Baby Products Reviews of The First Years 3 Pack Breastflow Bottle, 5 OunceCustomer Review: Not so great Summary: 2 Stars
We bought these bottles when we had to begin supplementing our daughter at two weeks old. They were recommended by our doula and lactation consultant because they are supposed to minimize nipple preference. Our daughter never developed a good latch, hence the need for supplementing, so I can't speak to that. But, I find these bottles to be cheaply made. They leak frequently, and the white caps that come with them fit so poorly that every time I try to shake up a bottle of formula, it spills all over my hand and the counter. We have to shake it very gently over the sink, and then rinse and dry the outside of the bottle before attaching the nipple. Then, the nipple/ring leaks sometimes too. Messy! I also do not like how the outside nipple collapses, leaving red marks on the baby's mouth. The product website claims the nipple is supposed to collapse to minimize air getting swallowed. As other reviewers mentioned, lots of milk gets trapped between the two nipples. There are tabs that you are supposed to press to get the milk to drain back into the bottle, but they don't usually work very well and I have to keep squeezing it and rotating the bottle to drain the milk, and not all of it goes back down. Overall, I've had it with these bottles and I just ordered a few different brands to try. Hopefully we find something that works for us.
Customer Review: Works as marketed, but has some inconveniences Summary: 4 Stars
I have twins and am using breastflow bottles. I think the bottles do simulate breast feeding well, as our twins have no trouble moving between bottles and breasts. They do control flow properly, and I am happy with these. Also tried Playtex, and those don't restrict flow as much.
We have 4 sets, and I have experienced issues with the product. Specifically:
1. Inner nipple is unreliable-I have had the silicon of 6 inner nipples bend or form a bubble, making it useless. I am following the instructions and am cleaning them as instructed.
2. The mixing lid-This is terrible. It does not close properly on almost any attempt. Basically, it will close unevenly, and then when you shake the bottle to mix the formula, it will leak out of the bottle slowly, which means milk will fly everywhere when you are mixing formula. Maybe 3 out of the dozen I have actually close properly.
3. The inner/outer lid assembly-When you press the milk release tab lightly as instructed, the bottle will frequently have milk leak out the sides under the collar. This is extremely messy. There is also, almost always, some milk which will not drain out.
Customer Review: Mimics breastfeeding best Summary: 5 Stars
I have been very happy with the performance of the BreastFlow bottles. I too had started out using Avent bottles after hearing rave reviews of them when I was still pregnant. However, I found that the Avent nipples basically poured and dumped the milk into my daughter's mouth; she would go through 4 ounces in 4 minutes, wearing about half an ounce on her bib. Then when she returned to breastfeed later, she'd have a very disorganized suck from nipple confusion.
These BreastFlow bottles and their unique (though uncomplicated) nipples mimic breastfeeding so much better that she'll even take a bottle from me. We have no more problems alternating between breast and bottle. It now takes her about 10-12 minutes to finish a 4 oz bottle, sometimes up to 15 minutes, which is about the same duration she spends breastfeeding. She doesn't end up wearing most of her meal, either.
Overall, I would recommend this to any breastfeeding mother who has to offer her baby a bottle. Even the caregivers at my daughter's daycare were impressed with the performance of the BreastFlow system.
Customer Review: Traveling Momma Summary: 5 Stars
I've been exclusively breastfeeding my son but figured it would be good to introduce a bottle so that my husband or others could feed him (son is 4 mo old). I've tried Medela, Avent, Dr. Browns 1 and premie, Tommee Tippee and now Breastflow. All but the Tommee Tippee and Breastflow were way too fast for my son and he would choke then not want to take the bottle any more. Tommee Tippee was decent- he would take it but try to push it out a lot and only eat a fraction of milk. We decided to try Breastflow and he took to it right away. The flow is perfect for him and he can control how much he gets once the 2nd chamber is filled. I think this is the best bottle out there that is most like the breast. I did have it leak on me once out of the 8 times we have fed our son with it. I love how the bottle is nice and wide- less chance to fall over if knocked, and the top can attach to the bottom of the bottle to keep it from getting lost or dirty. The bottle is easy to clean and there are only 5 parts to it (including the lid).
Customer Review: Finally a bottle my baby loves!!! Summary: 5 Stars
My wife breastfeeds, but when I am watching my son, I obviously feed him from the bottle. Well up until yesterday my son would not take the bottle from me. He would start sucking and then resist the rest of the way. I have tried Medela, Aventi, Dr. Browns, etc, and none of them worked. I was in BRU the other day, and this one caught my eye. I had almost given up on trying different bottles, but I am sure glad I made one last attempt. I introduced this bottle to my son yesterday, and he loves it!!! I thought maybe the first time he may have just been overly hungry, but I tried it again 3 more times, and he took it every time. This may not be true for some people, but for me, this bottle is a miracle. Nothing more frustrating then watching your baby cry because he is hungry, and not being able to do a thing about it. Well, now I can. Thank you First Years. Another great product from your company.
