Baby Products Reviews of Summer Infant Sure and Secure Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate, White

Customer Review: Good Gate, bad extra extension
Summary: 4 Stars

I just installed the gate today and it seems pretty sturdy. The installation was pretty easy, it opens smoothly, closes itself as advertised, etc.

I had a 52.5" opening, so I ordered a second 10" extension from the Summer Infant website. Their website says the extension is compatible with model number 06070, Extra Tall Walk Thru Baby Gate. It also notes that it is NOT compatible with model 06070C. The Summer Infant website, as well as all the websites that carry this model (I checked them all), only list Model 06070. I assumed the 06070C model must be discontinued or something. When my package arrived in the mail, the container of course said Model 06070C, and as advertised the extension pins did not line up with the gate. I am not sure if the blame lies with Amazon and all the sellers (for not fully labeling the product online), or with Summer Infant (for having a poor labeling system/interoperability).

I did discover a work around. You can remove the plastic piece in the top corner of the gate (either side will work) that holds the pin, flip it over, and reinsert. The alignment is not perfect, but it works (the extension does not sit flush on the floor with the rest of the gate however). I am just using the gate to block a passageway; I would not recommend this work around for stairs.

Customer Review: Great gate, great price, no drilling
Summary: 5 Stars

We've had this gate for over a year and I'm about to buy a second one to keep our daughter in her room after the transition to the big-girl bed. This is a great gate at a great price. Anyone who has problems with it not closing properly didn't install it correctly. We have used it at the top of the stairs for a year. The opening is wide and uneven (we actually have to angle the gate about an inch from one side to the other)...and this gate still works great. It also didn't require any extra extensions from what is included in the box. The pressure mounting system has only had to be adjusted a couple of times over the year and has never actually "come loose" it just needed a little adjustment to keep the gate lined up. I love the fact that I didn't have to drill into my banisters and walls to mount this gate. We have a different gate at the top of the stairs leading down to our basement....one of the free swinging gates.....in hind-sight I wish we had put one of these there as well. You do have to step over a bar to go through the gate....but we've never tripped on it and neither has our daughter. We make a big deal about being careful on the stairs and mommy going first through the gate. I also love that this gate is tall enough that my daughter can't climb over it.

Customer Review: Love this gate!!
Summary: 5 Stars

We purchased this gate by default but ended up loving it. We needed a gate wide enough to close off a hallway (both bathroom and basement stairs are behind it) and it was one of the few that would adjust wide enough. I origionally wanted a "hands free" gate but soon found out from friends that with time the toddlers weight and creativity would enable them to open it. My son is 25 months now, and still is unable to breach the security of this gate. We chose not to drill holes in the wall to secure the cups & help hold the gate in alignment, so we do need to adjust the "swing" about every 2 months. Does not seem to be a problem for us nor does the one handed opening. The reviews about "slamming" the gate never even crossed my mind, we walk through our gate-not run and thus it closes slower. I have also tried to make sure my child is used to noise during sleep from the start (lets face it, the world can't always be quiet just because the baby is sleeping). I love this gate and the fact that there is no place for my child to get a "foot hold" and climb is extra helpful, the height makes me feel more confident that he will not try to climb over and end up falling on his head. I do reccomend putting opening instrutions on the top for when company comes to visit.

Customer Review: Keeps the cats out!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am the world's most worrisome new mommy and when my pediatrician told me to put one of those tents over my babies crib to keep our cats out, I wanted to heed his advice. However, the idea of putting a tent over my little one did not appeal to me at all! Honestly, I would rather get rid of the cats then make my baby sleep that way. Another all turnative that I had heard about was to put a screen door on the baby's room - however, my husband spent countless hours redoing the room, including painting and installing a new door, so I knew he would not want to put up a screen - and I thought that might not look that great in the house anyway. So a friend asked if a baby gate would work. I knew that this extra tall gate would probably be the only one that would work - if any of them would work at all. I am happy to report that after about 2 months of use the cats have not been able to climb over this gate. One of my cats is older, but the other one is a very active, "crazy", curious 3 year old cat. Now, the gate does "pop loose" out of the door frame if I push into too hard and it has left slight marks on my door facing, but I am just really pleased that the cats cannot go into the baby's room while he is small!

Customer Review: Not bad for the first doorway gate we tried!
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay, so this was delivered quickly, and it took me less than 10 minutes to set up. At first I overtightened it, and it wouldn't shut, so I loosened it and everything was fine. I decided to forgo the padded discs that you can screw into the wall to keep the gate in place, because I thought my daughter wouldn't be strong enough to dislodge it.

WRONG.

After about two weeks of pretty much leaving it alone, she decided she wanted to come into the kitchen, and she wanted to do it NOW. So she gave the gate two or three really good yanks, and the bottom came loose, followed by the top, and the whole thing needed to be put back up.

So this time I marked where I wanted to screw in the padded discs, because not having a gate at all is NOT an option (we occasionally need to put down mousetraps, and don't want her to get to them and hurt herself). Marking and installing the discs took less than five minutes, and this time around, installation was a snap. The gate has stayed in place for about two months now. She can yank on it all she wants, it isn't going anywhere.

I'm much more impressed with this gate than I was with the Summer Infant play yard. I would recommend this to other parents.
