These locks are good but the instructions are horrible. I wish I could communicate with some of the other reviewers because I think they missed a key concept with these locks. The metal from the lock needs to be at LEAST 1/8" from the outside of the cabinet door, this means if you have thick-walled cabinets you MUST install the extension pins when you put the lock in the door!!! This extends the metal from the lock into your cabinet and allows the magnet to unlock the lock. If you don't do this then the actual metal from the lock could be too far away for the magnet to have any effect on it.Another problem is that these can be VERY hard to install in drawers because you must install a mating piece on the cabinet face as well as in the drawer and there is little to no room with most cabinet drawers to get a screwdriver in to install the mating piece.

My cabinet door is 3/4" thick, and after properly installing the lock, I was dismayed to find that the magnet will not open it. The door is too thick for the magnet to have enough pull, but too thin for us to use the extention magnet.
I tried both locks from the package, and neither worked. I even accidentally drilled all the way through the door, so there is no wood in between the lock and the magnetic key, however the key still can not open the lock.
The locks do work when they're not installed in the door, but once they are installed there is too much space and wood in between the magnets. I wanted to post this as a warning to anyone with similar-sized doors; if your door is a little too narrow for using the extention magnet, you may have problems.

These locks just cannot be beat. They were featured on HGTV to baby-proof your house which is how I found out about them in the first place. They cannot be opened at ALL by the child, unlike many of the other items out there. You have to not only have the key to open the door, you have to know how to manipulate it to open. If you have chemicals that you have store within a child's reach, there is no other better way than this lock to make SURE that child is safe. I feel very blessed that I found out these locks exist because my little one is extremely curious and figures out EVERYTHING! Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Regarding the installation, my husband is not a handyman - he's a musician and if he can figure it out, so can just about anyone else. Buy them!Customer Review: Excellant Product

I have to admit, installation instructions are confusing at first, but if you just trust the "Stick on" alignment template to be your guide, installation will be simple.I drilled the hole for the magnetic recess first, then pre-drilled the holes to mount the latch using the latch as my guide. With a hardwood cabinet door, the grain may cause your drill to "walk" using the template provided. If this occurs the holes will not line up and installation will cause you much grief.
I like the fact these locks can be bybassed once the child is older and left in place and reactivated when small children visit. Another great feature is that the doors/drawers do not open enough for little fingers to get behind and pinched.

These are sooo much better than the normal "latch" child proofing. With a latch, a child can still get their fingers into the door/cabinet - and then push forward squishing their fingers. These magnetic locks keep a cabinet shut tight. I have had them installed for 5 years - I installed them myself (I am the mother). They are more work than the cheap little latch hooks normally used - but so worth it! They are a bit time consuming to install - but not rocket science. I still use them every day. The only thing I would recommend is getting an additional magnet for opening - it's nice to have just in case you misplace one. We keep them on our fridge or microwave - out of reach of little hands. What a wonderful invention!
