Baby Products Reviews of The First Years Night and Day Bottle Warmer System

Customer Review: Fantastic! Fast and calms the baby
Summary: 5 Stars

I pump exclusively because my baby has trouble latching on. Before getting this product, I used to heat milk by putting the milk filled bottle into hot water. It took forever to heat and or what seems like forever when you have a baby screaming for milk. The BabyPro heats us the milk very quickly and is very easy to use. I know there are compliants about the warmer not getting the milk hot enough or getting it too hot. The instructions say you are suppose to pour a certain amount of water into the machine depending on the milk quantity being used. My baby wants to eat at different times and so I heat up various quantities of milk throughout the day. I can't remember all the different suggested water amounts to pour. What I do is I just pour more water into the warmer and pick up the bottle the test the temperature once or twice. If I accidentally overheat, I put the bottle into a bowl of cold water. It works well for me.

The added bonus of this machine is that the heating unit makes a boiling water noise when it is working. My baby loves the sound of the boiling water (it also sounds like rainfall) and really stops crying when she hears the sound. So the warmer really has double duty. No longer does she scream at the top of her lungs at night and wakes my working husband. As soon as I hear my baby start to cry, I start up the warmer, put her next to it, changer her diaper while the milk is being heated, and let the warmer run a little longer while I am feeding her (you just put more water than what's recommended). Once I am done feeding her, the boiling water noise helps put her back to sleep. No more screaming at night. Of all the baby products I've purchased, this is by far my favorite and the most useful!!!

Oh yeah, I more thing. The cooler and ice pack lasts about 8 hours. It's been convenient not having to go to the kitchen/fridge to pick up the milk. Everything is all in one place where I need it and I get feed her and get back to sleep alot faster and quieter now.

Customer Review: Works O.K. but not Wowed!
Summary: 3 Stars

I've never used the bottle cooler part, so I can't comment on that. I think if you kept this unit in your bedroom or the babies room where you'd want to store some bottles in the cooler instead of having to go to the refridgerator to get them, it would serve a good purpose. But I always go out to the kitchen to use this, so it's easier to just grab a bottle from the fridge.

The little test-tube-looking water containers that you fill up and then pour into the unit to steam the bottles are a bit of a pain. The little caps that go on them are difficult to snap on and off with one hand when you have a screaming, hungry baby in the other arm! And it's hard to fill them up to the accurate measurement line under the faucet....basically, you constantly have to pour a little water out--Oh, wait, that was too much---fill it back up under the faucet--Oh, wait, that was too much...you see where I'm going with this. So, the water test-tube things aren't very user friendly.

The other thing is that the little basket and the container itself that the bottle goes into gets grungy pretty quickly. It leaves a brownish film on the basket and inside the hole where the basket goes into, so you have to clean it out frequently. And I've definately found that the amount of water they say to put in the steamer according to the size and temp. of the bottle isn't quite right. You really have to play with the amount of water it takes to appropriately warm the bottle up. Scrap the instructions!! Thankfully, my baby isn't very temperature-sensitive when it comes to taking her bottle.

On the positive side, I think using this thing is probably easier than running the bottle under warm tap water or putting it in a pan of boiling water because it does heat the bottle up rather quickly.

Customer Review: A must for a two story house!!!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this product! I purchased it when my daughter was 4 weeks old after seeing it on a friends baby registry. (when I saw what it was, I bought two, one for her and one for me!) My husband and I were constantly trying new ways to keep the bottles we brought upstairs before we went to bed cold and then find the easiest(and quickest) way to warm them in the middle of the night without having to go back downstairs. Once we bought the day and night warmer, we simply placed it on my nightstand and the bottles were ready to warm when baby cried! I will admit that the whole water measuring thing doesn't work very well, but once you get used to it, you just know how long it takes. I just pour a little water in and once I hear it boil, I wait about a minute and the bottle is done! I had the Avent warmer downstairs and liked this warmer so much better (because it is much faster!) that I bought the First Years basic bottle warmer for downstairs and packed the Avent one away! There are two things you need to know before using...1. If you are warming a VentAire or Dr. Brown's bottle unscrewing the nipple is a must! The heat messes with the whole vaccum process and the milk will leak out the top while heating and 2. the steam heats the bottles fast, but I have burnt a finger or two with the steam while heating a bottle in my sleepy state during those early weeks! Also, I love VentAire bottles, but the warm water/steam from bottle warmers can get trapped in the bottoms of the bottles...just tip the ventaire's around a bit to make sure there is no hot water trapped up inside the vent that will burn baby. (this happens with VentAire's in any traditional warmer that involves water)
Overall, this warmer/cooler saves me plenty of time (and sleep) during night feedings.

Customer Review: Inconsistent, but still sometimes convenient
Summary: 2 Stars

I have read some of the passionate (love/hate) reviews on this product, but I find myself in the middle. On the negative side, the warming is inconsistent and I'm not sure why. The same amount of water (to steam) and the same size bottle with the same amount of formula yields results that vary from room temperature to scalding hot.

The inconsistency greatly affects the convenience because you can not "set it and forget it." If you walk away too long, your bottle is blistering hot and now you're scrambling for a rapid way to cool with your baby is screaming in your ear. If you did not put enough water in it, the bottle will not be warm enough and you have to start again.

A good safeguard, put enough water in to assure it gets warm enough, but come back after three minutes and start checking the temperature (against your wrist) every minute until done to guard against scalding.

On the positive side, it warms relatively quickly (8oz from refrigerator to serving in about 5 minutes). The cooler's ice pak and storage works pretty well (about 8 hours of refrigeration).

However, if I were to do this again, I would spend less money and purchase the following 3 multi-tasker's to replace this dedicated unit. It would improve the consistency, give you versatility and save you money (which is always good with a new baby).

1) A Hot pot (or other inexpensive water boiling tool). Which you can also use to make tea/coffee, etc and boils 8oz of warming water in one minute.
2) A zippered thermal bag & ice pack (which you could use to store the bottles (or anything) when traveling as well).
3) A tall, wide ceramic coffee mug (to hold the warming water before and the water and bottle after boiling).

Customer Review: Love it -- but it takes a good "touch"
Summary: 4 Stars

I received this as a gift from a coworker, and just wish I'd had it for my first baby! As previous reviewers have noted, the chart giving water measurements for warming bottles is wildly inaccurate -- but, without making a truly complicated grid taking into account whether the bottle is cold, cool, or luke-warm, and bottle shape and size, I'm not sure how they could do a better job with the instructions.

Here's the low-down: it's as good a warmer as any I have tried, and the cooler makes it WONDERFUL for those of us living in two-story houses. I don't have to stumble down stairs in the dark as I did with my first child, which means it takes less time and I lose less sleep (new moms will appreciate this!).

Here's what I've learned about warming wide-mouthed (Avent, Soothies, etc.) bottles of various sizes:
- For wide-mouthed 6 oz. bottles coming straight from the fridge, double the water mark (for example, if you're warming 4 oz. of formula, fill the water to the 8 line).
- For wide-mouthed 10 oz. bottles coming straight from the fridge, double the water plus two (for example, if you're warming 4 oz. of formula, fill the water to the 10 line).
- For wide-mouthed bottles that are just cool (not cold), fill to the regular line plus one (for example, if you're warming 4 oz. of formula, fill the water to the 5 line).

These rules consistently work for my husband and me, and we rarely end up with a too-cool or too-hot bottle. So, after a little testing and re-testing, we've ended up being really happy with this bottle warmer!
