Baby Products Reviews of Summer Infant Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor with 1.8" Screen - SilverCustomer Review: Some static but otherwise excellent product... Summary: 4 Stars
The picture clarity on this monitor is superb! And as a first time parent, I have to say I was skeptical that we needed such an expensive monitor. My husband talked me into it (as he has all of our more lavish baby items), and I am SO glad that he did. We own a two-story house, so it helps to peek at my daughter via the monitor before seeing if I really need to run upstairs to get her. It is also nice to just take a look at her when she's sleeping -- she's so precious, and I'm sure all parents would love it for that feature alone.
I love that the video feature automatically shuts off when you are not plugged in -- this preserves the battery. All you need to do to start it again is push a button. That way you can still hear the baby and use the video feature at your whim.
The night vision is the best. We can clearly see every feature on our baby at night. There is a contrast control on the side of the handheld monitor to help with light distribution -- that way, if you put the baby to bed when it is still light outside, you can adjust as the sun goes down if you need to.
The only reason this product gets 4 stars is because we do get quite a bit of static. We've tried disabling our wireless internet, but that does't always help. But it's not enough of a bother to make us dislike the product. The pros outweigh the cons. Good product!
Customer Review: Best monitor ever.....Definitely worth the money Summary: 5 Stars
I was a little hesitant at first about buying the monitor because I was reading some of the reviews about people saying it does not even look like its in color and people getting feedback or just static and fuzz. Also other people were stating problems with their wireless internet routers being a problem as well.
All I have to say is that they are completely wrong. If you buy this system then you should do the research first and make sure your cordless phone and router are not of the same frequency. Obviously you will get all the problems listed above. I have this monitor and it is crystal clear in color and crystal clear at night. I was also a little worried about how far it would work since I am in a basement. Well it worked crystal clear while I was in my backyard bbq'ing with my friends while my son was sound asleep in his bed. I was able to keep an eye on him anywhere in the house and on my property. Summer was not kidding when they said 300ft distance. If you do the research and do not have the same frequency then you will not be dissapointed.
The only thing I wish that I did was get the new 2.5 inch screen. I was not aware it was out already. Hope this helps. I will never get another monitor. All I have to do now is get another camera. That is the only other downfall is that you only get 1 Review: Boo Summary: 2 Stars
Boo- don't go with this unit. In my opinion, when you spend this much on a product, it should at least last as long as you need it to. Like while your children are little enough to want to monitor them. I thought I would be able to use this for my 2nd child, but no such luck. I have a stereo that lasted 30 years and this monitor's volume started to malfunction after only about a year.
If you call they tell you to blow air into the volume dial opening. ???? What? Because dust gets in there. How bizarre. Just as other reviewers mention, you can have a refurbished model for 80 bucks (no thank you.) The battery stops charging within no time at all, as well, so one would need to almost immediately replace the battery. I always charge it all day long and it still won't even allow me to listen with the video screen turned off for more than a few minutes. I also was never in love with the volume dial in general, being that you rotate UP to turn it down, and rotate DOWN to turn it up. I can get used to anything, but it doesn't make much sense.
I give this product a big "BOO" for the money. One year warranty? Really? Shouldn't it really last longer that ONE YEAR? The rep told me a lot of people have no problems with it... well that's nice for them but sucks for me!
Customer Review: Cheaply made product Summary: 1 Stars
We've been using this monitor for about a year now with our son. Here is what we dislike:
1. The battery died within 2 months of use and we now must always plug it in for it to be functional.
2. The perspective of the monitor camera is not wide enough. With the monitor mounted on top of the curved headboard of our baby's crib, the camera only captures two-thirds of the bed. We've moved it to the top side of the headboard which results in a view of about three-quarters of the bed, but now our one year old can now reach it, and is constantly moving the camera elsewhere. It seems that, to capture the whole mattress, we would have to mount the camera on the wall somehow at least six feet above the bed. Not very practical.
3. The "color" monitor is joke. The color is completely faded out, which in practice, makes this a black & white monitor.
4. The lights on the monitor are very bright and flicker constantly from the white noise we keep in the baby's room. This is slightly disturbing if you parents like a dark room to sleep in. Not that big of deal though.
On the plus side, having a video monitor is great, and the sound is very sensitive so you will definitely hear when the baby cries. But I would recommend trying a different brand.
Customer Review: Necessary Baby Item Summary: 5 Stars
There is a lot of baby paraphernalia out there that is completely unnecessary, but this is a blessing to have. I am relaxed while my son sleeps because of this monitor. I, personally, wouldn't trust a 'sound only' monitor; just because it's quiet doesn't mean all is OK. With this video monitor I can see that everything is OK. It picks up sound well, the quality of the video is amazing even when it's pitch dark in his room, and there isn't noticeable static. The screen turns off after a few seconds to save battery and I usually turn the sound off during naps and just see the lights light up when he starts to make noise. Its small enough to take it to other houses when I know I'll be there at nap time, and I can bring the handset next door to let the neighbor watch him when I do a quick trip to the store. When we have our 2nd kid we'll get another set; we can have one camera on the A setting and the other on the B setting and use one monitor to watch both kids, just switch back and forth to each channel. Ww live out a country road so there isn't a problem with other people using the same channel. Highly recommended item. The only problem is that I don't nap when he naps like I should because I get distracted watching him sleep like its a TV show because he's so stinkin' cute.
