I bought this product because my 2 year old daughter had many many ear infections over the winter. Any time she caught a sniffle it would turn into an ear infection. Sometimes I would bring her in to see the Dr too early, and because they did not see an infection yet, they would not treat. Then I would end up bringing her back 2 days later. With this product I was able to bring her in at just the right time. I did let the NP know that I bought one of these, she kind of rolled her eyes, and warned me not to overeact if I see redness, as the ear drum can be red and inflamed if the baby is crying. But she did help by letting me know that i am looking for a small cone of light to be reflected on the ear drum and that you have to get the angle just right. She was right, the illustrated book that comes with this is helpful, but I did have the angle slightly wrong. Make sure you see that small cone of light.
All in all this product saved me some trips. Cara did get tubes in and we have not had any ear infections since. The Dr that did her surgery let me look in her ear through his otoscope and i am glad he did, because the tube looks alittle different that the picture in the book.
I do not have any problems with the pieces falling off as some others complained of. And this is definitely not Dr-quality, but I have become quite confident in my ability to detect an ear infection!
