Customer Review: Don't buy it!

My husband bought me this pump as a mother's day present last year, when I was pregnant with our first baby boy. Starting with the pros, I gave it two stars because:
1. It got me through the first 4 months of breastfeeding, and when it did break I got the parts shipped to me overnight.
2. The First Years customer service is great.
However... don't waste your money with this pump: We were at the hospital for a week (our baby was in the NICU), and they had Ameda pumps. As a first time mom, I wasn't sure how efficient a breast pump was supposed to be. After getting home, I started using the miPump, and it worked alright, I knew it wasn't as good as the (what my husband and I called) "industrial hospital breast pumps." After a few days, I started noticing the big difference, and after pumping for a while, it started affecting many things. It was taking forever for me to empty my breasts, sometimes I couldn't even finish pumping. After less than 2 months of use, the suction was just bad, somehow water got into the tubing, and I was VERY careful when cleaning, and let all the pieces dry completely. The issue is that the part that connects to the tubes has quite a bit of plastic inside, so it doesn't dry completely, which in my opinion isn't very hygienic. Not to mention, this is an OPEN system pump, and it is much more hygienic to get a closed system pump (of course, I found all of this out after doing some research). So I called The First Years, and this is one of the reasons I gave this pump 2 stars is that... if you can't afford a better pump, and this is all you can get, they do have great customer service, they shipped me a new motor, new valves, and tubing over night. And that lasted about another month and a half, before it started acting up again.
Not only that, but I went back to work, and this pump was affecting my work as well. It was taking me forever to pump, messing with the valves (because air kept getting through), and suction was terrible. At this point, I decided to bite the bullet and get a new pump. My husband and I did the research and we purchased the Ameda Purely Yours (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003CL8ICQ/ref=oss_product) since we had some experience with it from the hospital, and has great reviews. Life saver!!! I LOVE love love this pump. I mean, it used to take me 20-25 minutes to get 7-8 oz from BOTH breasts with the miPump (and by this time I had to stop, I can't lose my job!), and now it takes me less than 15 minutes to get 8-9 oz with the Ameda!
So if you can... spend more and get yourself a better pump. I've learned going cheap always ends up costing more, and I definitely learned my lesson with this one. Plus the bag the Ameda comes with is so much better, the bottles and everything are just better quality.
