Baby Products Reviews of The First Years Breastflow Starter KitCustomer Review: My little guy and I love these!!! Summary: 5 Stars
When it was time for me to go back to work, I was a little worried about what type of bottles I would use for my son. My experience with weaning my now-ten-year-old daughter from breast to bottle was quite horrifying. Both of us were crying: she because she wanted breast when I wanted her to get used to the bottle and I was crying because she was screaming and crying so much and I knew this was something that she would eventually have to get used to, and nobody likes it when their baby is miserable. I finally had to call on my mother to help me get my daughter accustomed to taking a bottle nipple. Fast forward ten years to a new baby and time to go back to work and I really didn't want to go through that experience again. Also I wanted to pump breastmilk at work to ensure that my son would be breastfed for a little while longer. After receiving an advertisement in my email from LearningCurve for these bottles and after looking at the website and reading different reviews I decided to give these bottles a try. And boy am I glad I did! My son was 12 weeks old when I first tried these bottles and nipples with him, and he sucked as if I was nursing him from my breast! My husband and I couldn't believe what we were seeing and hearing - since my little one was sucking quite loudly and vigorously! I was so happy and relieved that neither of us would have a traumatic experience trying to get him to take a bottle nipple. And he has absolutely no problems going from breast to bottle and back again. It's almost as if he doesn't know the difference. Thank you, thank you for these bottles; I am convinced that they have saved both my son and me from days and days of crying.
Customer Review: Great bottle for breast fed babies! Summary: 4 Stars
My son was born with jaundice and was under the bili lights from 20 hours old - 4 days off and on. I still breastfed every three hours but if anyone reading this has had a baby with jaundice, they know how hard it is to wake them to nurse. By the time I got him awake enough to latch on, it was time for him to go back under the bili light so I decided that I would use these bottles (I brought a few with me to the hospital) to feed him with while he was under the lights since feeding him with the bottle could happen without taking him out. We tried and tried to get him to latch on to the nipple on the bottle but he just wouldn't do it so we tried taking the blue piece out and that worked like a charm! It makes it alot softer and easier for him to latch on to. That does take away to whole point of the let down action but at least the nipple is shaped more like mommy's. He is now three weeks old and is still breastfeeding like a champ with between one and two bottles a day depending on if we are out and about. We have also started using the blue piece again but are having trouble with the nipple collapsing some. If you screw on the bottle too tight that happens and if you dont screw it on tight enough it leaks so sometimes it works great and other times not as well and that's why I gave it four stars instead of five. Other than that one little problem I love these bottles. They truly were a godsend for my little one and so glad I saw these in the store. I think that using these has made my breastfeeding experience with my son possible.
Customer Review: Best Bottle for Breastfed Babies Summary: 5 Stars
I've had trouble breastfeeding since day one. My daughter is now 4 months old and has been breastfeeding with zero formula supplements since 7 weeks. The First Years Breastflow bottle made the transition from partial formula supplementation to exclusive breastfeeding much, MUCH easier for both me and my daughter.
These bottles have a brilliant design and there is no bottle like it out there on the market. Other bottles claim to be "natural nursers" and "most like mother," but they do not hold a candle to the Breastflow!! At first I used the Playtex Drop-Ins system with my daughter, but she took a bottle so often at first that she began to refuse the breast and had a difficult time opening her mouth wide enough to latch on properly. The Breastflow corrected both problems, because A) the milk came out slowly and steadily like it does at the breast (it comes out to quickly for her in other bottles), and B) the unique nipple forced my daughter to open her mouth wide as if she were at the breast, making the transition from bottle to breast a lot easier.
The only con I can think of is that the nipples are a bit hard to figure out, so if you leave your child with a caretaker who doesn't know how to fit the nipple together properly, the bottle could end up leaking milk.
Other than that, these are totally worth your money. We must have 10 of them at home! They are definitely the best bottle for breastfed babies, in my opinion, and I hope they work for you, too.
Customer Review: I love these bottles! Summary: 5 Stars
I really don't think it's fair to ever give bottles low reviews unless there is a quality issue. Whether or not your baby takes them is a personal thing and will differ by child, but it doesn't mean the bottles aren't good. My guy took to these right away and goes between nursing and the bottle all the time.
As for the quality, I have owned two of the starter kits. I had horrible leaking issues with the first kit. And no, I'm not an idiot, I'm capable of putting the bottle together correctly. After I had thrush, I had to throw all my bottles away, so I had to replace the kit. The second batch I got may have been a redesign, there were some differences in the way the blue nipple was designed. This helped drain the milk that accumulated between the two nipples much easier. So, at some point the quality really improved. I still have an occasional leak, but I just take apart and reassemble and that takes care of it.
This kit is great for the occasional bottle feeder, it has just what you need, no more and no less.
If you are concerned about BPA (these are not BPA free), Avent bottles have a drop-in liner for their Tempo wide-mouth bottles. They fit the Breastflow bottles perfectly and you therefore avoid having to have the milk touch the bottle. Plus, you really then don't have to sterilize the bottle which is how they say the BPA eventually gets released.
These are an awesome first step for any breastfeeding mom who is ready to give a bottle.
Customer Review: In 2008 Learning Curve First Year Products DID NOT offer a BPA free bottle product Summary: 1 Stars
UPDATE 2010: Please take into consideration the date in which I wrote the following review. At the time, they DID NOT provide BPA free products and everything I wrote below is true. However, now, it is true that they are providing BPA free products and I congratulate them on making the change.
The Learning Curve First Year company does not make a Bisphenol-A free baby bottle product INCLUDING their Breastflow products. I did not learn of this until recently and had the misfortune of buying some first. When I tried to return the items to the company directly, they refused. In their email to me they do not deny having BPA in their bottles and stated directly: "Our baby bottles are polycarbonate and may contain Bisphenol A." They actually believe their polycarbonate BPA bottles are safe and refuse to take a proactive stance to create something BPA free. Please don't buy this product and take the risk of exposing your baby to BPA. If I can offer any advice, please...take the time to do the research and find a safe bottle for your baby. They should be ashamed of themselves and I will happy be boycotting First Year/Learning Curve brands because they obviously do not care about their customers or the safety and welfare of our children. It apparently is going to take a lawsuit of some sort once one of their bottles is proven to have caused harm to a child and they will feel ashamed for not doing something beforehand to protect our babies.
