Baby Products Reviews of Tiny Love Symphony Light and Motion Mobile in Blue/YellowCustomer Review: The only thing that could keep our baby happy! Summary: 5 Stars
I received this mobile as a gift, and when I first saw it, I must admit, I wasn't sure if I'd even keep it. The colors and style didn't match our nursery, so I thought about returning it for something else. Boy - am I glad I kept it! This mobile is the one baby product we own that I can honestly say ALWAYS makes our baby happy.
In the very early weeks, it was fascinating to see him actually showing so much interest in it (since most very young newborns really don't interact much with toys or other objects). He'd lay in his crib and his eyes would follow the animals circling above him.
Then the "fussy" period began (at around 6 weeks). Every night, for about 3-4 weeks, he'd cry like someone was torturing him for an hour in the evening. If we couldn't calm him, we'd place him in the crib, turn on the mobile, and he'd instantly calm down and watch the animals instead. It was such a relief! Of course, I hated that I couldn't be the one to calm my baby in my own arms, but hey - when you're desperate, you're happy for anything that works!
My son is now 6 months old, and he still loves this mobile. We even lowered his crib mattress just so we could keep using it (once he was close to being able to reach the animals when lying below them - this is not a toy that you can allow baby to grab - it's for eyes only!) I love it because it's a guaranteed way to get at least 10 minutes or so when I can put him down and go take a shower or something and know that he'll be calm and happy.
I also love that it has a built in light. I used it as a light to nurse my baby by early on in the middle of the night, so I didn't have to turn on the full room lights.
The one thing I don't like about it is the volume control. My son doesn't have much interest in the music (just the motion really), so I wish there was either a setting where you could have motion and/or lights without music. Or I wish the volume control would stay set after you turn the mobile off (it defaults back to full volume each time you turn it on), especially since the volume is kind of a pain to adjust (you have to press repeatedly on the control to turn it all the way down). The music is nice and the sound quality is pretty good for a children's toy, but it gets a little tedious listening to the same music over and over, and I wish I could turn it off more easily.
Customer Review: A Winner! Baby loves it! Summary: 5 Stars
This mobile is huge when assembled onto the crib. However, my baby girl absolutely loves it. She'll stare at it for 40+ minutes at times, which kind of defeats the purpose because it does not put her to sleep. But it's 40 minutes of FREE time for me so I'm not complaining. The mobile shuts off automatically after 20 minutes and she'll scream for another round of 20 minutes. The mobile turns counter-clockwise and each animal (monkey, lion and bunny) rotates as it slides down the tube. My baby will follow each animal from left to right as it makes its way across her vision path. She'll then turn her head to the left, ready to follow the next animal that comes down. The mobile also includes three round "soccer" balls and other flat objects (square, circle and star) that rises and falls. I don't think my daughter cares too much for these. She's more into the animals, which are brightly colored. The classical music is pleasant to hear. There is also a volume control. My only complaint is that the volume resets to loud if you turn the mobile off and then on again. If the mobile shuts off on its own and you hit one of the music buttons to turn it back on, then the volume stays at the same level it was before.
PROS:
- Visually stimulating with rotating and rising/falling movement.
- 20 minutes of nonstop music (most mobiles are 15 minutes).
- Bright colors.
- Cute animals.
- Easy to assemble.
- Hooks tightly onto crib.
CONS:
- No remote control.
- Volume resets to loud each time you turn the mobile off and on.
- You need to "pump" the volume control in order to lower the sound. You can't hold the button down. Would have been nice if there was a dial.
- Night light is too dim. With no other lights turned on in the room, baby can hardly see the animals when the night light is on.
- No feature for music only - the 3 modes (movement, lights & movement, light) include music.
Overall, I highly recommend this mobile. This is a must have. It keeps my baby happy and gives me some free time. Additional information on the mobile can be obtained from the tinylove website.
Customer Review: This product may fall on our baby's head Summary: 1 Stars
I'm usually the one who is criticizing other reviewers for giving a product a bad review for silly reasons, by after reading the other reviews for this product, I can't believe that there are so many positive reviews.
1. The main reason to not buy this mobile is that the method by which it clamps to the crib is very weak. It won't take very much for the mobile to topple over and land on your kid's head. This is somewhat dependent on the size and spacing of the spindles that make up your crib. Take a chance if you want. I recommend buying a different product.
2. The music starts off way too loud. See #3 below.
3. Complaint #2 wouldn't matter so much if the unit were to remember the last volume setting that you had used. Instead, the unit's volume setting is reset each time it is turned on, to the loudest level.
4. The illuminated part of the mobile is no where near as colorful as the photos would have you believe.
That said, our kid did like the mobile. It just annoyed and scared me and my wife. I ended up making a spacer block with some roll pins that went into holes that I drilled into the housing to prevent it from falling over. I also added some resistors in series and parallel with the speaker to lower the volume.
Update: Our kid is now over 3 and still uses this mobile. In fact, she loves it. Keep in mind that without modifications that I made to the mobile, it would be falling down all the time and it would always be way too loud. But, after fixing its shortcoming, it's a great product with nice music, funny animals, and soothing movements. It has developed an annoying squeak after 3 years of use, something I'll have to fix.
Customer Review: It appears they've addressed many of the complaints Summary: 5 Stars
After reading reviews for several of the Tiny Love mobiles, I ordered the Symphony, Light & Music mobile. Mainly, I liked the idea that you could actually turn the music volume off completely AND from the picture it appeared to be the only one that might fit on our thicker sided crib. Our daughter loved watching her old mobile, but I got tired of winding it every three minutes and wanted something than ran a bit longer.
While reading about this particular model I read three main complaints:
1) People claimed it was too heavy and tipped over. This does not seem the case now. This mobile mounts very snugly to our crib and has a safety strap that wraps over the edge to hold it firmly in place.
2) Others complained that the volume always resets to loudest when you turn it off manually, but stays the same if it turns itself off. Mine does not do this. It starts at the same volume I had playing the previous time, even when I'm the one who turned it off.
3) Finally, someone said that while it claims to play different types of music, it just plays one loop, but starts in different places. The one I purchased (on 1/31/08) plays a loop if you don't press a specific button when you turn it on. If you choose a music button, it plays just that piece of music and so on.
This mobile is a big hit with both parents and baby at our house.
Customer Review: Good mobile, but some real flaws with the music Summary: 3 Stars
This is a darling mobile with cute, googly-eyed animals that move in a mesmerizing way. When Lola was a little baby, it overstimulated her. (From 4 months she liked it much better and would watch it and even "talk" to it either before sleep or if she woke in the night.) In the early months, though, we took down the mobile and tried to use just the music part that can stay attached to the crib separately. There are two big problems. First, as so many have pointed out, the music starts MUCH TOO LOUD. You always have to adjust it downward. That's really annoying. Second, I bought this with the idea that it had 15 minutes of Bach, and 15 minutes of Beethoven, and 15 minutes of nature sounds, each of which you could select separately on the dial. Instead, there is 15 minutes of music that plays, but that music is comprised of a constantly looping short piece of all 3 types. If you press the nature button, you'll start with the very short classical piece with birdsong over it, but then it'll move through the other short pieces over and over. The music is, therefore, completely the same with each button but begins at a different point. I felt kind of hoodwinked by this because the mobile touts itself as having all this great classical music. It doesn't. If you want classical music for your baby, I guess a nearby CD player or Ipod hookup is your best bet.
