Baby Products Reviews of The First Years Swing Tray - Portable Booster Seat Blue & AquaCustomer Review: Okay but not great Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this seat for my son when he was probably around 6 months old and just starting on solid foods. Ten months later, I hardly ever use the darn thing. It worked okay for us for a little while but it was not one of my better baby purchases. My complaints with the product:
- Not particularly sturdy. The backrest portion in particular seems to pop off way too easily.
- The straps that secure it to the kitchen chair are annoyingly long and in the way. Not such a problem when the seat is secured to the chair because you can just tuck the straps in somewhere. However, everytime I remove the seat from the chair the straps prove to be a real pain in the rear. And unfortunately it seems I need to unstrap and remove the seat after every meal to clean the bits of food that inevitably end up on the big chair to which this seat is secured (another complaint).
- The second tray which pops on over the swing away tray (at least on my particular model) is very easily removed by my son. He lifts it up and dumps his food on the floor. The point of this second tray was to make food prep and cleanup easier but it fails miserably.
- This seat is not at all sturdy or useful as a stand alone seat. It HAS to be strapped to a chair or it will easily tip over.
The good things about this product are that it is relatively inexpensive and is a good spacesaving alternative to a regular highchair which sucks up so much floor space. It is also fairly easy to clean due to the plastic design.
Overall it is not a bad product but not on my list of favorites. If I had it to do over, I would have bought a similar type of chair but probably a different brand.
Customer Review: Gotta have one! Summary: 5 Stars
We eat out more than we eat in! This chair goes with us and we prefer it over restaurant high chairs for cleanliness (yes, that's you job ,mom- clean out the peas when your kid hides them!) ease of use, safety, light weight and comfort! Our daughter is VERY active, strong and tall and loves this seat! She has sat in it 3-4x's a week since she was 5 months and is now almost 1 year. She has her own CLEAN tray- for food or for latched on toys/books... is securely attached to a seat (though can't be used securely in a booth) and is used to her surroundings since she's always in that chair- not some wooden or metal (loud) seat. Also, we use it at the beach and on trips (when we drive, not fly) so she has her place to sit and eat. It washes easily- I forgot it was dishwasher safe until reading the other reviews- and we haven't used it w/o the tray... no need. Most tables would actually fit OVER the tray if you wanted to push the chair in. Glass topped tables are LOUD when a baby hits a toy on it... plastic is much quieter and safer! The straps are secure (I'm a safety nut and this 3 pt strap is just fine. Normally I would say get a 5 pt harnes but this is no problem, unless you don't strap in your child- in that case, YOU need a strap! That doesn't make sense! Do they not strap their child in their car seat either???) I'd buy it again if something happened to it and for a shower gift with the "floppy seat" in an instant! BUY IT!
Customer Review: unsafe but can be altered to make a really great product Summary: 2 Stars
today i returned this item to the store where i bought it. originally we purchased it for our 17 month old so that we would have a chair for visiting family and friends. it worked perfectly until the last few weeks as at 20 months now our daughter has grown up to be 30 lbs. im not sure about any weight restrictions for the chair, but two weeks ago she leaned forward and the strap pulled straight through the plastic part of the chair that is supposed to ground it. just a few days ago she was sitting in the chair eating when out of the blue - the seat let go from level 3 and landed on the cusion of the chair below it. luckily she was not injured however i would reccommend this chair not be used by any child of 30 pounds. infact, i would reccomend a few changes to the safety of this product such as a more dependable method of securing the safety straps to the seat itself in back. another suggestion would be to secure the seat itself to the sides of the chair in a way that was less likely to give way under 30 pounds - even if the child kicks her feet or wiggles. this is a fantastic chair if those two areas were addressed. i loved the style and the portability of it, i love the tray being attached and the fact that it could go in the dishwasher. the only other thing i would reccommend is a portable bag to take it along so that the owner doesnt have to fuss with the straps etc. parents have so much to do already.
Customer Review: A good sized high chair Summary: 5 Stars
I had this high chair for 6 months and needed to get a second one for a nanny share. That was when I realized what a good chair this was for my needs. The pros: it has a little curve in the lower back so it's the only highchair that we can actually tie to our chair. The tray size are BIG compared to some of the other ones out there. It swings, which suits me perfectly. Some people don't like it because their kids can remove it but it hasn't been a problem for us. By the time my kid could take it off, they really didn't need a tray to eat but can sit by the table. The best thing is that it has a second yellow cover. I didn't realize how much I liked this feature till I saw the other high chairs I bought (and returned one by one). Having two covers means that you can remove the top one, rinse, and recover w/o having to remove the white cover completely. It also means that if you're lazy and your kid gets one really dirty, you just remove it and voila you have a second one for the meal! The chair seat size is also pretty sizable compared to others I've seen.
The only con may be that the height isn't adjustable. But I didn't find that to be a problem w/ our furniture.
All in all, I love this high chair! I tried the Safety 1st one and also Rainforest vertion and both were lacking.
Customer Review: Great chair! Summary: 4 Stars
Assuming you are not expecting some type of miracle chair that makes your child sit still and behave, this chair will do what it is meant to do. My daughter has been using it for a year, from 12 months to 2 years, and she still loves it. It folds neatly, travels light, straps on securely and cleans up like a dream. When the straps get stained it goes in the diswasher and comes out sparkling. My daughter has never kicked off the tray or seemed unsafe in any way during a year of use. Naturally, she's buckled in, and we never leave her unattended. The tray takes a little getting used to to be sure it is securely attached, but reading the instructions tends to solve this problem, I think... just banging around without taking a moment to figure out the mechanics of the tray could be frustrating but would also just be silly. Washable crayons wipe right off the white tray, so my daughter creates new artwork every day while (thanksfully!) staying put. It is our only high chair and I have had no problems with it... love the swingout design. For the price, a fantastic product. I would definately purchase it again, and I recommend it to all my friends looking for a simple, easy to use, safe portable booster feeding chair.
