Baby Products Reviews of The First Years Breastflow Starter KitCustomer Review: I could kiss the person who designed these bottles... Summary: 5 Stars
I am personally responsible for keeping Amazon in business, and yet this is my first product review. I am SO IMPRESSED with these bottles that I have to TELL THE WORLD.
My three month old breastfed daughter HATES bottles. She has taken them a few times out of necessity, but it has been a horrible, drawn-out scene that leaves her exhausted, and leaves whatever poor soul had to feed her downright shaken.
I read the other reviews here and have to say that every WONDERFUL thing that everyone else said is COMPLETELY TRUE. It took her about five minutes of exploring, then she latched on just like she does at the breast. Not a drop of milk dribbled into her mouth before she was ready, as happens with the other bottles. She was even able to do her little sucking rituals... (if you know what I mean, then your kid must do them, too). These are FANTASTIC. They have SAVED MY LIFE. Tomorrow I'm going to go get a haircut and the baby's going to stay home with daddy. OH, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!
I also found that The First Years has a website about these bottles, where you can watch a video of kids drinking from them. You'll see that they're nothing like a regular bottle. They're much, much BETTER.
Buy them. You won't regret it. Shoot, I'd buy them for you if I had the money.
Customer Review: you can use avent tempo liners if concerned about bpa Summary: 4 Stars
Our frequent-feeding baby took to these bottles right away and was able to switch back and forth between breast and bottle without a hitch. This bottle has helped to maintain our sanity by letting my wife skip one feeding a day to catch up on sleep. Only the hard plastic/polycarbonate bottle is not BPA-free, but BPA is not present in the double nipple system (inner and outer) which is why we bought this product in the first place. I believe another reviewer commented that the Avent Tempo disposable liners (which are BPA-free) fit these bottles perfectly. We have found this one-two combo to work well, and have found that the liners also reduce air-swallowing as they slowly collapse during feeding. That said, we did do some research on BPA and it seems that it leaches only over time/heat, so using the bottle without a liner a couple times in an emergency when it is still new would be okay too. We have not noticed any problems cleaning the inner/outer nipple after disassembly. So long as the baby latches on properly, I haven't had any problems with the outer nipple collapsing during feeding. Proper latch also seems to minimize milk collecting between the inner and outer nipples. If this were to happen, remember to press the outer nipple inward at two of the four tabs (not just any two, look for the two specifically with holes) to let the precious milk drain back into the bottle.
Customer Review: Hate these bottles Summary: 1 Stars
I have 8 month old twins and have been using these bottles from the beginning. I would NEVER recommend these bottles to anyone. I wanted to nurse my twins, and did so successfully for four months. We always supplemented with a few bottles a day, but when I went back to work I could not manage pumping so we completely switched to bottles. I consider myself (bachelors degree and two masters degrees)and my husband competent people (bachelors and masters degrees) and we both have read the directions for how to assemble these bottles. They are not difficult directions, so I know I am putting them together correctly. The problem with these bottles is that they leak at almost every feeding. I have one child who takes the entire bottle in one go, but the other must stop and start. This is where we encounter the majority of our problems. The leaks usually occur when there is formula between the two nipples and you set the bottle down. It then slowly drips out of the seal around the bottle. There are other times when the bottles actually leak when feeding the child, again from around the seal. These are a major frustration in our life. Unfortunately my children are used to the nipples and it would be a huge problem to switch to a new type of bottle, so my husband and I have resigned ourselves to dealing with these leakage problems for the next several months.
Customer Review: LOVE LOVE LOVE Summary: 5 Stars
I love these bottles. I have been using them for about 2 months now. I breastfeed my daughter, but she has also had expressed breast milk in a bottle from the beginning as well. I tried the playtex nursers and she had a lot of gas. Then I tried the NUK bottles and she did well. She had less gas. I even tried the Playtex nursers with the orthodonic nipple. In the end I went through about 6 diffrent types of bottles. One of my big fears was that she would not want nurse anymore and want just the bottle. Then I found these bottles. I could not find them locally so I had to order them. I did eventually find them at Babies R Us. My daughter laches right on to these bottles.I have had no problems with gas with these bottles. On the box it recommends to only use the stage 1 nipples when you breast feed, but when I bottle fed her it would take her 45 minutes, so I did buy the stage 2 nipples and now she can finish a bottle when she is really hungry in 15-20 min. This is about the same time she nurses and I have not had a prob with her not wanting to nurse. She still perfers to nurse. The stage 2 nipples do drip a little bit into her mouth w/o her sucking which the stage 1 nipples did not do. Overall they are great they are easy to clean even though there is an extra part to clean.
Customer Review: Awesome Buy! Summary: 5 Stars
My son both breast feeds and bottle feeds, however he is much more relaxed and satisfied after breastfeeding. So, when I saw these bottles (we had been using Avent) I thought that I would give them a try, especially since they were a lot less expensive than the Avent brand. As soon as I put the bottle to my son's mouth, he latched on as if he were breastfeeding! It was amazing. There is a 'letdown' feature that mimicks that of mommy's breast! My son was just as satisfied with this bottle as he was with Mommy! This makes it wonderful because I had been wanting to stop breastfeeding for quite some time. The dome cap snaps onto the bottom of the bottle so you don't lose it! With the starter pack, you get snack cups/formula containers and these snap onto the bottom as well... making a quick trip very easy because you just have to grab one thing (well maybe a burp cloth too!) and you're on your way! These are THE BEST BOTTLES FOR BREASTFEEDING OR WEANING! I have recently started using the Soothie bottles as well because I now trust The First Years brand and my son loves his Soothie Pacifier. He has taken to these bottles wonderfully. Do not waste your money on anything else!!!!
