Baby Products Reviews of Vulli Sophie the Giraffe Teether

Customer Review: GREAT teether!
Summary: 5 Stars

We hesitated buying this because it looked and sounded more like a dog toy than a teether and was expensive compared to other available teething toys, but am so thankful that we did! Sophie has been well worth the money and we appreciate this teether so much that it will become a standard gift for all the new mothers for whom we purchase gifts. Why?
-The texture is perfect for massaging the sore gums that are producing teeth.
-It has multiple areas on which to chew: four separate legs, two ears and a nose.
-The neck is the perfect size to allow infants to grasp the giraffe steadily and to manipulate it in the mouth easily.
-The squeaker is harsh, and not necessary for the purpose of the teether, but might offer some "cause and effect" benefit.
-It is not gender specific.
-It wipes off easily (except newspaper print).
-It is the perfect size to throw in the diaper bag or purse.

Because Sophie has become an invaluable asset, we have found a way to attach a "link-a-doos" between the front legs and over the body so Sophie can be connected to the car seat, stroller or diaper bag. We definitely don't want her to get lost on trips or errands.

Customer Review: Overpriced, There are cheaper and more interesting teething toys
Summary: 2 Stars

Okay, so I bought the first Sophie Giraffe because of all the great reviews. My daughter at 6 months gummed it a few times and then threw it aside and went for other toys to gum at. I kept taking this out with us on car rides hoping that she'll gain some interest in this squeeky Giraffe but she keeps tossing over the side and have no interest in the toy. We then lost Sophie and so I purchased another one when she was 8 months to place in her Christmas stocking thinking "she has to love this toy because of all the great reviews and adorable pictures on amazon." Well, she still has no interest in it. Instead, my little Shi Zhu dog is in love with this toy and I have to hide it from him all the time. Really, people, this is like an over glorified dog toy. But I guess you have the peace of mind thinking that the material/paint is safer on Sophie. I would hope the toys for my dog are non-toxic and safe too. After all, he's part of our family too. I give this 2 stars because from my personal experience, she has no interest in this toy. NONE. Maybe when she's older and her molers are coming in, Sophie will prove more useful with her long legs. I will update this post if this is the case.

Customer Review: Don't let the price deter you!
Summary: 5 Stars

My 5 month old daughter LOVES her Sophie the Giraffe toy! This toy is absolutely wonderful in every way. Sophie is made of soft rubber and makes a pleasant-sounding squeak whenever any part of her body is squeezed, so even a young baby can elicit a reaction from the toy with minimal effort.

I don't know what it is about Sophie, but whenever my daughter plays with her, she gets very vocal and talkative.

I saw another review which referred to this toy as "a glorified dog toy". That reviewer is mistaken, and simply doesn't realize the value of this toy.

- Sophie's body, while soft, has several areas of thicker rubber (the nubs on her head, her ears, and her feet) which are perfect for teething babies to gnaw on for relief.
- Sophie's contrasting colors (spots) are visually stimulating to a baby.
- She is easy to grip given her long, thin neck.
- This toy is made of 100% natural rubber and uses food-grade paint (SAFE!).
- This is a quality baby toy which will last for many years.

I would much rather pay $20 for a safe, engaging toy for my baby, than pay $5 for some piece of junk with lead paint.

Customer Review: Worth its weight in gold
Summary: 5 Stars

We love Sophie so much that we actually purchased some other teethers/toys from the same company and I plan to purchase more as gifts. I really wish I had known about Sophie (and similar products) with my other child. This toy is definitely a bit more money, but I find that we take much better care of it and also pay more attention to her whereabouts so as to not lose her. My toddler always asks if we have Sophie for his brother prior to leaving the house; it's like she's part of the family My 8 month old has had Sophie for about 3 months now (his first teeth cut through at 4 months); he loves it and it's easy for him to hold. He gets very excited about the squeaky noise he can create himself. For me, it's great piece of mind knowing that it's BPA and PVC-free. I also like that does not come from Asia, where standards of safety are more suspect. I'm so tired of teething rings with painted crap on them that I know is going into my child's system. Some other reviewers have negatively commented on the toy's appearance. If you are purchasing this because it is BPA and PVC-free, I find it odd that aesthetics would be so fundamentally important in the 'teething toy category'.

Customer Review: Allergy and choking hazard
Summary: 1 Stars

After reading the star-studded reviews, I decided to purchase Sophie for my infant teething son. Upon its arrival, I washed it thoroughly with soap and hot water but it left a strong natural rubber smell on my hands, which I don't particularly care for. My then 3.5-month old son played with it for about 10 minutes but I had to take it away after he started gagging on the front legs. Also, it wasn't until after 1 hour later that I also noticed that the palm of his hands as well as the area around his mouth was bright red, indicating a possible allergy to Sophie. We weren't too sure if he was allergic to Sophie until we gave it to him again at 6 months old, when he again developed the same allergic reaction in the hands and face. Moreover, he choked and gagged on this toy again. I was so disappointed that I wasn't fully aware of the allergy and choking potential of this product. To be fair, we didn't know our son was allergic to natural rubber until he was given this toy. Despite the rave reviews and considering how expensive this teether is, I hope this review serves to make parents more aware of potential dangers of this product and to purchase a better option.
