Baby Products Reviews of Summer Infant Sure and Secure Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate in WhiteCustomer Review: Not a good fit for my door - but working out great Summary: 4 StarsA couple of issues here.
1) My door is 43" wide, the top is wider than the bottom. Attaching one extention was not enough & attaching both was too much. My fix was to get two 1" bocks of wood to brace the top brackets of the gate on. I painted them, put a long screw through the block into the wall then screwed the pad on. It worked well, but helped to creat problem number two.
2) The bars bend out away from the gate. Being further from the wall created a little space my 15 week old terrier can fit through, in both corners. My fix for this is to cut some plexy glass, drill holes & attach with plastic rip chords to secure the terrier escape route. Which I will do today after work. If my house has not already been shredded by the time I get home.
Seems like a lot to go through, but this is my second gate & I'm tired of messing with it.
Other than the issues listed above, I like the way the gate functions.
Update as of 1/12/10
This gate has worked out great. I haven't bumped it out of place & has done the job of keeping the pup in the kitchen when there is no one to watch him. Great for a puppy, but you might need to be inventive if your door is an in between size.
Customer Review: Must be an EXACT fit Summary: 3 StarsWe bought this gate due to other reviewers high ratings. Let me state , this is a nice gate! However the other posts are right. It has to be an exact match with your measurements. Our opening at the top of the steps was about 38-39". The smaller extension was too small, the pressure screws were almost the entire way out, totally not securing the gate. And the bigger attachment alone was too big. It wouldn't fit. This gate would've been perfect, it's nice and big and tall and sturdy. It's a shame it didn't work out. We had to return it.
Customer Review: Not as sturdy as expected Summary: 3 StarsGood height (we now have quite the climber on our hands) but some of the screws didn't catch the tread; I had to return the second one we purchased for a refund. Not as sturdy as I hoped. First one is fine, just gets a little lose between the doorway every once and a while.
Customer Review: Great! If your door doesn't fall within certain ranges. Summary: 4 StarsUntil now we have used two 24 pressure mounted baby gates (the standard inexpensive ones) on either end of our hallway to keep my one-year-old son (Damian) off the basement steps. Not only are they very steep but they are also open with only one railing (which is out of Damian's reach.) However Damian is tall for his age (most people think he is a two-year-old!) and a climber (he has walked since he was 8 months old) so the low gates are no longer a valid safety option. Shutting the basement door is not an option since the litter box and cat food are down there.
Cue the Summer Infant - Sure & Secure Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate, which we purchased for about $60 at K-Mart. It is a 3 foot tall metal pressure gate that comes with mounting hardware. It is important to mount gates at the top of stairs as pressure gates can slide against walls, creating a big safety issue. The Summer Infant gate has a child-locked walk-thru door too so that you don't have to be an Olympian gymnast to get down the stairs. Since this gate is both a pressure and mounted one is has a short (2 inch) bar across the bottom that you have to step over, but that hasn't been an issue for me. Just use a bit of caution.
This gate should fit any opening between 28 and 47.5 and has two extension panels which allow for this. However if you door frame falls between a 1/2 measurement between each extension piece (32.5 to 33, 37.5 to 38, and 42.5 to 43) it won't fit without a little modification. In other words it will become an enormous pain to install. Our home is old and the basement door frame is slightly crooked. The bottom of the door falls between 32.5 and 33 and therefor just barely too small to fit an extension piece. We fixed this by using an narrow inch thick strip of wood along one side of the door frame, we then used 2 screws (rather then the 1 screws included with the mounting hardware) to mount that side of the gate. Still, if your opening falls in those ranges and you do not have a garage full of miscellaneous wood like me or the handyman skills, do not buy this gate.
As for what I like about the Summer Infant gate. The gate only swings one way, so that you can install it so that it does not swing out over the stairs. The child-lock is well designed but still easy for an adult to operate. The gate itself is metal and seems very sturdy and durable. I don't see myself replacing it or having any parts failing for a long time (knock on wood!) It is also 3 feet tall which is daunting for Damian but not so overwhelming that my cat cannot jump over it. (If you have a disable, older or obese cat I can see where it's height might have an issue for the stairs.) With a permanent gate at the top of the stairs I no longer have to step over the two shorter gates in the hallway too, and Damian enjoys doing the house loop now as well!
Would I recommend the gate? I added another one to my wishlist the outdoor deck stairs so I obviously like it, but if your child is average height and not a climber, it is probably not necessary. There are cheaper shorter mounted gates out there. However if you have a toddler who is a climber and tall for his or her age, as well as a set of dangerous stairs, then I would go as far to say a tall gate is not only useful, but necessary. I think the Summer Infant - Sure & Secure Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate fits the bill fantastically well.
Customer Review: Not what I was hoping it was Summary: 3 Stars!. buy the Summer Infant Extra Tall Decorative Walk-Thru Gate model number: 07600.
It is a better gate. The latch on this one does not work as well.
I have three of the 07600 models. I got this one on sale. Not very happy with it.
They use the same pressure system. A little tricky to get just right.
1 evenly secure the bottom nice and tight.
2 level the latch side.
3 adjust the hinge side.
if its to loose kids can knock it open. My son did this by laying on his back and kicking it when he was 23months old. A I'm not ready for bed 11:30 at night thing. After properly adjusting it we have had no problems.
It is brown but you will be much happier with the decorative gate. It just works better.
