Baby Products Reviews of Summer Infant Swaddleme Microfleece, Blue, LargeCustomer Review: Great for your little Houdini Summary: 5 Stars
Our little boy started out as a 5.5 lb preemie. At five and a half months he is approx. 18 lbs and 26 inches. Receiving blankets worked fine for swaddling at first, but after he got a bit bigger he would wiggle out of them. I ended up sewing two blankets together and he could soon even wiggle out of that. We call him our 'Little Houdini' because he can get out of anything!
Then, I found this at a Babies 'R Us store and figured it was worth a try. The fabric is very soft, the velcro closures are very strong (believe me!) and if we wrap it tight enough, Little Houdini can't wiggle out! The fabric is still stretchy enough that even when tightly fastened it still provides breathing room. The blanket is also gathered on the shoulders so that it is form fitting and little hands can't get out through the top. The fleece fabric is great because if his diaper leaks, the blanket doesn't feel wet (we also have fleece sheets and jammies for this same reason).
The only thing that could be better is the closure on the leg portion. It leaves a little gap that cold air could get in through and sometimes little feet if there's enough kicking going on. Also, his feet are at the end of the blanket, so maybe for a very long baby this wouldn't be great.
I will be buying more of these so I don't have to do laundry as often and some in a lighter knit fabric for summer (unless Houdini stops playing with his face and pacifier in the middle of the night).
Customer Review: Buy the gingham instead! Summary: 4 Stars
I *LOVE* this product. It's a far better velcro swaddler than the other brands because it uses bigger patches of velcro. In comparison to a blanket, this is much easier to use and provides much more durable swaddles. I'm quite good with a blanket, but by six weeks of age, my son could wriggle out. On the other hand, at three months, he's never wriggled out of the cotton flannel Swaddleme.
However, even in cold weather, the microfleece is too hot. Several times I've felt under the blanket to find my son sweaty. It's even worse when we combine the swaddle with a sling. On the other hand, the cotton knit (solid colors) blankets are too stretchy - my son quickly converts his knit Swaddleme into a toga, leaving both arms flying free. The cotton flannel (gingham prints) has less stretch than the other two fabrics, and plenty enough cover to keep a baby warm at indoor temperatures. It is trickier to find, but worth the search.
The microfleece Swaddleme does, however, make a great non-swaddle blanket on cold days, particularly when the baby is in a front carrier. The velcro is quite versatile.
Customer Review: Not great for defiant babies Summary: 2 Stars
This looked great on Amazon and I read the reviews before buying two of these SwaddleMe fleeces. If you have a wriggly baby, or one that has strong limbs - then don't buy this product. My baby at 2 weeks was pushing his way free. I was also given a couple of other velcro type swaddles, none of them worked. Finally I tried the Miracle Blanket. That is the ONLY swaddle that keeps a baby properly contained. We have only just stopped using it (baby is 4 months) because he has managed to work his fist out to suck and pacify himself each morning, which I believe is a sign that he's ready to graduate to just a sleep sack. Just beware that these swaddles are expensive, so go with one that you know will work whether you have a more passive baby or not - the Miracle Blanket. No buttons, no velcro, just well positioned inner flaps for the arms, a pouch for the legs (which is separate from the arm flaps so you can change the diaper without undoing the entire swaddle) and then much longer flaps that wind around him and tuck in on the edge. They also do well in the washer/dryer. Hope this helps a bit!
Customer Review: Absolutely a must Summary: 5 Stars
Let's face it, you have a newborn and tons of dresses, etc. Do you really need them? Don't think so, as mostly it's a wrap you will be having, etc. Now, the problem with wraps is that invariably the legs "shoot" out, sooner or later, the blankets get tangled and there's a pronounced risk of SIDS due to suffocation. On these aspects, this product is a life-saver. The velcro tags get attached wonderfully and tucks the legs in too. The baby also loves it as there's no creases, etc. which is pitching him/her somewhere. A HIGHLY recommended product.
There are 2 sizes - big and small. They do have a difference. I think the small suffices till 3 or 4 months. The big's not required much since by that time you'll need to figure out if your baby likes/dislikes such wraps, or prefers clothes, etc. etc. Don't try to use the big on a newborn though. It's too big and the newborn will effectively "swim" inside!! Finally, the velcro tabs won't fit and thus you'll have troble attaching them.
Customer Review: This helps my son sleep through the night Summary: 5 Stars
We received the newborn size Swaddle Me as a gift, and at first it was too big. However, my son quickly grew into it and couldn't fall asleep without it. Now he's into the size Large, and I wish they made an Extra Large b/c it's also getting a little small. Pros: It's very easy to use with velcro attachments. You can easily keep him wrapped while taking his feet out and changing his diaper. It's warm, and he needs no additional blankets when using it. Cons: The velcro attachments don't always work that well, esp. the one that keeps the inside wing attached to the legs. Even when it is securely attached, he manages to kick his way out of it, but his arms tend to stay wrapped, which is more important for helping him stay asleep. Now that he's growing longer, I've been putting his legs on top of the bottom portion instead of inside it, just wrapping his arms, and this works great. I LOVE this product. I have four of them.
