Baby Products Reviews of The First Years Breastflow Starter KitCustomer Review: Good idea; poor execution and quality lacking Summary: 2 Stars
I was so excited to try these out since they really do seem like the perfect thing for typically breastfed babies. Maybe we just got a bad batch or something, but I hate these bottles. The outer nipple is designed to feel like a breast, but when my 3 month old gets it into her mouth it collapses onto itself, then the suction from trying to drink from it and the milk gathered in the nipple seem to create some kind of vacuum and make it hard for her to drink. At least that's what it looks like to me. Maybe she just hates them and is fighting me on it. This also seems to be one of the worst bottles that I've tried as far as air getting into the bottle and making baby uncomfortable. Since my daughter has/had some reflux and gas issues, it was a no-go for us. I also used ours pretty rarely and at least two of them (out of the starter set) have cracked already. They don't leak yet, but there are little fissures in a sunburst pattern on the bottom of the bottles. The plastic feels pretty thin and cheap, and apparently it is. It seemed like a good idea, but the quality leaves a lot to be desired, and the design, for whatever reason, isn't working out for us.
Customer Review: Very impressed! Summary: 5 Stars
I just happened upon this bottle while walking around in BRU. I did a double take when I saw the nipple - what a great design! It looks and feels more like a breast; and it works that way too. It requires both suction and compression, unlike other nipples/bottles.
I switched from the Playtex VentAire system to the Breastflow and here are some things I like better:
1. Thicker plastic - the Breastflow bottles fell more sturdy and the edges aren't sharp (I actually cut myslef while cleaning a Playtex bottle).
2. The outer nipple is soft and supple but holds up well. I have 4 Playtex nipples that are all ready cracked (after only 4 weeks of part time use!).
3. The nipples also clean up better. I would scrub the Playtex nipples and still see a film on them. Not so with the Breastflow nipples.
4. Less to assemble - the VentAire bottles have more parts (not that bad) but fewer parts means less chance for leaks.
This bottle/nipple design is just amazing. My boy latches on to this bottle just like he would latch on to the breast - no confusion, no rejection. It just works!
Customer Review: Not BPA Free Summary: 2 Stars
I realized when I received this set that it was not BPA free, so I returned it. I gave them 2 stars because I do not like the version that is not BPA free. However, I was able to get a set that was BPA free from another vendor and I would highly recommend these bottles, as long as they are the BPA free version. My breastfeeding son adapted to them at one month of age without any fuss and has not experienced any nipple confusion as a result. I introduced them at 1 month so he could get used to them and then began using them regularly for my expressed breastmilk when I would go to work at my part-time job when he was 2 months old. I can see when he is drinking from the bottle that he is using the same motions that he uses when he nurses and I think that is absolutely wonderful. Also, FYI, he is now 6 months old and has always used the stage 1 slow flow nipples and has never had a problem with that. I think that the slow flow are closer to the rate of flow from the breast so I do not intend to ever switch to a medium flow nipple. These are great bottles for a breastfed baby - if they are BPA free!
Customer Review: Best Bottle for Exclusively Breast feed babies Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter is also an exclusively breastfed baby and disliked all bottles until we found the BreastFlow. We've tried them all - Playtex, Gerber, the Breast Bottle (which looks like a real breast), Dr. Brown's, etc. She would scream at the sight of any bottle. I was stressed out not only because she only wanted my breast, but I was heading back to work when she was 3 months and didn't want her to "starve" during the day until I got home. Needless to say for 2 months she would either sleep all day and eat all night or my mom-in-law would use a medicine dropper/Haberman feeder to feed her while I was at work. It was frustrating for both myself as I didn't get a break and for my husband as he couldn't help out with feedings. Then my mom-in-law found this bottle and slowly introduced it to her. She now grabs the bottle when she wants it and will even take it from me. I pump while at work and provide the expressed milk to my mom-in-law to feed to my daughter during the day. She is now 6 months old and doing great with the bottle. It is a must if you have a fussy feeder that only wants the breast.
Customer Review: As close to breastfeeding as you can get Summary: 4 Stars
First, let me point out that this set does not come with 3 5-oz. bottles as stated, it only comes with 2.
I bought this set because I was very concerned that my 6 week old daughter would not take a bottle and then go back to me. These bottles are great for anyone concerned about the same thing. I have watched as she drinks from this bottle and she does have to do the same sucking action as required to drink from the breast. Usually I have to give her a little sqirt of milk to she will know what it is I am giving to her and then she'll latch on. I have had no problems with these bottles leaking as others have.
The problems I do have with these: my daughter still gets to much milk to fast and they do nothing to keep her from sucking in a lot of air and getting gassy. So, the flow is still faster (as with any bottle) than what she gets from me and I keep a bottle of gas drops on hand after she's had one.
Although I like these bottles for breastmilk, once I start giving her other liquids to drink, when she is of age, I will switch to a different brand.
