Baby Products Reviews of Summer Infant Deluxe Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor with 2.5" Screen, BlueCustomer Review: Great product but picture a bit blurry Summary: 4 Stars
We have the black and white large monitor also and the picture quality from the black and white camera is much clearer than the color camera. Color samera picture looks like there is some oil on the lens or something - not necessarily grainy, just smudged looking. I have returned it for a new one to see if the color one I had was defective. I didn't see why the picture quality would differ. We'll see! Also, you never get much color so don't' buy it for that. We didn't care about the color as much as the size/portability of the monitor. Also, you can easily plug it into the TV if you want the picture on the TV instead of the monitor. Very cool idea.
But overall we love these monitors. The black and white one is crystal clear, excellent sound, and good reception too. You do have to move the monitor around sometimes if something else interferes with it but this has been a very minor problem in our house. Also, if you walk in the monitor and camera path it sometimes gets static. Again, rarely a problem. And ours sits right near our phones, computers, etc.
We have two monitors and can switch the A and B channels to see each of the kids rooms which is so convenient. Definitely a "can't live without it" item for our family. Although the regular black and white one is good enough if you don't care about portability/counter space.
Also, we have had a great experience with Summer Infant customer service. After having the black and white monitor for a long time we noticed a low pitched hum and they sent us a replacement very quickly, no problem.
Customer Review: A must-have for parents! Summary: 5 Stars
We bought this monitor almost 2 years ago (our daughter is now 22 months) without ever having tried a regular sound-only monitor. I can't even imagine NOT being able to see her. The video aspect is so helpful -- when she's crying in her crib before a nap or bedtime, we can watch her & make sure that she's ok. That alone is invaluable, especially for new and/or nervous-nellie parents (yes, that's us).
Last year, she used to fall asleep sitting up with her head against the crib rails. When I saw on the monitor that she was still for a while, I'd go up & lay her down so she could sleep comfortably. I wouldn't have been able to do that with a sound-only monitor.
As for this monitor's quality, it's been great. The picture is very clear (we have a wireless network, too), and we only experience minor static now & then. Repositioning the monitor (and sometimes the monitor's cord, if it's plugged in) usually helps. The battery stopped holding a charge after a year or so of HEAVY use, so I just ordered another battery, & it's been perfect since then.
We have another baby due next month, and I'll be ordering a 2nd monitor/camera set for the new baby's bedroom. We could have opted to just order another monitor & set it to use the other channel (A or B), but that would mean that you can only watch one child at a time. We'd like to see and hear both children at all times at night.
I HIGHLY recommend this monitor -- it's one of my top 5 baby items!
Customer Review: Best of the Video Monitors I've tried Summary: 4 Stars
I definitely wanted a video monitor, because my bedroom is upstairs and the baby is downstairs. Having a video monitor is great because you can check if the baby's awake or just squawking in his sleep before you go all the way in there. I've tried three: this one, the Mobi Cam, and the new Safety First version. Both the other two got constant static that caused the picture to flicker and a clicking sound to come through on the audio. This one is USUALLY static free, accept for a periodic BLARE, usually in the middle of the night. It's pretty frustating, but I've now found a low enough volume level whereby the static won't scare me out of bed when it hits but I can still hear if my son cries.
As for the other features, the "color" is pretty poor, but the night vision works fairly well. It's very nice that it's portable, and that you don't HAVE to mount the camera--you can place it on a flat surface and angle it to see. I also like that when it's unplugged, the video shuts off after a couple minutes so it doesn't drain your battery. Then you can pop it back on (or off) with the touch of a big button on top. When it's plugged in, the video will stay on all night, but I feel like it starts to get warm when I leave the picture on too long. I generally shut it off until he makes noise, then I turn on the picture to see what's going on down there.
Since I've tried THREE video monitors, and this worked the best in my house, I thought I'd pass the research along.
Customer Review: Peace of Mind! Summary: 5 Stars
My 9 month old daughter has never been much of a sleeper. She wakes very easily and is very active the moment she wakes up. With the bedrooms on the second floor I am now able to watch her from our first floor using this monitor and know she is safe. This monitor has also been wonderful when traveling to see relatives. I am now able to relax and enjoy our visits with the ability to watch our little darling sleep soundly.
The image is clear if the camera is within 4 or 5 feet and even when we have placed the camera 10 feet or more away, it is grainy but we can still see her tiny little body enough to know she is safe. The wireless video with night vision definitely met and surpassed my expectations. The other plus to this unit is that you can buy an additional camera and switch between the two cameras using the two channels available on the handheld monitor. I definitely plan on doing this when we have our second child. The only annoyance I have experienced with this monitor, compared to my regular sony audio monitor, is that I get more interference with this one.
Overall I would recommend this monitor to anyone who is looking for a video monitor. I was nervous spending this much money without first seeing the quality of the picture, but I am pleased to say it has been worth every penny. Our friends and family are always so amazed by this when we show it to them. My husband and I just love being able to see our precious girl at any time and know she is safe.
Customer Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the "new" monitor at Babies R Us and I am pretty impressed. I guess there was another that had picture problems so they pulled them from the shelves and are now selling a white and silver one (same brand). We have 2 other systems at our house, one is Radio Shack brand and another I purchased at Kmart. They are both on a 2.4GHZ system. I live in a duplex, and my downstairs neighbor bought a chordless phone with dual receivers and it is also on a 2.4GHZ range. We could not see the picture AT ALL. It was jumping all over the place and had about 15 lines that ran through the picture. I also had to change my computers wireless network because of their phones. This monitor is just like all the others, the difference is, you get a little bit of color and most of the chordless phones and wireless networking systems are on a 2.4GHZ and higher frequency so the 900MHZ comes in extremely handy. It is not digital quality picture but what do you want for a chordless monitor? It is equivalent to a television with rabbit ears just the same as all my other 2.4 monitors. I am pretty impressed with it's portability and I would reccomend this over all that I have tried before. I also love the feature that the picture shuts off after 3 minutes to save on the battery. I plan to take this camping and putting the camera in my children's tent and having the monitor in our tent. It's going to be a lot more convenient than carrying around the big clunky monitor that you have to plug in.
