Customer Review: Perfect for my son's captain's bed

After much research looking at products in stores, and reading reviews on Amazon and other sites, I settled on this item for my 3-year old's captain's bed. Like other reviewers commented, many of the bedrails out there state that you need a boxspring to use - although technically you do need something flat to lie under this item, I got around that problem by placing a flat piece of plywood on top of the wood slats that his mattress sits on. This supports the "arms" of the bedrail, and the weight of the mattress basically holds in in place quite nicely (even without the included mattress straps).
As far as durability, my son is not easy on anything, and it has managed to hold up to his abuse (leaning against, occasional climbing, etc). It is also much taller than any of the others I looked at, so I feel secure that it will keep him from falling out of bed. The color is also nice, and I have gotten a lot of compliments on it.
The only complaint I have is that the fabric that is wrapped around the frame was so tight that it took some serious pulling to get the mechanisms to "lock in" and prevent it from collapsing when first setting it up. Also, since I can't really fold down the sides (this has more to do with the captain's bed frame being higher than the bottom of the unit), changing sheets is a serious workout!
I would highly recommend this item to anyone - especially for use with a captain's bed as described.
