Customer Review: Baby has love/hate relationship with mobile

When we put together our nursery we bought a very charming little mobile with a wind-up mechanism. The baby loved it, but she began to start screaming when the music stopped after about a minute. I found myself constantly winding the thing in order to keep her quiet, which seemed to defeat the purpose of the mobile. These Symphony-in-Motion mobiles seem to be some of the only battery-operated mobiles out there. Compared to our other little mobile, it is huge and garish. It is also kind of sinister looking because the way it moves and the black-and-white spirals on it give it the appearance of a 1950's brainwashing tool. I don't know if that description makes sense, but if you saw it you would understand.
When the baby is in a good mood she can be transfixed by the mobile for about 5 or 6 minutes. Then she starts screaming. If she is in a bad mood she whimpers and won't even look at it. When I put her to sleep I try to keep the mobile as far from her line of vision as possible, because it is too stimulating and will keep her up. This isn't easy, because it's enormous.
Although I don't like how it looks I'm holding on to it because I have a feeling that the mobile will ultimately be capable of yielding 10-15 minutes of baby bliss. At only 2 months, it's understandable that the baby would be a little freaked out by it.

We recieved this mobile as a gift for our first child, in 2005. At first I thought it was ridiculously expensive (we live in Canada and it was almost $100 in stores at that time.) But this was the first thing to entertain my son, and it would buy us 15 precious minutes of peace when he was just a few weeks old. The mobile never put him to sleep, but at first we thought he was sleeping because he was so quiet. Then it would end and he'll call "hey!" to get us to turn it back on.
When he got old enough to grab the mobile, we took that part off and left the music box. I'd always turn it on when I put him down for a nap and at a very young age (can't remember now but only a few months old) he started turnign it on himself, in the middle of the night! He's now 2 1/2 and we're expecting #2 any day. I thought I had convinced him we should put this in the baby's crib, we did it together, but an hour after bedtime he called us asking for his music box back. So I'm online looking for a second one. My sister also just bought a second one for their baby because it's an integral part of her 23 month old's sleep routine.
As far as I'm concerned this mobile is worth it's weight in gold! I just hope I don't find the quality is lower on the new one like one reviewer mentionned.

We bought this mobile when our daughter was 2 months old and have love Love LOVED it. It was easy to put together, took a little work to attach to the bassinet/playpen we have (made for a crib), and entertained her immensely. We used it from when she was 2 months old to about a week ago (5 1/2 months old), when she could actually reach up and grab ahold of the little animals as they went by!
It's true what some of the other reviewers say, that this mobile is fairly loud even when it's on the quieter setting. It also does not have an option of having the mobile going without the music (music has to be on). However, our daughter loved watching it; I could get about 15 minutes worth of stuff done while she watched it before she lost interest. One push of the random button keeps the mobile on for about 10 minutes.
Incidentally, I paid about $30 for this on clearance at a baby store. I can't imagine paying the $150 that Amazon currently has it listed for!
Love this product and would definitely recommend it to family and friends. I'm just sad we have to put it away now because she's gotten too old for it! Giving it four stars because of the loudness factor and the no-mobile-without-music non-option.

My sis recommended this to me when she got it for her gal. Boy! Am i glad to have gotten this when i gave birth to my boy too! This mobile is a real life saver and spares me 10~ 15 mins of free time for meals or toilet breaks. My boy was not really into it when he was just born, but when we tried attaching it again when he was 3 weeks, he was transfixed from there. It's his favourite toy in the morning and evening times. He would just lie on his back and coo and his eyes will follow the spinning discs and animals. Very good for developing eye tracking movements . Morever, the toys have very cute features and I believe my boy likes the face features of the animals. Once, the portable fan i attached to the playpen blew the toys around, and the butts of the animals ended up facing him. He was distressed and started crying. I turned off the fan and when the animals started facing him again, he started looking and cooing at them. Also had great fun as a family where my hubby and I will hold the toys as it spins and use the toys to play-talk to him eg " Mr Zebra is saying Hi to preeeety baby! " , which he really enjoys.
No issues with the volume for me. Would not hesitate to recommend this mobile.

This mobile is great! It is age appropriate, FUNctional and not a clone of all the other "whimsical" mobiles that are out there. This quirky one fit the bill for us. Our baby loves it! After he could reach it, we removed the mobile portion and he still listens to the music. And since the buttons are easy to press, he can turn it on himself! I guess this feature could also be considered a drawback!;)
In my opinion the bright colors would be appropriate for a boy or a girl (the animals do have pink accents but not an overwhelming amount). We were a little concerned that our baby would have a somewhat distorted understanding of animals since the animals look so funky - definitely not the traditional Old Macdonald stuff! But that doesn't seem to be a problem and he was mesmerized by it, so that works for me! The batteries last a long time and the volume control is another nice feature. Also, the classical music has a relatively good sound quality.
This was also very durable, because even with moving the "arm" of the mobile around several times a day and my baby pulling on the animals before we moved it out of his reach, all was still well on the farm!
