Baby Products Reviews of Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether

Customer Review: Sophie Rocks! Perfect for Early Teethers
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first bought this toy, I was a little skeptical despite the excellent reviews. It really does look like a rubber dog sqeaky toy. The first big difference between Sophie and a rubber dog squeaky toy though is Sophie is be made of very safe and non-toxic materials. Also, Sophie's rubber is quite a bit thicker than a typical squeaky toy (good for teething). She also has a soft--almost velvety--texture and smells very nice.

When my daughter began teething early. She cut her first tooth at 3 months. This is when we discovered the awesomeness of Sophie. Sophie is a fantastic teether--especially for very young babies. Because she is hollow, she is very light weight and her skinny legs and neck make her easy to grasp. She also has many appendages to chew on (horns, ears, nose, legs and neck). Because my daughter was so young when she began teething, she had difficulty grasping other teething toys. They'd always be too thick or heavy for her newly developing grip. Sophie, however, has been an excellent source of relief (for our daughter and us :) ).

We really love this toy! From here on out, I think I'll always get one for a baby shower gift.

Customer Review: Best Baby Toy
Summary: 4 Stars

I was a skeptic at first but since he turned about 5 months, Sophie has been my son's favorite teething toy and we seldom leave the house without it. Easy to clean, but it does pick up dirt fairly easily. People have asked me if I bought a dog toy for him since it is rubbery and squeeks. He loves chewing on the ears and legs. Food grade paint so even though it shows some wear, I don't have to worry about him ingesting the chemicals. Overall, we are thrilled with this product.

I wanted to address one concern. I previously read reviews about a choking hazard and was hesitant to buy based on that. My baby is always supervised with chew toys and after observing him, I'm guessing some people are mistaking gagging for choking. Babies naturally have a sensitive gag reflex, this is what keeps them from choking and makes those first meal times so much fun :) Once or twice he has gagged when he got extra eager with his chomping but the legs arent even close to going into his throat.

The cost is ridiculous for a rubber chew toy, minus 1 star, but hopefully the prices will start to come down as more parents demand safer toys for their babies.

Customer Review: My Zoe loves her Sophie, and sometimes not!
Summary: 4 Stars

Though billed as a teether, and yes it does do that well, I have found, maybe because my seven month old is a little smaller then average, this includes her mouth area and that fact that she has a very small tongue as well, that she actually enjoys hugging it and talking to it more then anything. Much like her Plush Einstein Octupus, she finds it entertaining, but at times, she also finds him frustrating because she cannot quite get her mouth around it the way she wants to.

She is relegated to biting the ears, and his behind! When she tries to bite the legs, it makes her gag, and in frustration, she will throw him down or off to the side, making my poor Fiance go up and down to pick it up. She enjoys when it sqeeks, and Sophie is very soft and pliable, which is nice. Between this and the octopus, her baby cousins find themselves wanting to play with her toys more then their own, which says something!

So while I don't thihk that this exactly works as the world's perfect teether for my baby girl, it is a very nice product and she does enjoy squealing at it, which is always a good sign.

Four stars for Sophie!!

Customer Review: Not what I expected, but he does love it....
Summary: 4 Stars

For some reason I was expecting Sophie to be a hard-chew type toy. Not a soft squishy squeak toy. At first appearance, she really reminds me of a puppy toy. However, my son (5 1/2 months old when he got her, now 6 months) LOVES her. We take Sophie everywhere we go. He even sleeps with her at nap time.

I'm a little disappointed that you cannot sterilize her. She's a teething toy & I need her to be clean. The rubber material picks up every spec and scrap of dust when she gets dropped, so she has to be wiped down a LOT.

I'd also like to see a toy-loop so she can have a "leash" attached. I improvised & bought an eye-glasses cord & use the little rubber end to hook onto her leg, the other end has a slip knot & I can attach it to the car seat handle/high chair, etc. the only problem is it would be a choking hazard if left unattended. (We do NOT leave the "leash" on if we are not paying close attention.)

I'm glad the paints are food safe because in just two weeks, my Sophie's ears are free of paint, my son loves to suck & chew on her ears. The paint on the rest of her is fine, but her ear paint is gone.

Customer Review: This giraffe is a personal taste....
Summary: 4 Stars

This giraffe was a bit disappointing straight out of the box.I had no idea it squeaked; it does come across as a dog toy. Our dog did run over and still eyes the toy across the room waiting to make her move...

That being said, our daughter didn't have a lot of interest in this toy until she began teething. I thought the squeaking would be annoying, but really she never squeaks it. The legs are perfect size for her hands to grab. Its light weight enough for her to pass, hold, and control.

It is definitely a supervision only toy. In our case, our daughter likes us to hold it for her (even though she can grasp it well). This gives her more concentration on gnawing ;). (I can see how the limbs could go far into the mouth...which probably feels great when getting those back teeth. I could see how they may go back too far however, and would urge people to read the other reviews.)

That being said, our girl loves to stare and grab this giraffe. The colors are great. As for the rubbery smell other people have mentioned....it IS rubber. Rubber has a distinct smell and if you don't like it, then you shouldn't buy rubber.
