Baby Products Reviews of Summer Infant Deluxe Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor with 2.5" Screen, BlueCustomer Review: What a stress reliever!! Summary: 5 Stars
This monitor has taken such a load off my mind! I had been toying with the idea of a video monitor for some time and finally decided to get one just before a big reunion held at my house. I am so glad I made the investment!
When my 5 1/2 month old daughter was napping I could close her door to keep out all of the noise and still see her sleeping soundly. The portability is great! I was able to take it all around my house and out in the back yard with no problems.
I'm usually pretty stingy with five star ratings, but this product deserves it because:
- Portability - Great to clip on your pocket and go.
- Reception - No problems, clear sound and picture.
- Great Night Vision - We could see our little one clearly with only a small nightlight in her room.
- Holds Charge - I used it all day and night checking the video regularly with no problems. And when the charge does run low, the sound still works well. You just plug in the adapter and the video returns to normal.
If you are a bit of a worry-wart like me, I recommend investing in this product now! If I had done so earlier I would have been saved 5 1/2 months of peeking in on my little one.
Customer Review: Video Monitor, $$; Wife's Happiness, Priceless Summary: 5 Stars
My wife and I have a three year old and a now seven month old. When our second was born, we knew he'd be downstairs, a entire floor away from his parents. As a dad who learned a few lessons the first time around, I had no problem shelling out the coin necessary to put my wife's mind at ease.
So, was it worth it? Absolutely. The product has performed without a single hiccup. We get great reception, the video is so bright the monitor will wake me up at night when my wife is "peaking" on our son. Resolution is very good, the thermal sensor works well, and the audio almost works too well.
A tip for use, we originally mounted it about 2 feet above the base of the matress, on the crib. I recently increased the distance to about 4 feet using a broom (my son has learned he can grab the camera). This gives us a much better view of the crib. The point is, test out positioning, and don't be afraid to push the limits of the camera, it can take it.
As far as durability, my wife has dropped the handheld monitor too many times to count. And despite my wincing, it still operates flawlessly.
As my title suggests, this is a very, very worthy investment!
Customer Review: Good, but didn't last that long Summary: 3 Stars
After much searching, my hubby bought this monitor shortly before our son was born 2 years ago. Now, expecting #2, we're going to have to get another one -- I would have thought that for this price it would last through 2 kids, but no. Problems are all with the handheld unit (which travels around the house with you and thus one would think would be pretty sturdy). The battery cover and kickstand are a little worse for the wear but that's not the dealbreaker -- the volume control has gone completely caput. By this time it really has only two settings -- off and intolerably loud. Intolerably loud is sufficient when we're in the kitchen or even watching TV -- put it on the other side of the room and you eventually learn to ignore the static/background noise, but when you're doing something more quiet -- LIKE SLEEPING -- you just have to turn it off, making the entire point of having a monitor rather moot.
The volume problem happened gradually over the course of a year or so -- the product worked great for a year and we were very happy -- but eventually the volume showed some problems, then you'd have to jiggle it and work the knob carefully, then no amount of jiggling helped. SIGH.
Customer Review: Not worth the money Summary: 2 Stars
We had the $149 Saftey 1st one, 1st model - after 6 months the Night vision went, got another, This one had little less static than the first. A friend had the Summer (this model) I got it confused with the Mobicam, but once at the store said let me try it. Of course problems from the start. Color, yeah right, mine seems to be only 4 colors, almost no diff from the night vision. Running a wireless household helped the reception on the saftey 1st but this one does NOT supress interferrance like the product says. I have to lean the antenna against my Wireless G card to kill the interferrence when it's next to me or ly it down on it's side and their is less zapping noise. Today this one is going back and I will try the Mobicam from Target, yet I really hate their crappy return policy. It would be so nice if babiesrus would carry the mobicam.
The only positive this about this one was it was smaller so it didn't take up the whole nightstand, and my wife loved the fact she didn't have to sleep with her glasses on anymore, she just leaned over grabbed the unit and out it in front of her face to see what this little one was up to.
Good Luck with your choice.
Customer Review: Strike Four! Summary: 1 Stars
For 6 years we used a Safety 1st brand video monitor and were pleased with it. When we saw Summer's version, smaller, sleeker, and more portable, we hesitated at the price, but knew from past experience it was a valuable tool. I wish now we would have picked a brand other than Summer.
1. The video takes a good 10 minutes to go from fuzzy to clear.
2. The video and audio come through on different channels. We still have to use a separate monitor for audio if we use the Summer for video. I contacted the company and did not receive a response.
3. The piece of plastic to hold the receiver vertical is weak and easily broke.
4. When not plugged in the receiver shuts off the video after 3 minutes. The company did not respond to this problem either, but I see now from their website they consider this a "feature". As a busy mom I have better things to do with my baby's naptime than to hit a button every 3 minutes. Very annoying.
Having spent so much money on the monitor, I'm extremely disappointed in both the product and the company's lack of support.
