Baby Products Reviews of SoftShells Breast Shell Soothers - Sore NipplesCustomer Review: Not all they're cracked up to be Summary: 3 Stars
I was very sore with cracked and bleeding nipples during my second week of nursing. I tried these shells, and did get some relief. It was nice to have something that let my nipples air dry and did not flatten them within my nursing bra. They do provide a nice contour under clothing. The silicone backing was not as flexible as I hoped it would be, and they put too much pressure on the areola around the nipple, which was equally uncomfortable. Because of this pressure, I also tended to leak more and the foam inserts were soaked in no time. Since there are holes in the top of the shells, you run the risk of having milk leak out the top anytime you bend over. I ended up returning them to the store due to discomfort wearing them for periods longer than 2 hours, and I simply toughed it out instead.
Customer Review: I Strongly Recommend These! Summary: 5 Stars
I first used these while nursing our third baby and my nipples were cracked and bleeding. I was assured that latching on was correct. I am fair-skinned, so maybe that contributed to the problem. Whatever. The shells helped almost immediately and within a couple of days I was so much more comfortable.
We just had our fourth baby and I've been using the shells since my milk came in. I've had NO PAIN whatsoever!
I know proper nursing isn't supposed to hurt, but in my case (and most of my friends' cases) there are a few weeks when latching on and getting going can be pretty toe-curling. These shells saved me from that this time around. I don't know why they are not promoted more! They are so worth the money!
Customer Review: These are a lifesaver!!! Summary: 5 Stars
My son was in the NICU when he was born and had grown accustomed to the bottle, and didn't want to take the time to latch on properly. I was extremely sore, and experienced cracking and bleeding. My dear, sweet husband bought these, and almost immediately I felt relief from the soreness because of the nursing bra . These allowed my nipples to heal and also drew them out which helped my son to latch on properly. I can honestly say these (and my being stubborn) saved me from stopping breastfeeding. The only drawback to these is that I cannot find additional inserts, and the pack only comes with two sets. I don't think the inserts last me through future children should I need these again.
Customer Review: Not helpful for me Summary: 2 Stars
My son has been having latching problems due to my milk overproduction and VERY forceful letdown, so my nipples are usually very sore. My lactation consultant suggested these for my sore nipples, but because I overproduce so much milk, the pressure of the shells on my areola hurts just as bad as my sore nipples! So, this product has not been too helpful for me. The Medela Soft Shells for Inverted or Flat Nipples did help me fix my flat nipple problem at the beginning, though. And a good solution to those useless little sponges - my LC suggested putting tampons inside the shells instead of the sponges. They soak up SO much more leaking milk and kept me from soaking through my clothing!
Customer Review: Couldn't have made it without these! Summary: 5 Stars
I had significant nursing issues when my daughter's top teeth came in because they were wearing holes at the base of my nipples. I worked with four different lactation consultants and a LLL leader and nobody knew why the holes kept forming. The only good advice I got was to use these shields. Eventually I figured out on my own that the way to solve my nursing problem was to get a really, really deep latch every time I nursed, but I doubt I would have even gotten to that point without these shields. It beats walking around topless 24/7, plus, with all the ointments I was having to use I'd make a mess when I was topless. Using these shields allowed my nipples to heal.
