Baby Products Reviews of The First Years 5 in 1 Carry Me Near Sleep System, CreamCustomer Review: I subtracted one star because the music/vibrate goes off too soon Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this bassinet used on ebay for less than half of the price.
This bassinet was really perfect all around.
My son LOVED the music and vibrate, it helped soothe him to sleep...The vibrate helped my little ones gassy tummy. The only thing is my husband and I really wish they put a timer on the music and vibrate! Sometimes our son would wake up after the 10 minute timer ended. We found it was best to sneak to the baby's bed RIGHT when the timer went off and set it off a second time.
What my husband and I did is by the time our son was getting
big for this bassinet (around three months) and could hold his
head up a little we put him in the fisher price power plus
plug in swing ALL night.I used a car seat head supporter
for when he was very young. He started sleeping up to 12
hours a night at around 3-4 months because of this swing!
So, put your baby in this bassinet until they can hold
their head up a bit then move them on over to a plug in swing.
It's so sturdy I can now use it for our next baby.
It was very portable and little.
Had a lot of great fetures.
SAFE! Super cute.
I highly recommend it!
Things I loved about this little bed:
*The soothing vibrate
*The calming music and sounds
*Very portable (locking wheels on the bottom)
*Top of bed comes undone so you can use it easily for travel
(such as to a hotel)
*Easy to esemble
*Pretty design that is unisex
*Cute mobile
*The mesh breathable sides by baby's face
(GREAT FOR BABY'S SAFETY for us moms who fear SIDS)
*Sturdy
Things I didn't use:
*The rocking feature (You can rock it yourself)
*The changing bed under the bassinet
Things I didn't like:
*I couldn't find a bassinet matress that fit it securly enough
*Matress could have been a little thicker
*Vibrate and music stops too soon
Customer Review: Great bassinet with a couple of irks Summary: 4 Stars
Overall, this bassinet was a great purchase. It does everything it is intended for. Unfortunately our son had a severe case of acid reflux and he really would not sleep much in the bassinet, even with his head raised. We had to switch to co-sleeping so we could assist him quickly when he gagged or spit up. At night we would use this bassinet as the changing table, although it was a tad short as a changing table, but it worked. During the day he could nap in his bassinet. We loved the night light, vibration, and water sounds as the latter two soothed our son and the night light helped whenever we heard choking or needed to check on him. It was bright enough to see, but not so bright it blinded you. All three are on timers, so they turn off after a bit.
One aesthetic problem we had was the handle of the bassinet had manufacturer's stickers on it, showing all the functions, which was nearly impossible to get off. I scrubbed on it for hours and there is still a dirty looking residue outline on the handle from the impossible adhesive. I don't know if this was just our unit or not, but it is annoying to have something new, not be perfect in appearance.
Also in the bassinet, the head can be raised which is a wonderful feature. The only problem is that there needs to be one more setting. Down, the bed was too flat and up was too upright. It would be much better if there was one more setting in the middle of these two. Instead, we ended up using my Boppy pregnancy wedge to raise his head at just the right height.
This is our first child and if I knew what I knew now I probably would have gotten a co-sleeper bed instead of the bassinet. I was adamant against co-sleeping until our little one arrived and had so many digestive issues that the bassinet wasn't an option for us. However, for those not in need of co-sleeping, this bassinet does work great and I would recommend it.
Customer Review: DO NOT BUY! Comfort sacrificed for foldability. Summary: 1 Stars
1. A 90-day warranty is unrealistic and insufficient for a product such as this, which is often purchased well in advance of its first use. Mine was purchased 85 days before my daughter came home, and it was quite some time before we used it regularly.
2. The bassinet consists of three bottom panels. Whether by manufacture or design, there is a significant (3/4") ridge where the top and middle panels meet, and this IS very perceptable through the mattress. There is also a smaller ridge where the middle and bottom panels meet. The bottom of the bassinet also sags considerably. Bottom line, it's uncomfortable for baby.
3. When I called Customer Service, I was flatly denied any help because the warranty had expired. When I requested to speak to a supervisor, I was told that she was on the phone (I said I would wait), then unavailable (I said I would wait until one was available), and then I was told that a supervisor would call me back as soon as one became available. I waited one week and then called back. At that time I was able to speak to a supervisor...
4. After reviewing my situation, I was told that The First Years would be "more than willing," and "happy" to replace my bassinet. However, they reneged (via e-mail) after I sent pictures illustrating the problem (see "customer images"), because The First Years' engineers and designers "do not believe [the] bassinet is defective... They are all designed the same way." (So this is not a mistake? The bassinet is DESIGNED to have an uncomfortable ridge across the width of it???) The First Years manager also stated that, "With the addition of the padding, there should be no interference with baby's comfort." This is NOT TRUE. Please, take a look at the pictures. Would you want to put your baby to sleep on this surface?
-->Unless you value foldability over the comfort of your baby, DO NOT BUY this product.
Customer Review: Happy but don't use all bells & whistles Summary: 3 Stars
I have a newborn who sleeps in this bassinet next to our bed. I bought it based on the high Amazon.com reviews. I'm very pleased with this product, but found that we don't use a lot of the bells and whistles. For instance, I don't really use the storage container in the bottom of the bassinet because I keep all her baby supplies elsewhere in the room. I've never used the changing table, which lies underneath the bassinet because it's just as easy to change the baby on the bed, especially in the middle of the night. I've also never had a reason to actually carry the baby to another room, thereby, using the "carry-me" function! I've also never put the wheels down to use as a cradle. The thing has a vibration mechanism...why would I need to manually rock the bassinet??
That said, I LOVE the vibration and sound functions on the handle of the bassinet. My baby likes the vibration and there are many sounds to choose from that helps to lull the baby to sleep. The nightlight on the bassinet is also TOTALLY helpful when checking on baby or doing a midnight feeding/diaper change. You don't have to turn on the bright lights in the room...the light given off by the bassinet is plenty and at the same time, it's not bright enough to completely wake up baby and hubby.
Complaints: The vibration and sound mechanism shuts off after a few minutes so you have to keep turning them back on. I wish you could set it to go for 10, 15, 30 minutes, etc. This thing does eat up batteries, too, but what do you expect I guess! The batteries last me one month. Also, it took me over an hour to assemble it and the manufacturer's product stickers on the handle were TERRIBLE to remove. I had to use a blade and Goo Gone to get the stickers off. So stupid and unnecessary to put them on with that much glue!
Would recommend but you may not use all the functions that come with it.
Customer Review: Big Fans! Summary: 4 Stars
At first I was aprehensive about getting a bassinet...but for us it has been a lifesaver. Our master suite is upstairs and the baby's room is downstairs. During the day, she naps in her crib in her room but at night the bassinet makes it so easy for us...I can't imagine running downstairs in the night. Some people who criticize bassinets say because the baby is right there, you respond to little sounds instead of giving the baby time to get comfy and go back to sleep herself. Well, trust me, we're so tired that we do NOT jump up with every grunt or squeak. In fact, I think because I hear her sounds I've learned what are normal sleeping sounds and what sounds are true distress sounds.
As for the features of this bassinet...we have not used the changing table or the bed leveler. We have it on a rocking feature although, rocking the bassinet doesn't seem to soothe our baby. We have taken the top off a few times...in the mornings I will carry her into the bathroom so she can sleep nearby when I shower (you can't hear using a monitor.) When we visit grandparents we also take this along so the baby can stay on her sleep schedule. (Why don't we just use the carseat at their houses? My pediatrician told us NOT to allow the baby to sleep in the carseat when we are not in the car.)
As for other's criticisms:
I used Carters bassinet sheets...they fit great.
The mattress is a bit flimsy, but we use one of those baby positioners that prevents SIDS on top of the mattress which is firm and comfy for baby. Occaisionally the SIDS thingy is in her crib and I didn't want to run down stairs...baby does not seem bothered by the mattress.
One word of advice...this bassinet cannot function as a cosleeper. You can make it the same level as the bed but it has a high side so its not like you can reach out and easily soothe baby using this feature.
