There is an age when kids want to toss everything on the floor just to see it fall. It's not practical to use plates in this situation, especially at restaurants where said plates may break. So, out comes this handy solution. We can put the food there, on a clean spot, and there is no plate to throw. The tape keeps it firmly in place. Beware of the child seeing you place it on, though. Once my son saw me do it, he was forever trying to peel the placemats off -- another worry. But at least placemats don't break.
I found this to be a quality product. Very handy in situaations I described. However, be careful of wooden tables. It took the varnish off of one table we sat at.

a friend gave these to me as a gift and I just had to order more. these are great to place on a table in a restaurant when your little one eats food off the table using her hands. I can cut up my food and place it on the mat knowing that it's not getting any germs from the table. it's a big enough size area too so I don't have to worry about food coming off of it and her eating that. the mat is colorful and the characters amuse her until the food arrives at our table.
the only thing is the carry case is bulky and would take up too much room in a diaper bag. I use the case at home to store the mats in and just keep a couple of these in my diaper bag for when we need them.

Love these stick-on placemats!! They are a great little item that you never knew you needed. We have been ueing these since our daugther was about 12 months old. She is now 17 months old and we never go to a restaurant with out them. She can put the food she's eating like bread and butter directly on the table at a restaurant because these cover enough area in front of her. Plus, she points out the characters on the mat at the same time, which keeps her entertained for a few minutes. I wish big chain family restaurants would stock these instead of the paper ones for the very little ones who can't color yet. These placemats are great. They fold up very small so you can keep them anywhere (including your pocket). Another great feature is that you are able to place them on the table that they overlap the edge and go under the table where the baby is sitting. If your child is like mine he liked to grab under the table so it was nice to know the grime under it was covered as well. They were also great for entertaining him a little while we waited for dinner to arrive. A friend of mine had a rubbery mat that was not disposable and it was inconvenient to carry and then you had to clean it before taking it home. These you just toss. My 10 month old loves to feed himself and now with the use of these placemats he can do it without me being worried about germs. We take these any time we eat out in a public place. They easily stick to the table and he gobbles his food right up. Although he makes a big mess pushing his food around and sometimes getting his arms in it, that's part of the fun. I would recommend keeping your child away from the table while applying, once my son saw how to it goes on he quickly tried to take it off the table. Now we wait to slide him in arm's reach of the table until it's applied. He loves the colorful Sesame Street characters.
