Customer Review: Staticy and Chirpy

I have a love/hate relationship with this monitor.
Pros:
- Two audio settings to allow either constant sound monitoring or voice-activated mode, so you only receive sound when the noise-level in the room changes. I do like the option of just leaving the base unit broadcasting--sometimes I just want to hear the room and not have it only transmit when the sound level changes
- Easy volume-control knob on unit which goes up very loud (if listening to your baby coo you'll be surprised at how loud the crying is)
- Picks up quieter sounds so you don't have to wait for baby to be crying to realize s/he is awake
- Light-indicator for additional confirmation of sound being picked up by the base-unit
- Price is ok
- Two parent units is useful
- many channels to choose from, although I didn't see much difference between them, in terms of interference or range
Cons:
- LOUD static sounds for no obvious reason, even when the unit is on voice-activated mode. This drives me nuts even when it's daytime, but is especially annoying when I'm trying to sleep. Sometimes it's fine for a while and sometimes you get a lot of static, or just a quick loud burst
- Range alarm chirps sporadically, sometimes frequently even when the unit is stationary and only about 30 or 40 feet from the base-unit. It seems like number of walls or moving in front of the portable unit might be contributing factors, but it will chirp at random without any provocation as well
- poor range before unit chirps or cuts out. I can't use it in the garage on the other side of the house, and our house is pretty small.
- Expect some deafening feedback if you bring the parent unit close to the base unit!
- Even if the parent unit has a charge and you plug it into the power cord but the cord is not plugged into the wall, the unit shuts off! This is a strange design flaw, and dangerous if you don't notice
- parent unit is a little bulky and doesn't have a clip, nor would it fit in a pocket
If it wasn't for the loud and random static and chirping, I would really like this monitor, but as it is, it's really annoying. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's unusable, but I plan to send it back and get something with better range and fewer sound issues. It's a shame because it already seems like a lot to spend on a baby monitor!
