Baby Products Reviews of The First Years 5 in 1 Carry Me Near Sleep System, CreamCustomer Review: More than just a Great Bassinet! Summary: 5 Stars
Honestly, the negative reviews of this bassinet have me baffled. If you have ever had another bassinet you know that they are pretty much a waste of money after the first few weeks of having your baby. The littlest babies will use it to sleep in, but they grow out of it so quickly. This one however, is worth the money because you have literally 4 more reasons to keep using it for months. I have a 6 month old and while she has grown out of the bed, we still use the carry around feature and the play lights and sounds and she gets to sit up and play in any room we are in. If I had bought a standard bassinet (and I did for my two older kids)-this purchase would have lost its use months ago. We also use the diaper changer for the downstairs-it is very easy to move from room to room; and I still have all of the baby's blankies and burp cloths in the bottom storage basket, too.
As for the uncomfortable mattress.. I havent seen a comfy bassinet mattress ever, because of the risk of SIDS. They want our babies to sleep on thin, board-like sponges nowadays to avoid suffocation. It is a ridiculous result of our litigious society and is not the fault of the bassinet or of The First Years. I believe this bassinet to be super comfy with its soft sides, etc. All items that would touch the baby is covered in soft breathable fabric-I wanted to sleep in there. :)
Two things that could be improved on our A) The wheel locks lock too easy and you are constantly unlocking them to move it (maybe for safety..???) and B) The music is a bit annoying and piercing, we stick with the nature sounds-they could have kicked that up a notch like Fisher-Price. All in all this really is a great bassinet!
Customer Review: Love This Item!!! Summary: 4 Stars
I registered for this item and was a little sceptical because the reviews I had seen were 50/50. I ended up taking the chance and I am so glad I did!
My daughter is a week old and I have yet to actually use the changing table... I am to impatient to raise the bassinett and take off the top. But this item is still worth buying.
The light actually lights up our whole room with a very soft pleasent light. And I love the fact that it is almost perfectly level to our bed when lowered, it makes it so easy to lean over and check on baby in the middle of the night. And I love the fact that it rocks!
The only things I didnt like about the bassinett are:
*It is a pain to lower and raise... wich is why I havent used the changing table yet.
*It is way to easy to activate any of the features on the handle such as the music and the light... I accidentally hit the buttons in the middle of the night all the time. Our dog leaned over the edge to check out the baby and turned on the music.
*The base is the bassinett is wide... we dont have a lot of trouble getting it through the doorway, but we have little room on that side of the bed and I have hit my toes on the wheels many time. They stick out a little to far.
I absolutely love this item! I was given another bassinett, but registered for this one anyway. If I hadnt recieved it I would have gone and boughten it myself, its well worth it. And while I am all about pink pink pink for my daughter I really do lie the neutral colors... and that says alot!
Customer Review: Peace and Peace of Mind Summary: 4 Stars
My husband and I love this bassinet/changing table combination. We did a lot of research before settling on this model. I was almost paranoid about our son turning over and suffocating, so the real selling point here was the restraint that holds our baby on his back for sleeping. It is not tight but is very secure. I agree with one reviewer that the changing table has an obvious drawback in that the cover cannot be removed for washing. We spot clean it after "accidents" and use a waterproof pad under baby to minimize "accidents". With a boy we occassionally have a fountain that gets away from us. But, spot cleaner and baby detergent work great! The light is a bit harsh and we seldom use it, but our son loves the vibration, music and sounds. Especially, the heartbeat and running water. We have not had to change batteries at all and the sound is still strong. We also use the seat quite often now that our son is able to hold his head really well at two months. I also agree that the cradle was a bit heavy at first when I came home after a c-section and hubby had to remove it for diaper changes. That is not an issue now and I can easily remove it with one hand while holding baby in the other arm. I am only about 5 ft tall and a bit of a weakling. We have recently began using a positioner instead of the restraint, mostly for a pilow to prevent baby's head from flattening. We don't move it from room to room, but it does fit through our doorways. Overall, we are really happy with it and will be sad to see him outgrow it to move to his crib.
Customer Review: Cumbersome and poorly made Summary: 1 Stars
First of all this bassinette is a pain to get through standard doorways and ours is a relatively new house. You have to angle it going through a doorway. Also its rocking legs get in the way. It's hard not to stumble on them. The changing table is a pain to use. You have to remove the bed to get to it. The bed is not secured by anything. Don't raise the frame to the highest setting or it will tip over if the wheels are not locked in place. The "mattress" is very thin and needs extra padding if you want your baby to be comfy in it. We had to add lots of extra padding in ours in order not to feel the hard split board in the bottom. You can't find extra mattress covers that will work unless you get rid of that terrible belt that is part of the pad. We got rid of that in ours. The music/vibrator/light did not work at first so we kept fiddling with the battery pack and eventually got it working but that took longer than the actual assemble of the bassinette. Also the hood would not stay propped up on its own either.
We saw many at Babies-r-Us, where we bought it, that the boxes looked like they were previously opened. We bought one that had no signs of tampering. Thankfully all the parts were there but we should have realised why there so many previously opened boxes.
It may look nice but "don't judge something by how it looks".
Avoid buying this thing. We've seen better bassinettes out there after seeing this thing's faults. Too bad its too late to return this awful bassinette.
Customer Review: Dangerous and Not user Friendly...... Summary: 1 Stars
I was very unhappy with my choice in bassinets - this item is not user friendly and let me explain why -
1) You will never use the changing table because the sleeper is to heavy to lift every time you have to change a diaper and as you all know you change a lot of dirty diapers in one day. And if you do use it and your baby has an accident and it leaks off of the plastic portion of the changing table to the material you can't take it off to wash it because in assembling the bassinet it's screwed in to the assembly brackets. And if you were able to easily remove it you still wouldn't be able to throw it in the wash because the bottom portion is wood.
2) The built in night light does not illuminate anything, the light is very weak.
3) The musical tunes are not easy listening for you or your baby.
4) The vibration doesn't vibrate anything but the handle of the carrier.
5) With all of these option you'll have to replace the batteries on a daily basis.
6) I could live with all of the above but what I most disliked about this product was the lack of cushioning the bassinet walls offer. If you have a baby that moves a lot like I do he or she will wind up banging their heads on the the metal brackets of the bassinet, which could be extremely dangerous to their sensitive heads.
The only thing I liked about this product is that you can adjust the height of the bassinet - this option is definitly not worth purchasing it. If only I had known sooner.
