Baby Products Reviews of Safety 1st Tot-Lok Four Lock Assembly

Customer Review: Unlike the plastic ones, these actually work!
Summary: 5 Stars

While I was pregnant, our cats began a bad habit of getting into our cabinets. We installed the plastic child locks, but the cats learned in less than two weeks how to bypass them. If those didn't even keep the cats out, we thought, how could they possibly work for a determined, curious child? I was hesitant after reading some of the negative reviews here on Amazon, but the plastic locks clearly weren't helping so we decided to give these a try. We were very glad we did. One reviewer suggested sitting down and going over the instructions BEFORE you even get out your drill and get to work. That was excellent advice and probably saved us some frustration. My husband spent about 15 minutes studying the instructions and there another 15-20 minute "learning curve" as he installed the first lock. But after that, lock for lock, installation time was right on par with the plastic locks. We have custom cabinets, and had no problems. Very thick cabinets require use of the metal slugs (included in kit), but we didn't need them.

Customer Review: Too frustrating to install!
Summary: 2 Stars

I had heard that these locks were supposed to be so good and childproof, and bought them despite the cost. When I tried to install them I just got really frustrated with how many holes you have to drill per lock, the tedious measuring you have to do, and I accidentally drilled all the way through the door in one spot... My own fault, I know, but the huge drill bit size and the multiple holes per lock makes this too possible... I got so annoyed I gave up, and quickly and easily installed some "regular" white plastic locks instead, and will return the magnetic ones. My son is only 1 so he may still figure out how to open the white locks as he gets older, but until then I will spare myslef the frustration of trying to install the magnetic locks on 13 doors...! If you do buy these locks, make sure a very patient and precise person can install them...! Good luck!

Customer Review: Destructo Child
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a 16 month old little boy who loves to "explore" everything in our house. If we hadn't bought these Tot Loks we would have had to hang everything from the ceiling!! We had plastic levers for our drawers and he would pull them open to the 1" give and shake the drawer back and forth, finally they broke. We installed the Tot Loks and now he doesn't even mess with any of the drawers. He was a little frustrated at first but now, even when I have the locks disabled, he doesn't mess with the drawers or the sliding doors on our showcase. These are a must for every parent that can't afford to completely remodel their house for their baby. We still had to put a lot of things away, but you can't exactly put every piece of furniture you own away. I have recommended these to every new or expectant mom I know. They really are a must!

Customer Review: Work well, but installation is horrible
Summary: 2 Stars

These latches work well enough, and it's nice that they are invisible once installed. But installation was a painful process, involving copious use of profanity on my part. Some notable issues:
- The microsized instruction sheet is nearly useless.
- The screws are way too small. I had to use a #0 Phillips to tighten them: most people probably don't _have_ a screwdriver this small. You can try to use a #1 Phillips, but you'll instantly strip the screws. It's very difficult to get the screws tight.
- So, you think, I'll just go to the hardware store and get bigger screws. But no: for anything larger you'd have to enlarge the holes in the lock, and there's just not much margin to drill them out bigger.
This would be a fine product if the manufacturer had put a bit more (or any?) thought into installation.

Customer Review: FANTASTIC LOCKS - SO EASY TO INSTALL
Summary: 5 Stars

I love these locks, and the fact that when baby is asleep or out of the house, you can deactivate them with a quick flick of a little switch!! (obviously, you need to remember to reactivate them, or they are useless).

I completely disagree with the "impossible to install" reviewer - they could not have been more self-explanatory! (Send those that are hanging in your garage to us - we'll use them!) We did need to use a drill, but they are far stronger than any others (especially the stick-on ones) that we tried.

You do need to have a set spot that the "key" goes after each use, or you will be frustrated and out of luck if the key is misplaced. All family members needing access to the locked cabinets must religiously return the key to its place - and the locks work like a charm!
