Baby Products Reviews of The First Years - Crib CD PlayerCustomer Review: Mixed Feelings....You Decide Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this for our son when he was born 3½ years ago. I loved it at first. For his first 6 months of life he slept in a bassinet and this conveniently attached to it and then came the crib issues where he would stand up and try to get it off the side which inadvertently made the cd skip, fall off the track and post the "E" sign. When he moved to a big boy bed we placed it on the dresser. I, unlike other users, had no trouble with the volume. In fact, I found myself turning it down on numerous occasions as I could here it in other rooms and it seemed like it was blaring. The cd compartment is a little hard to get into and yes it is a little noisy but who in their right mind is going to change a cd while their baby is already sleeping. It shouldn't take longer than the 20 songs or so on a regular lullaby cd to get your baby to sleep. Therefore I never had an issue with the noise of opening the cd compartment. The battery compartment on the other hand is a joke. I now have another baby and just a couple days ago was once again trying to open the battery compartment. I had to put all my strength into it and when it finally decided to open, the whole cd player flew out of my hand, hit the wall, the front compartment broke off and well needless to say wouldn't play another cd after that. It's ridiculous to have such an item for only 3½ years and then have to garbage it because it's so poorly made. On the other hand though, I was thankful to have it many times as it did lull my kids into dreaminess and listening to it on the baby monitor-it had the same effect on me. So I guess it serves it's purpose just inconveniently. I debated buying another one in hopes "First Years" would have fixed these issues but honestly I'd rather find another product who can make things right the first time.
Customer Review: I Can't Believe all the Bad Reviews Summary: 5 Stars
I am shocked at all of the bad reviews that this CD Player is getting. I did not register for this item, but someone purchased it for me anyway. I almost returned it because of all of the bad reviews that it got, but I thought I'd give it a try. I'm happy to say that my 5 month old has been using it since birth for almost all of his naps (3-4 a day) & sometimes twice a nap so that I can keep him slumbering! It plays for at least 1/2 hour each nap & I've only changed the batteries 3 times. That's pretty good if you ask me...how long do you expect that batteries last?!?! As far as the volume, I sometimes find that I have to put it down very low because I don't want it too loud for sleeping...I don't think children should feel like they're at a live concert when trying to doze off. At any rate, my baby has developed GREAT sleep habits, and I feel I owe a lot of that to the peace this little CD player provides. Yes it is a little pricy, but my son has a small room, and a CD player on a dresser would take from space that is already lacking. The only comment I can agree with is that it is a bit difficult to open the CD compartment, but I rarely change the CD so it's not really a problem for us. Also, I think they make it a little more difficult so that little prying hands can't get to the CD when they're able to stand. The light is dim, but I didn't intend to use the product for that feature anyway. I recommend that every parent gives this product a try...I'm glad I did!!
Customer Review: lovin' it Summary: 5 Stars
I have twin boys and a small nursery. There isn't much place to put a boombox but on the floor. After weeks of tripping over the boombox - and after one of my sons learned how to open the CD part of it - I finally decided to get this little CD player. It is *perfect* for what I need it for.
I love that:
- it clips to the crib
- it shuts off after the CD is through (or can be programmed for an amount of time to play)
- it has a little light (that shuts off after 5 minutes)
- it cannot be opened by a baby
- it is small and unobtrusive
- it is white and therefore blends in with my nursery (my boombox is black and all the other options I looked at were either black or some sort of bright/garish color)
I don't have any problem at all with: skipping, opening the battery compartment, babies taking the unit off the crib, not enough volume (I don't want it loud enough that I can hear it outside the nursery, I want it soft enough for them to go to sleep to). A lot of people here have complained about the battery compartment, but I just don't see the problem with it. If you have many baby toys that need batteries then you are probably used to needing a screwdriver for most of them - it keeps the baby from being able to open the battery compartment.
This is the only product like this that I have been able to find. It is absolutely perfect for my needs and a great addition to my nursery.
Customer Review: Good concept, but won't work like it should Summary: 3 Stars
I thought this was a marvel idea, as most everyone else thought. I even got it 50% off. No wonder. I do like that it attaches to the crib and it has a nightlight and can have a timer but the cons outweigh the pros. First off it does eat batteries quickly and changing the batteries is hard. Why do they make it so difficult to change batteries on baby toys? You ahve to unhook the light part then find(!) a screwdriver that fits the screw to unscrew it and then reassemble it all. There have been many a night when it would not work due to dead batteries and no screwdriver to be found or no batteries in the house. The most annoying thing is that the volume does not work. It is scratchy sounding like it has static in it. You have to find a certain millimeter area where the volume control will work. I did find that if I insert a small piece of cardboard under the dial it pushes it up and it will work correctly. I'm assuming mine is a lemon and I need to somehow exchange it. Also the volume never goes too loud. I would like it a little louder for when it is in our toddler's room on her chest of drawers. She can barely hear it. We also like to play fun, dance songs and can barely hear it. I think we are going to get a small cd player for her room that plugs in to save money on batteries and save our sanity. I wish this device had a place to plug it up. Good concept but doesn't work!
Customer Review: All in All a Great Product Summary: 4 Stars
This product has been a great addition to our nursery. It is one of the only products for children that plays normal CD's. I love that it hangs on the crib since space is an issue. I do like having the option of using it on the table top so it is versitule throughout the house and as the baby grows. I also like that the controls have an optional cover for protection from curious fingers. The timer and automatic shut off are a big plus! I agree that the night light is dim - but that is what I like about it - especially since it is so close to the child. Who wants a bright light shining in the babies face while they are tring to sleep? I also agree that the volume seems low initially, however, when all is quiet in the house and baby is trying to sleep - a little volume goes a long way. I suppose the product would grow more with the child if the volume could be increased. My only real complaint is the speed in which the batteries wear out. I have played mine every night for 2 weeks, and although the low battery symbol is lit, it keeps playing. Rechargeable batteries with an optional cord would be a nice revision to this product. All in all, we are very happy with this product.
