Baby Products Reviews of The First Year's Infant To Toddler Tub with Sling, Blue

Customer Review: Great tub for under 6 months
Summary: 4 Stars

We received this tub as a gift when our daughter was just a week old. We didn't use it until after her umbilical cord had fallen off, and she always had excellent head control, so we never used the cradle part of it.

I had been concerned because our kitchen sink is awkward, but the tub fit right in with no problems. The supports underneath are rather ingenious, and both double and single sinks. We didn't even have to take out the in-sink dish drainer that is one side of our double sink!

The green grip material on the infant side of the tub does a great job. My daughter had a tendency to tip to the side at first, but she never slipped up or down. The seating ridge at the bottom is also well placed...it gave her something to brace her bottom against and kick her feet in the water.

The colour-change plug was very handy, especially at first when we were getting the hang of what is too warm for a baby. If it's too warm, it turns a light colour, very easy to see against the dark blue background.

The drain plug was easy to pull out and to put in, but I did notice that it just doesn't drain all the way, mostly because of the way the bottom is designed. The only way to completely get all the water out is to turn it upside down.

The tub was quite easy to clean as well, I was at first concerned about the grip material. For some reason, I'm very sensitive to the smell of mildew (not allergic, just seem to be able to pick up the smell earlier than a lot of people), and I was afraid that the grip material would be difficult to get dry and would mildew. But no fear -- just washed the whole thing down with dish soap each night and left it to air dry, and there was never a hint of mildew or mold.

Once she could sit up with support, we tried her on the toddler side, but that didn't work very well. It would have been nice if the sloped infant side was adjustable -- she wanted to sit up, but needed more support than the completely vertical toddler seat. It was possible for her to sit on the infant side, but then she had no support behind her back and we had to keep our hands on her all the time.

And once she started sitting without support, I found it was easier to just put her in the big tub. She's on the larger end of normal size (9 pounds at birth, 18 pounds at 5.5 months) and once she started wanting to play in the tub, the baby tub just wasn't big enough. There's no way there's enough room to put her and the bath toys she now wants in there either.

I know First Years says it is an infant/toddler tub, but I honestly don't think that it would be a good tub for a toddler. That said, I know that some little kids are scared of the big tub, and this would be a great alternative in that case. Or if you don't have a tub and don't want to take your baby into the shower. For us, though, it really didn't work once she was able to sit up unsupported.

All in all, if you want to use a baby tub, then this is an excellent choice. And if you get it as a gift, this is a great tub to have! But, barring the circumstances I mentioned above, it might be easier to just bathe baby in the sink when little, get in the tub with baby when a little older, and then just go straight to the big tub on his or her own.

Customer Review: Hey, I really like this tub...for many reasons!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this tub originally for use in my double sink. It didn't fit exactly right, but there was another "plastic ledge" that made it function while using it at the sink. I finally started taking my little darling into the bathroom and kneeling down beside the tub to bathe her in it, as she outgrew the newborn sling.

The "newborn sling" offered all the support I needed for my slippery one from a little before 3 mos of age, until she outgrew it. As for the bar being in her back, that "bar" has always served me as "bottom support" so she wouldn't slip down into a lying position. I have always wanted her to be at a recline at most during her bath. I wouldn't have felt safe bathing her if she laid flat in the sling...

Now with the sling removed since she's outgrown it, the way the tub cradles her and has the support for her bottom so she can recline without sliding under the water is great. She holds herself up with her feet on the very end of the tub just for her own security, plus I never take a hand off of her.

It is extremely easy to fill, use, clean and has a functional compartment for "clean water" so when I stand her up to rinse all the bubbles off, the clean water is handy and I don't need to turn on water and readjust temp, etc.

The "non skid" backing works pretty well considering the slippery soaps I use. It has allowed her to slip from side to side, especially when she's exploring what's around her. But with one hand on her at all times, I just rinse her back and place her back straight in the tub and the skid resistant surface holds...

My daughter loves to splash and kick and bounce and all, and even though it's a little rough to get to her bottom with the ledge that supports her bottom while she's sitting in the tub, she and I have worked out a system and she knows just when to sit forward, lending all her weight over my left arm and she holds onto my arm as I'm holding her from the front. This gives me clear access to efficiently wash her bottom. And when that's done, our routine is such that she has learned to stand up using my arm as support (and I'm holding her with my other arm too at that point) and get her final rinse and "bubbly bath time" is done.

I am a first time mom and I may not be doing it right, but it sure works for us well and she just loves her "bubbly bath time". She's nearly a year old now and it's got a lot of room for growth.

Customer Review: Love our tubby time!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this tub. We have used it for 8 months now. (we have a very small water tank that wouldn't fill the tub with enough warm water, which is being replaced as we speak...)

The net hammock used as a newborn is great. Cradles baby very securely, but still allows baby to remain in water so she's not cold.

The two sided option is great! My daughter used the reclined side with plenty of room for her little feet to kick until she could sit on her own. She is able to soak in enough water to keep her warm and enjoy with no worries of her slipping too far down into the water.

We still use that side durring wash time, although she sits straight up and plays with her ducky now. I find it easier to wash all around her with her sitting up on the reclined side (she's more centered in the tub that way). I then turn her around to the toddler side for play time after. She then has lots of play area in front of her to splash and play with her ducky (which I can't pry from her little hand when she's in there!)

The ducky has a "hot" indicator on the underside of it, but really, no matter how luke-warm the water is, it always says "hot" so we just gage with touch (as you always should) and ducky is just her favorite tub toy!

I use my tub inside the bathroom tub so that she can splash and play without any worries of a mess or of falling over or out.

The padding on the inside is just enough to keep her comfortable and safe from slipping. It is very light and inexpensive.

I was initially dissapointed I did not buy one of the new tubs with a "shower." And, although it's a great idea, when I tried out a girlfriend's tub with the "shower" I didn't find it to be as designed to hold the baby as well. My daughter was 4 months at the time, and was too big for the "net" (her legs had no where to fit) but this other tub had no recline option, just plain basin tub, which was difficult because she could not yet sit, which ended up being very difficult to hold her upright at all times while trying to wash. I was also dissapointed with the "shower" as it was diffucult to keep running and was not more then a few trickles.

Perhaps if they improve upon the "shower" tub design, or make a better "shower" we could have the best of both worlds. Until then, hands down, Sure Comfort Deluxe Newborn-to-Toddler Tub has my vote!

Customer Review: Best One We Tried
Summary: 5 Stars

Our daugther is 6 months old now, and this is the best out of the THREE tubs we have tried so far. Our first tube was the 4 Stage Bath System, which I gave one star in my Amazon review. Our second tub was one I got at [a local store] while I was staying with my family for a couple of months (we left that one there). This third one was the best and I really wish I had bought this one first!

Things I like about this tub:

1. The deep contours are pretty good at holding baby's bottom in place. My daughter doesn't always stay propped up in the reclined position, but the contours in this tub are SO MUCH BETTER than what you get in some other tubs.

If you want to be able to take both hands off your baby while she is in the tub and not have her slide, I suggest using a foam bath pad while bathing. However, the drawback to foam is that it takes up a lot of volume: you end up scooping up water from the other end of the tub when you need to rinse her off.

2. The sitting position is great. Now that my daughter is starting to sit up, I appreciate this feature quite a bit. I put her in the recling position and wash her frontside, then put her in the sitting position and wash her backside. I also let her stay sitting up in the tub after she is clean so she can play with her rubber ducky.

Also, even when she wasn't able to sit up, the extra space built in for the sitting position meant that the tub could hold a bit more water. Other tubs I've seen that only have a reclining position seem to hold less water (such as the 4 Stage Bath System and the Sassy 0-6 month tub at Target).

3. The built-in holder for small bath items. There is a little groove right at the foot of the bath (behind the seat for the sitting positing) that is great for holding soap, washcloths, and other bath supplies. It keeps things handy and I don't have to keep reaching over for the baby shampoo.

4. It really DOES fit securely over a double kitchen sink. I got some water on the kitchen floor when trying out this option, but I was impressed that I could use it in the kitchen. The other two tubs we bought definitely couldn't do this!

Bottom line: best all-around tub we have tried. Intelligently designed and very functional.

Customer Review: We are still using this tub - at 7 mo!
Summary: 5 Stars

I used this tub with my son as soon as his umbilical cord fell off. The infant side was great for him to relax in and get warm. I think he liked being in warm liquid again - similar to being in utero. I used it in the sink (the design of this tub makes it fit perfectly in my side-by-side sink) for the first 3-4 months. He then realized how fun it was to spash his feet and legs and pelted me, and the entire kitchen floor, with water. Thus, we moved it into our bathroom into the large tub, and he is free to splash to his hearts content. The one that I have did not come with the mesh dealy-bopper. Mine has a heat sensitive plug that will turn a lighter color (light teal) if the water is too hot. I find I do not really look at this at all - I would rather rely on my own touch to be safe.

In this tub, I feel safe that my son can play and be safe - not in a large tub of water. We also have one of the little seats that they can sit in with the suction cups, in the large tub, but I have only used that a few times. Many times I'm getting ready for work at the same time he's playing in the tub - so I'm right there. But if he were in the big tub I would be on the floor right by the tub. This one lets me clean the floor, or do my makeup while he is spashing away. Disclaimer - the way our bathroom is I can see him at all times - I DO NOT recommend leaving your child in the tub to do other things.

Note: My son is now 7 months and about 21 lbs. He is crawling now and has started pulling himself up on things. He has started reaching over to the far side of this tub and pulling himself up into a standing position using the edge of this tub. I now monitor him by being right there since he needs to be seated. It is too easy for them to bonk their little heads against the big, hard tub.

This is a wonderful tool. It is safe, because there isn't a lot of water, and you don't have to rely on a suction cup seat to hold them up. It is padded and comfortable too. The only thing you will want to note is that since it is a smaller tub, if the older baby spends any amount of time playing you will probably want to refresh it with warm water as it will cool.
