Customer Review: Dangerous, easy for any mobile baby to open

Do not purchase if this gate is meant to keep children safe from stairs! We purchased the gate initially to keep our dogs in the main levels of our house. For that, the gates are perfect. They are a little higher, so my very agile dog cannot jump over them if placed at the top of the stairs (he can still jump over them if they are at the bottom of the stairs, or if the gates are on a level area). For that, they are great, pretty, they match our home perfectly. When our 8 month old started getting really mobile, crawling everywhere and pulling himself up on things, these gates blocking off the stairs became unsafe. He pulls himself up on the gates and shakes the bars. It just takes a slight jiggle up, like maybe a couple of centimeters, to unlatch the gate. You don't have to use the latch at the top of the gate to open, just lift it a little. My son has opened the gate twice within the last month. It's also hard to tell if the gate has latched, sometimes the bottom part catches like it's supposed to, but the top doesn't and vice versa. So my husband and I have developed OCD about it; we shake the gates everytime we walk by them while the baby is out, to make sure they are latched so he doesn't fall down the stairs. I've emailed Summer Infant, and they never replied. I don't plan on buying anything from that company again, just out of principle.
