Baby Products Reviews of The First Years Breastflow Starter SetCustomer Review: NOT worth the money. Period. Summary: 2 Stars
For us the Cons outweighed any pros...
Cons:
1. Flow was insanely fast for my son from 2wks all the way to 6wks. He was drowning in milk.
2. Nipple TOO soft & too long...so it made my son gag & spit up every few sucks, and his feedings that should've taken 10 min would literally take 30...craziness.
3. Double nipple system means double washing (which we expected going into it).
4. Double nipple system ALSO means you have to release the milk that gets trapped in btwn the 2 every few sucks...which we did NOT expect!
5. All this means the bottles require an all out demonstration & tutorial to a husband, grandmother, babysitter, helpful friend, etc...unacceptable. Period.
6. Very Expensive, and in this case we didn't get a better product for the money.
Pros: I hear it has worked well for some babies, so it can't be ALL bad, right!? But it's definitely below average IMHO. If you do buy these I wish you more luck than we had!
Customer Review: Large nipple, difficult for baby to master Summary: 2 Stars
I bought these bottles because they were recommended by my lactation consultant, but my 2 month old could not figure out how to eat from these. A couple of times he did manage to get a good latch, but he also ended up taking in a lot of air because of the design of the nipple. My husband would sit with him for an hour and he'd barely take 1/2 ounce. My mom tried it with him too while she was visiting, and eventually we gave up and gave him the Medela bottles. We figured he already had a good latch and it wouldn't change his breastfeeding, and it hasn't. He's much happier with the Medela.
It may be because I started him on a bottle "late" or because my milk supply comes much faster than any bottle, but this product didn't work for us at all. I did, however, speak with another new mom who was trying the bottle with her 6 week old, and he was having issues as well. I am using the bottles to store my milk now though.
Customer Review: Great bottles- pain to clean Summary: 5 Stars
I used these with my breastfed baby for a short period of time for some medical reasons. She took to them right away and it wasn't an issue getting her to eat. The nipples did collapse on mine but not enough to cause a problem for her.
My only issue was that the inner nipple was a tad difficult to clean, nothing horrible but I had to hand wash all the nipples because the dishwasher couldn't get them clean.
I LOVED that I could watch and see that her latch on the bottle was the SAME as if she was nursing. When I ended my need to bottle feed (which was only for 1 week, thank god) I was able to pass them down to a friend and her baby loved them just as mine had.
When my daughter was a little older, about 2 months, I tried a bottle again (Avent, Dr. Brown, VentAir, Gerber and the ones from my pump, the Medela) and she wanted NOTHING to do with them. So the BreastFlow bottles were the ONLY ones she took.
Customer Review: A blessing for my c-section baby Summary: 5 Stars
My baby was a c-section baby. Though I had specified to the hospital that I intended to breastfeed, he was started on formula before I ever made it to the recovery room due to his low blood sugar. We spent four days in the hospital, and when we got home, it was nerve-wrecking to try and get him to latch on. We finally figured out the problem: the formula bottles at the hospital allowed him to rapidly suck down the formula, so when we were trying to breastfeed, he became frustrated at the slower flow of milk. We had purchased these bottles in advance after reading the reviews. We grabbed one out and poured the formula into it. After three feedings, we noticed a significant difference in his speed, not to mention fewer hiccups. Since then, I've been able to nurse him without the fussiness.
I cannot recommend these bottles enough. In fact, I went out and purchased two more today to keep in our diaper bag.
Customer Review: Too fast of flow Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this product based on other's reviews and how close the bottles are supposed to be to breastfeeding. My son drank the bottle in no time and thought he was still hungry for 10-15 minutes after. We had to use a pacifier to distract him until his belly caught up with his intake. The nipples seem to collapse the longer my son sucked, we had to constantly remove bottle, fix nipple, and drain milk caught between nipples back into the bottle.
My friends told me about the Dr. Brown bottles and showed me how the nipple flow performed. Dr. Brown's nipple flow was much slower, which compared to the breast. I bought the Dr. Brown bottles and could not be happier. My son eats slower, realizes he is full sooner, has less gas, and spits up less. I would not recommend the BreastFlow bottles to someone who is breastfeeding and using bottles as back ups because the flow is not comparable.
