With our first child we bought the "Summer Infant Day & Night Video Monitor" that we enjoyed having and couldn't live without. My husband convinced me to get this portable monitor for our second child. I objected because of the price but after using it I had to tell him "your right, honey". I love having a portable monitor. It also turns out that the camera for the other monitor works with the portable monitor (although it's in black and white) so now I can flip a switch and monitor both kids. I gave it a four stars only because the sound part of the monitor stinks, it has a lot of static sound, but I knew this in advance b/c it's the same with the other monitor. (We actually use the SONY NTM-910Y Baby Monitor for sound b/c it has a voice activation setting that rocks, we also bought a second one for our second child). Also, I agree with other reviews about the color. There has to be a lot of light in the room for the monitor to show in color. Personally I would have liked it to be in black and white and paid less b/c most of the time the picture is in black and white. When it is in color it doesn't really make much difference to me. Also, I would definitely choose the bigger 2.5 inch screen over the smaller screen. I don't think I would be as happy with the monitor if the screen was smaller.Customer Review: Video great, reception problems not so great

There is a lot of upside to this monitor. The infrared video is great when the kid wakes up at night and is running around in the crib and you want to know what she is up to. I was surprised how well it works in a very dim room. It even has some a/v out jacks, so you can plug it into your TV, videocam, etc. The people complaining about the video quality in other reviews seem to have unrealistic expectations for the product, perhaps created by the packaging.
The reception (on 900 MHz freq., 2 channels) is very inconsistent. It will be fine and then when someone walks the past the monitor it will lose track of the signal and be completely unable to regain it. I don't know if this is a problem with their signal processing or just a poor antenna set up, but I have been looking into ways to increase the transmission power. The monitor tends to run a little hot when the video is on, which may also be a factor in reception. I wonder if the addition of an external antenna on the transmitter would help?
Overall, I think they should have taken the crowded nature of the 900MHz spectrum into account and offered more channels, or more error correction in the system. The plus on this one is the portable video monitor, it's really great and a somewhat unique feature.

Like some of the other reviews, this monitor does not have perfect picture quality but it does have good quality even at night time. We have not had a problem with reception even when we are using our cordless phones. One thing I do not like is that when it is in portable mode the picture only stays on for about a minute then it goes into a standby mode where the screen is blank but you still have sound. If you want to see the picture you hit the top snooze button for a quick look. If it is plugged into the wall the sound and picture stay on which is how I use it at night time. Customer service told me that they do that in order to save the battery life when in portable mode. I would like for the picture to stay on all the time in portable mode, but that might not be a big issue for someone else. Also the stand that it comes with (it pops in and out) is made cheaply and one side of mine already broke. I can still use the stand using the other side that did not break, but I was disapointed that it broke after only using it a couple times. Otherwise, this is a great monitor to have if you want to be able to see your child without having to go in their room over every sound they make. This is the first review I have ever made time to write. I am writing this because this product is the best thing we have spent our money on. We are in the process of moving our 11 week old son from the bassinet in his Pack & Play (which is in our room) into his crib in his nursery at the other end of the house. I am a first time mom and a compulsive worrier and my son has reflux and colic so I am worried how the transition will go. This monitor has given me piece of mind that is priceless. Right now we put it on the changing table of his Pack & Play and can see every movement he makes. Next week when we move him to the nursery we can mount the camera on the wall or set it on his dresser. Both the camera unit and the viewer have A/C adapters so they can plug into the wall. This unit also comes with a cable that allows you to broadcast on your TV. The first night we had the unit my husband hooked it up to the TV in the living room and we watched our son go to sleep instead of the ball game. This is a great feature because the viewing screen on the unit is very small. The night vision is perfect and the only interference we have had was when the microwave is on. This is my fourth monitor. The first one I bought was a mobi one and it was AWFUL. I think the fact that it was 2.4ghz was why it didn't work well in our house. I love the big screen in comparison to the mobi one. I didn't like the bulkiness of the other monitors where it was the size of a small TV. It helps that the monitor is really portable. I bought a second camera when my second child was born and found that it worked great as well. I wish they could offer dual scanning where it would automatically scan each room. About 9 months after I bought it the monitor sound gave out on me. I called Summer Infant and they offered to replace it, however, I was required to send back the old one first. When I told them I could not go that long w/o a monitor b/c I have two children I am watching they offerred to take my credit card as a deposit and immediately send another monitor out provided I returned the damaged one as soon as I got the new one. It all worked out well. I have been absolutely pleased with this monitor and would recommend it to anyone! I also found when my sound on the monitor went out that it was much better than the fisher price sound monitor that I had to use as a backup. Excellent product.
