Baby Products Reviews of Vulli Sophie the Giraffe TeetherCustomer Review: Sophie the endearing rubber friend Summary: 5 Stars
My four month old baby loves this giraffe! I tried other teethers that were more standard, and he couldn't stand them. Ring teethers were too huge in all areas to get into his mouth at all, and the plastic was too hard and brittle and seemed to cause him pain.
This Sophie teether is completely different. Some reviewers compared it to a dog toy, and I guess in some ways it's similar, but the rubber is a much finer grade and so much softer than any dog toy I've ever witnessed. It has a pleasant scent and taste as well. It's easy for my son to hold on to and he seems to like looking at it and "coos" to it.
Another reviewer called it a gagging hazard. It's no more a gagging hazard than your child's own fingers. As with any toy, your children should be supervised at play, but I think it's impossible for your child to choke on the Sophie teether. It's large and durable. My son has been using his Sophie for weeks without incident. They've been making Sophie giraffes for generations, the brand has stood the test of time.
Beautifully painted with natural food paint, this toy evokes a feeling of nostalgia, it will make for an adorable keepsake long after your baby outgrows it. Worth the cost; throw away a few bucks on something your child will not use, or spend just a few dollars more for this cherishable giraffe. I intend to purchase more items from Vulli. My baby's gums are soothed and his smile is super happy!
Customer Review: not every baby falls for the hype, and neither should you Summary: 1 Stars
It's a $20 super cute real rubber teething toy that my son has picked up a total of two times in exactly 10 months to gnaw on for approximately 10 seconds before throwing it down with an air of ambivalence any true French man would envy. He could care less about this toy, and no matter how many times I've handed it to him with baited breath and an expectant smile, he's never given it a moments notice. Now, the drum stick that came with his first drum set? He can't keep it out of his mouth. He waves it around his face in pure fascination. He zooms across the floor to pound out a rhythm on any over turned object with that stick, and I think it might have cost about $2, all things considered in the set. Just because another baby loved Sophie, heck, just because another 500 babies loved Sophie does NOT mean your child will. It just means they might. So if you're hesitant to spend $20 on a rubber teether, you might want to hesitate a little more and not buy it at all. Not because it's a choking hazard (lighten up, ladies - babies choke on their own FINGERS, for pete's sake. going to take those away now, are you?), but because it may well be a convoluted waste of money. Babies like to suck on their fingers, older kids like to tear paper and wave around empty two liter bottles and play peek a boo with mommy's blouse. Some homemade fun is all that most kids require and anything else is just icing.
Customer Review: Lifesaving Summary: 5 Stars
My husband and I dubbed our little one "organic girl". She won't take a bottle, and she's refused five different brands of pacifiers. She's also started to teethe early. We got those jelly-like teething rings to see if she would at least take to them. No way. I've been her teether and pacifier for months now, when she isn't sticking her whole fist in her mouth.
Finally, upon my complaining that I felt chewed upon a little too much (baby also raised a stink about my wearing breast shields while nursing her, she'd wail her head off until the shields were removed), a friend suggested I give Sophie a try. I had given it some thought, but I doubted it would make a difference. It'd probably be another useless gadget, I thought.
However, having had Sophie for half a week, I can say that it works. My daughter is happily chewing on her as I write, rather than on me or her fingers. When she drops it and we take it away to wash off, she keeps looking for her, and smiles when Sophie comes back. As a result of being able to massage her gum and try out her bite on Sophie, she has stopped being rough on me when I nurse her.
I'm not sure which one of us is happier about having Sophie in our home. I would certainly say that if you've tried everything else for your fussy teething baby, you should give Sophie a try. I'm glad we did.
Customer Review: Loved it immediately! Summary: 5 Stars
I held off on getting this teether thinking someone would get it for me as a gift. When I didn't receive it as a gift, I finally broke down and bought it, despite what I thought was a high price. The second I took Sophie out of the package, my daughter fell in love with her. Sophie is soft and apparently very comforting to chew on. My daughter loves her. She chews on her head and her feet and it really seems to help while she's teething. I wish I hadn't waited 7 months to buy Sophie.
The only drawback (and this is no fault of the toy/teether itself) is that my dogs are obsessed with it because it is so similar to their dog toys. They wait for my daughter to put it down and then try to grab it. I have to keep it out of their reach whenever my daughter isn't actively using it. (Trying to teach them not to touch it hasn't worked yet.) In response to the person who said it is a dog toy - it is NOT. Yes, it sounds a bit like one and is the texture of one, but it is SAFE for babies to chew. It is natural rubber and it is made with food-grade paint - unlike all of the dog toys that I have (and have seen). It was designed specifically for a baby - it is the perfect shape to hold and gnaw on.
I am certain if you have a teething baby, you will love this toy! Just be sure to keep it away from your dogs!
Customer Review: So that's what's so great about it! Summary: 4 Stars
I saw Sophie the giraffe when I went to check out baby things and set up my baby registry. my mother and I spent the next four months of my pregnancy making fun of the expensive French giraffe. What could be so great about it that it cost $20+. Well, my mother, now a grandmother broke down and bought Sophie for my daughter when she began showing the early signs of teething at 3.5 months old. My mother remembered my brother and I having a giraffe teething toy and figured her grand daughter was worth it. My daughter loves Sophie. The way the legs are arranged makes it easy for her to hold. She enjoys chewing on the ears, nose, and various legs. I have piece of mind knowing that the rubber it is made from and paint used on it are safe. As for other reviews of it being a choking hazard, my daughter puts the feet in her mouth but has never tried to get a leg that far into her mouth that it would be a problem. When we first gave it to her we made sure we were right there next to her for the first week or so when she played with it. As we do with most other new toys that go in her mouth, we make sure that we are within earshot while she is playing with it. Thankfully we have not had any negative experience. I can say for the enjoyment my daughter gets out of it and the quality of the product it is worth the price. Guess the joke is on me!
