Baby Products Reviews of Summer Infant Sure and Secure Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate, WhiteCustomer Review: Great gate, extra tall, easy to install Summary: 5 Stars
If installed correctly this gate will work just perfect.
The gate close behind us automatically with no problem. I did need to adjust it so that this would work, since at first I had it too tight. Its a bit loud though, so I usually close it with my assistance so I get a quiet close when the baby is sleeping. This is a very tall gate and no 2 or 3 year olds are going to be able to scale it very easily. Its the tallest one I could find.
The locking mechanism is very secure and not easy for even an advanced toddler to work since the release button is very high for them to reach. But it is easy for an adult to open one handed.
I was able to install the gate in the outer door frame, so I can still close the bedroom door even with the gate installed. I did not need to use any expansions that were included. I had it installed in less than a half hour and with no curse words, so to me that says alot for its easy installation. Especially since I just glanced over the directions and did the rest myself.
TIP: Make sure to use the end caps that secure the pressure mounted rings and make sure to screw these in. I first installed the gate and then loosened the top, put the end caps on the ends, and then pushed the pressure mount with attached end cap on the wall. I repeated this for all the caps. Then I removed the gate and secured the caps with the screws since the sticky backing is just for aligning these easier. Then I reinstalled the gate and it aligned just perfect since I did it this way. It is very secure this way. You could just use the pressure mounts alone, but I like the added security of the end caps securing in place the pressure mounts.
Customer Review: Does its job Summary: 3 Stars
We have a baby and two errant dogs. The doggies live in the kitchen unless invited into other parts of the house and we have had issues with the dogs busting through a wall-mounted accordion gate that we had been using. We have been coming home from work to find our poochies watching TV and eating bon bons and it HAD to stop!
I purchased this gate because it's tall-the dogs are terriers and if they can't get through the gate their next step is to jump over it. I also selected it because of the included extensions. I did not want the hassle or extra expense of having to find extensions if the actual gate did not fit our doorway.
It does it's job, but there are some things I don't like about this gate:
1. It slams when you go through it, but it may or may not close. Typically it closes IF you are coming back through with an armload of stuff and won't have a free hand to open it.
2. It really isn't very attractive. Oh, it is better than those ugly traditional baby gates, but it just doesn't blend in to our decor well.
3. I need both hands to open it when I do have to actually open it-hopefully it will keep baby on her side when she's big enough but it is a hassle to me, especially with arms full of laundry.
4. There is a piece on the latch that sticks out that I am just waiting for my clothes to get hung on and rip as I pass through the gate.
All of that said, it was easy to install and the poochies tried but were unable to bust through this gate, so it does to it's job. If you have a major pet-related containment issue and are beyond aesthetics, I would recommend this gate.
Customer Review: Please beware - sometimes unusable, ALWAYS unsafe!! Summary: 1 Stars
I purchased this gate locally to install at the bottom of my main floor staircase. (My 19-month-old likes to climb at least halfway up and then tumble back down!)
First problem: The opening is just about 42 1/2", and like one previous reviewer mentioned, the screw-in supporting pegs do not protrude nearly far enough. I can get it to where it holds for a while, and then one side pops out. However, with the additional 5-inch extension, the gate can't quite be squeezed in. 42 1/2" is a fairly standard doorway opening, so if I was going to recommend this product (which I emphatically do not), I would say measure and make sure yours is at least one inch narrower or wider.
Second problem: The latch mechanism is ridiculously frail. Nearly all the other reviewers awarding 1 star agree: a little bit of jiggling and the gate's safety features are defeated! And it's worse when just the top latch opens but gravity holds the bottom post in, because the wedge that results could easily entrap a small head. I didn't let my little one try, but I'm certain he could wrench it open (or even off the wall) on the first try. Just tighten it farther, you suggest? Then the gate won't open at all.
Please do not take a risk on this product...the life of your precious child may be at stake.
P.S. As noted in another review, it is not a true hardware-mounting gate. There are mountable end cups, but the gate is still held in between those by mere tension. Not suitable for the top of stairs, despite claims on the packaging!!
Customer Review: Not great, not bad Summary: 3 Stars
The good news is that the gate arrived undamaged and was in its intended position in about 15 minutes. It is simple to install and while others seemed to struggle with it, I didn't find it very challenging. For openings of 29-31, 34-36, 39-41 and 44-46, this gate should work pretty well. Beyond those ranges, the gate pretty much operates at the end range of the tension bolts and perhaps that is why previous reviewers have voiced some concerns about it not fitting snugly for their door. When square, the door closes easily. I'm using a bungee cord to keep it open. It is sturdy.
The bad news is that the company has no pride in their product. Mine, like other reviewers have noted, was dirty AND rusty. Had I bought this at Target, it would have gone back in an instant as it is inexcusable. The black dust covering it came off with a wet sponge. I couldn't find anything to take out the rust. And I'm not just talking about a little rust. There are at least 20 splotches of rust on this gate. Unfortunately, I bought it through Amazon so I would have to cart my behind to UPS, pay for shipping and then buy something else and perhaps pay for that shipping, too. As my dogs are old and I'm not likely going to use it very long, I'm just going to keep it and be done with it. That being said, I'd buy something else if I could do it over again. I only bought this one b/c I had a $50 gift certificate and it only cost me another $10 out of pocket.
Customer Review: Love the gate. Summary: 5 Stars
We've had this gate for almost a year now. It sits at the bottom of the stairs, therefore, the bar at the bottom isn't a problem. The height is great so that you don't have to lean down to open it. You simply have to raise the bar a bit and it opens. Strange as it may sound, I am able to do this hands free so long as I'm barefoot... I can use my toes to lift the door up just enough for it to open :-).
I love the fact that the gate self closes. This is very handy for when you have your hands full. The only problem we have had with the gate is when the gate does self close, sometimes it closes hard enough to pop the spring out of the latch on the swinging door so that it won't close. We have managed to get around this by taping the latch onto the door so that it never comes off and the spring stays in.
This gate also keeps our dogs downstairs. We have had much success with this gate. We've never had a problem with it becoming unaligned, either. Perhaps we have it in tighter than other people do. Oh, and as far as it being noisy? Please... it makes a closing sound if you let it slam but you have control over that.
I highly recommend this gate! We're having trouble now, however, finding a gate for the top of the stairs. I'm not sure if this gate is a good idea for the top since it poses a potential tripping hazard.
