breaking out really bad. The docs had given up at the end as they kept giving us one medication after another, and finally advised me to either a) leave her bum bare naked - obviously not an option, or b) switch to cloth diapers. This is when we made the final decision to switch. She started with the clothe ones at 3 months old and used them exclusively (even trips and childcare) until she potty trained (around 2 1/2). We'll be using the same diapers with our new baby girl starting this month.

We purchased our bumGenius 3.0 One Size Diapers from cotton babies. We researched a lot before we did make our purchase and we found these to be the best, plus they were one size from birth to whenever (the way they do it, is using a different smaller insert when the baby is small and there are buttons on the diaper to make the diaper also smaller; then, when the baby grows more, the buttons get opened and the bigger insert is used). I'd suggest, if you want to try them, order only a few - say 3 - and try them out. See if you can handle the dudu and if it's not too much of a hassle for you. Then if you decide it's ok, order enough to get 24. That's how many we had for the last 3 years. Upon arrival, make sure you inspect the inserts for stitches gaps and ensure that they are ok. If there is a hole somewhere, call up the website and they'll send you more for free at no time. Also, once you give birth, you are going to be too overwhelmed to be dealing with washing diapers, so i'd suggest wait until the 3rd month. That way, there'll be more time for your baby and you to get to know each other and get more comfortable with ea other, plus, hopefully, you'll start figuring out when you can get more sleep in, more rest, when to grab a bite to eat, dealing with all the breastfeeding challenges, etc. Time is too precious and scarce in the first few months, so wait up till the 3rd month. Honestly, when my first baby was born, i wasn't sure how people survive the first year. Try to sleep when the baby sleeps, don't skip meals for yourself, and just take care of yourself as best as you can.

Some people have complained about THE VELCRO wearing out... While it's true that it's really cheap to replace it, and the website's costumer support might even send you a free replacement kit if your's wears out, i think the trick is the way you wash them. Mine have not worn out and we've used them non stop for 2 1/2 years. They look none worse for the wear and should do great on my new baby. One trick is to secure the flaps to the diaper itself before you wash them and that way they shouldn't be wearing out so much by you just trying to pull them away from the rest of your laundry after they've gotten stuck to everything else. Another, and a more surer way to ensure that the velcro doesn't wear out, is to only dry the inserts in the dryer and not the actual diaper (hanging the diaper on the line). But that's not possible everywhere (mine have always went in the dryer on low), so it's up to you. In addition, watch out for lint getting stuck on the Velcro after they come out of the dryer and remove the lint promptly or the Velcro won't stick. In addition, sometimes, there'll be some lint on the inside of the diaper - in the corners. Please, remove that also from time to time. Also, if you do use a dryer, only dry them on the delicates setting for heat, not regular heat, but LOW heat.

Other people are concerned whether they are bulky... Personally, i enjoyed the BULKINESS and it wasn't a bother for me. It made me feel like she had an extra cushion to fall on (and i let her explore a lot, so she did fall on her booty constantly). Her clothes still fit her. However, i never got to use any of those panties that come with the baby dresses because my diapers (which i had in pretty colors) eliminated the need and looked like they were part of the outfits. If you have a boy, try to put him in a t-shirt and a diaper and you'll see how cute it looks. Also, the extra bulkiness kept her booty warmer in the winter and since they are made from a material that was absorbent, they did not make her too hot in the summer. For a boy, he would probably look cute in the pale green or the blue, or whatever color you like, they have quite a few. I also had a bunch of white ones and people just thought they were her underwear.

Another concern is ABSORBENCY ... We found them to be just as, if not more absorbent than the leading diapers. Ava used to pipi a lot during the night, and i didn't wake her up to change her during the night, so in the morning, she was usually a wet. However, the same happened before when we used the Pampers, so i'm not sure what people expect as far as night wetting. Unless you're going to wake up your baby to change her at night or unless she doesn't pipi much at night, her booty will be wet in the morning. Same goes for the paper diapers. My daughter drank a lot of water, so she would pipi a lot, so i had to pay attention to her and change her soon after she went pipi. But as far as during the night, it's normal for your child to be wet in the morning. And if she/he peed very much, the diaper and the sheets will be wet. It might be easier instead of getting mad, to just accept it, expect it and get used to it. Purchase 4 sets of sheets so you can change them daily and do laundry every 3 days. What i'd like to point out, however, is that when my baby stays wet in a paper diaper, her butt gets a rash and then other problems. But when she has stayed wet in these clothe diapers, she would be fine, so to me, that was a big difference. Of course, when it comes to poop, diapers (no matter whether they are paper or clothe) should get changed right away or the poop would cause a reaction to the baby's bottom - and again, that would not be the diaper's fault but just the natural reaction of the skin when is sits in poop :). Also, some people have mentioned using two inserts at a time, i've never done that and i've never felt the need. But if it helps and is not cumbersome, i suppose that would be ok for night. Lastly on the point of absorbency, the insert has to lie flat and be in it's proper place to work. Else, there will be nothing to absorb the pipi and it would just leak out.

TO TAKE CARE OF THE DIAPERS...

A PIPI DIAPER can just get tossed into the diaper pail and wait until laundry day.
During laundry day, the insert needs to get removed and the sticky velcro side flaps need to get attached to the two velcro things on the inside of the diaper while still leaving the diaper open flat. That way the velcro from one diaper won't get stuck to everything else and would save you time in the folding process, and also save some wear on the diaper. If the pipi insert is too heavy (soaked with pipi), it would be nice if you could quickly run it under water and squeeze it until the water runs clear. That way, you won't have that much pipi soaking the other diapers while they wash but i didn't always do this, and it would fine if you skip this step (again, this is during laundry time, not after you change your baby; when you change him, you could just toss it as is in the pail and wait till laundry time). Some people run the washer twice for cloth diapers, however, i find that by doing what i just told you for the really heavy pipi diapers, one cycle gets them all clean. As far as detergent, we use the no perfume or dye ones (All Free, Tide Free, or Arm & Hammer Free at $3.99 - most often used for us). If you do use one of those, keep in mind that they do not have any perfume, so if you expect your diapers to smell "fresh", "like a mountain", "spring" or whatever, you would have to add something. I've never actually added anything like that when i do baby's laundry, so that's a personal choice. I have, however, sprayed 'shout' or 'spray and wash' on the pupu spots, upon occasion. Adding a fabric softener to the wash is not recommended and it may damage them. The diapers have stayed just as soft and comfy after all this time even without fabric softener. But if you have to add something, add a sheet or two of fabric softener to the dryer. Not the washer. During laundry time, i washed with hot water. But dried on delicate cycle/ low heat.

If you have a DUDU DIAPER WHEN YOU'RE AT HOME, neatly remove it from your baby's bottom and lay it flat on the floor. Wipe your baby with baby wipes and place the dirty baby wipes on top of the dirty diaper. After you put on a new diaper and your baby can go on about it's business, pick up the dirty diaper, toss the used baby wipes in the trash and gently shake the dodo as much as you can in the toilet. Then carefully (as to not get more dodo inside the actual diaper) take the insert out of the diaper and lay it on the side of the sink. In the meantime, rinse the diaper under running water; I have a bar of soap on the sink i use only for the dodo diapers - try to quickly wash the diaper a little bit either with a bar of soap or just rubbing it together. The trick to this, is not breathing in on top of the sink. Breathe out on top of the sink. When you need to take a breath, turn your head to the side and breathe in (you could try breathing trough your mouth if you'd like), so you don't take in all that dodo smell in your nose and make you feel yucky. After that, you could toss both the insert and the diaper in the diaper pail until laundry day. At laundry time, just check to make sure all inserts are out of the diapers and all sticky velcro side flaps are attached to it's own diaper on the inside. Again, the velcro would be a hassle if you don't stick the flaps to the same diaper before washing time. Also, check that all diapers are flat when going into the washer and not folded or into a ball. If so, just flatten them as you throw them in the wash.

If you have A DUDU DIAPER WHEN YOU'RE OUT (like at the store), if you have a chance, gently shake off the dodo in the toilet, if not, don't worry about it until you get home. The important thing would be to fold it so it doesn't get anything else or more of itself dirty. Lay it flat with the dodo facing you, lay the sticky flaps flat also, fold it in half laying the bottom on top of the top - dirty touching dirty, inside to inside, also folding in slightly the top two ends so they're not in the way of the sticky flaps; then gently start rolling from the bottom up into a nice roll, secure by attaching the two sticky flaps around the roll to each other, so your roll of dirty diaper stays rolled in itself, won't dirty the outside of the diaper and won't dirty anything else. Lastly, place the roll inside a plastic bag, secure the bag and voala. When you get home, you could take care of it as outlined above. I use the doggie bags because i learned to roll the diaper pretty small. My mom buys them for me at the dollar store and sends them to me. They're pink or blue and smell really nice. Oh, and they are really cheap (did i mention they are from the dollar store? :).

AFTER THEY COME OUT OF THE DRYER OR THE LINE... Gently unstick the velcro flaps if they have attached themselves to something else during the wash. Do not pull from afar, but do this gently as to not damage the Velcro. Place the diaper on it's face, colored part on the floor, flaps towards you, snaps away from you. Lay flat. Insert the insert with one hand while helping it glide up all the way to the top with your other hand. Ensure it's all the way to the top end and use the hand that is on the outside of the diaper to hold it down right there on top so it doesn't move. Then remove your hand from the inside and use it as an iron to flatten the insert and stretch the diaper all the way by, again, keeping one hand on holding it down on top and using the second hand to flatten and stretch to the other end, to the end where it came in. Then you may fold the top (as you would a regular paper diaper) and attach the flaps to the front. When diapering your child, ensure that the insert is flat and in it's place. If it's not, then your child's booty will have no soaker pad. So, just take the time to double check on this as you diaper him on.

FOR CHILDCARE WORKERS... they are not expected and should not really be asked to do anything but fold it correctly/ roll it so it doesn't dirty anything else and place it in a plastic bag you provide or a diaper pail which you also would have to provide for them.

The plastic bags we use are the regular plastic diaper bags or, as mentioned earlier, doggy bags (same size). They are scented and cost about $1 for 100. For the childcare workers, i give them regular grocery plastic bags because for some reason, i can't get them to take the time to fold/roll the diaper, so these are bigger and they work better for them. Another thing you could ask them, if they won't roll or fold the diaper, and this is kind of important, is instead of tying the two plastic bag handles one with the other, to put the two side by side and then tie them like you tie the end of a balloon. That would somewhat prevent the smell from coming out.

If you're not providing the childcare place with another diaper pail, or if they say they have no room to store another diaper pail, you have to buy a cloth diaper bag to store all the dirty diapers. That's what we use for childcare and it's also great for traveling. We used to keep it in the car usually and fill it during the duration of our trips. It stores all the dirty diapers inside and zips up closed. Of course the diapers should be placed in individual plastic bags before they go into the dirty diaper cloth bag, so they don't get the inside dirty and so they don't get each other dirty. If they do get the diaper bag dirty, it is washable, so it's no biggie. I just preferred to place the dirty ones inside the baggies before throwing them in there and keep it somewhat neater.

The cloth diaper wet bag we purchased from [...]. There are also other places you could purchase them. We bought: Leslie's Boutique Yoga Monkeys wet bag - size Medium at $16.99 at the time. We've also travelled a lot with it and it works great (even international travel) - it just snaps to the diaper bag. Of course, we always roll the diapers and place them in an individual plastic bag before putting them in the cloth diaper sack. That way, we can fit a bunch, plus it's all neat inside.

The diaper pail and the cloth wet diaper bag should get regularly SANITIZED. A solution that was suggested to me from the childcare place is 1 tbs bleach to 1 qt water. In addition to sanitizing, you should throw the cloth diaper bag into the wash from time to time (turning it upside down) and that would keep it clean too. And also, be sure that you're placing the dirty diapers in individual plastic bags before tossing them in the wet bag. That would help both with keeping the bag clean and keeping the odor inside.

As far as the CHILDCARE PLACE...
Not all childcare places will accept clothe diapers, so i had to jump through some hoops to get them authorized where i lived. What we did was 1) got a note from the doc that said that my baby gets a rash when wearing paper diapers and her mom has decided for her to wear cloth diapers for that reason and 2) got an "exception to policy" letter from the community health nurse that states we're exempt from having our child wear paper diapers and have been given permission to have her wear clothe for health reasons. The letter also states that we need to provide a separate bag for the dirty diapers and we need to sanitize it regularly. At the time, they didn't have that kind of thing where we lived, so the community nurse made the form/letter for us and had is signed. The childcare place kept a copy and we kept one for our records. Also, be sure to show them the diaper any time you're talking with the childcare place because most people when they hear "clothe diapers", what comes to mind is the old fashioned foldable fabric ones that are too complicated for their staff to do or learn. So, if you always show them what they look like when you're asking permission, and when you're dropping off your child, they'll realize that they look exactly like a paper diaper except you don't throw them away, and it will save you a lot of hassle. Of course, you should already have the diapers assembled for the childcare place and not expect them to insert the inserts themselves. When your child is in childcare, you need to bring plastic bags (regular shopping bags) for the ladies there to throw the dirty diaper in, tie it, and then toss it in the dirty cloth diaper wet disposal bag that you have provided. That's all they'll do. They won't wash or rinse or scrape the dudu or anything like that. They'll just throw the diaper in there.

I have not had any problems with the elastic... My guess, ensure that you're not damaging it by drying it on too hot of a setting. The out layers of the diapers should be either line dried or dried on low/delicate setting in the dryer. And if you're adding other stuff to the wash (like fabric softener or baking soda), you may be damaging them as well.

So, that's all i can think of right now. You may use this as a reference when you have a question that was answered in there. Hopefully it answered most questions. Also, i suppose it's kind of hard to understand what i'm saying without actually seeing the diaper, but hopefully, as you diaper on, it will start making more sense.

TO ALL MOMS, TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOURSELVES AND DO WHAT WOULD WORK BEST IN YOUR SITUATION. DIAPER ON. GOD BLESS.
