I bought this gate as a barrier to keep our new puppy out of the kids playroom. In my mind, for what I needed it to do, it does. From reading the reviews, I needed a gate my 4 and 6 year olds could learn to open and they can, but still have a little difficulty. So if you want it as a child barrier, it would also work well. If you don't show them how to open it, it would take them a while to figure it out. We had to use the smaller extension, but it still seems very sturdy. I also needed a gate that was taller than the normal gate and this height is great. Even when our puppy gets bigger, she won't be able to jump over it but I didn't want it too tall that the kids wouldn't be able to reach the handle. Overall, I recommend this gate for both pet and child barriers.Customer Review: Best gate we have

We have a number of different gates around our house and this is our favorite. We needed a pressure gate between our kitchen and the kids' play area. After reading some of the other reviews here, I was a bit hesitant, but decided to try it out. I'm glad I did. It was a snap to install and is solid. We love that the door closes itself. I had to use a little WD40 to eliminate a squeak, but it works like a charm. The latch is easy to work with one hand, and the height makes it easier than other gates we have.
Downsides:
1. The bar at the bottom sticks up a little more than I'd like, but we haven't tripped yet (knock on wood.)
2. Shouldn't use a pressure gate at the top of stairs.
All in all it's worth the money.

I bought this gate for my medium sized dog with a propensity to jump over all the lower gates. It worked great for awhile, but as my dog would jump and put his paws on the gate, it would move. I had to tighten the gate every other day just so it wouldn't fall down (which it would sometimes when I didn't). If it wasn't just right, it wouldn't close by itself, which meant my dog would get through. Also after awhile of it moving bit by bit, it put small holes in both sides of the wall. After awhile one of the sodered points just broke. I fixed it with mighty putty for awhile, but eventually it went into the trash. Not worth the money it cost. Would never consider it safe for the top of the stairs. Wouldn't even use it around my baby boy now that we're babyproofing.Customer Review: I like it.

This gate is easy to install and simple to operate once you get the hang of how it works. My son is one and half years old and has a tendency to rush gates (he's broken two already...) and so far, this one's holding up. I would not recommend anyone use it at the top of stairs because it doesn't have an installation kit, but for hallways and at the bottom of the stairs it works really well. It swings closed on its own and is pretty loud if you let it slam shut... we use ours in the kitchen so it doesn't wake the babies up- however, if you were to use it in a hallway near where your kids are sleeping, it might be loud enough to disturb their sleep.
All in all, it's a really good deal and I would highly recommend this product.

I 1st purchased the Extra tall gate designed for stair by the same company as this one... I returned It QUICK!!! This gate is much better for us! The mounting was rather easy ... The fit is great.. I like the auto close... I will have to get used to the way it opens( practice makes perfect)... The height is PERFECT!! Dogs stay out Baby stays in!!! We just put it up tonight and before we were done we only had the top bar holding on to the wall and it still stayed up when my 1 year old leaned on it ( I wouldnt recommend continued use like that tho). I like this gate alot so far!! Good product to purchase....OH 1 thing its not 48" max. it 47.5" so if you need exctly 48" you might need to slip a piece of wood or something it the extra space!
