Baby Products Reviews of Safety 1st Tot-Lok Four Lock AssemblyCustomer Review: Worth the trouble Summary: 5 Stars
I installed my Tot Loks throughout the house about a year ago when my older son was learning to walk. I didn't see much point in writing a review at that time because I would've just said the same things other people have said: Challenging to install, but you get the hang of it after you've done a few; very strong; invisible; your tots will not be able to defeat it unless they come from the planet Krypton.
I'm here to write this review because having lived with them for a year, I can say that you completely get used to using the magnet to open your cabinets. I can easily do it with one hand now; if you clasp the magnet right you still have your thumb available to slip over the top of the door to grasp and open it. You also learn exactly where to put the magnet to activate the clasp every time. Since the clasp makes a little click noise when it's opened, you have positive aural feedback that the cabinet is ready to open so there's no wasted effort: Apply magnet and open. Every time.
Somewhere along the way my older son figured out he was never going to get into these cabinets so he completely stopped trying a long time ago. If that's not a testament to their effectiveness then I don't know what is.
Customer Review: Excellent deterrant for cute little curious hands Summary: 5 Stars
This was the first thing that I bought after we moved into our house. The installation instructions on this thing are horrible, but can be figured out. With all these compliants about installation instuctions you would think that the company would revise them to be easier to understand. This has been the best investment I made in child-proofing my house. My very very curious and inquisitive 21 month old cannot disrupt any of our stuff from the kitchen and bathrooms. Just get these for the bottom cabinets and you will have peace in the house. Along with peace for you, you want your kid to be happy too. Based on a pointer that I got from more experienced parents, I left one cabinet door in the kitchen without a lock and put in only wooden spoons and plasticware in it. That way, the kids can satisfy their curiosity and can be happy imitating their parents without getting hurt. Also, get a key for every room where these locks are installed and see that the kids don't get access to those keys (no. they may not figure out out to use it, but if they lose it, the keys are very expensive to replace). With small kids, happy homes start with these locks. Cheers.
Customer Review: The Best System! Summary: 5 Stars
These are the best cabinet safety system available! I decided to brave the installation, even though I'd read it was difficult. However I thought it was perfectly clear...it is a good idea to look it all over a few times, make sure you understand what is what, and check out the installation guide first. However it was a breeze to do. The hardest part was that our cabinets have a little silicon bumper pad in the corner, which made too great a gap for the door to stick on the foam adhesive strip during the installation process...however we just doubled up the installation guides (stuck them together) so they were thicker and it was smooth sailing after that.
We didn't have a 7mm drill bit, but we had 6.2 and that was just fine to use, you just had to push the lock in a little harder.
I love that my daughter and friends can't squash their fingers in the cabinets, like traditional safety products allow. I thought these were a bit expensive for the whole system, however I would buy them again immediately and recommend every parent to invest. They are SO worth the money. Very very very good product!
Customer Review: Really Wonderful Product! Summary: 5 Stars
This is one product every parent needs for keeping their active toddlers safe! I agree, it's a bit tedious to install, but you only have to install it once and it's good to go.I love the deactivation flip-switch, so you can keep them installed even when your child gets older and keep them for when you have another child or for re-sale value of your house! We use the lock also on a cabinet for our wine and it works beautifully! Another really good feature is that when activated, the door does not open at all! Some locking mechanisims require that the cabinet be opened an inch or two in order to deactivate it. This allows a small child with small hands to reach inside a cabinet and pull something out (or attempt to) and could lead to a potentially dangerous situation. I replaced all of my other locks with these and am very happy with them. Keep the magnet on the fridge, though. It does like to "travel" to adjacent pots, pans, soda cans, anything that may be near it on the counter. To avoid melting it, throwing it away or just plain losing the key - keep it in a handy spot on the fridge!
Customer Review: Tot Loks Are Great! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a wooden desk that seemed to be unchildproofable! I tried several different latch-style locks but nothing would fit because of the way the desk is built. I read some reviews on these Tot Loks and I have to admit I was afraid to buy them because everyone was saying that they are difficult to install. I bought some anyway. I found that they were EASIER to install than any two piece latch-style locks. With the latch-style, you have to do tedious measuring which I have zero patience with. Tot Loks come with little templates so, there is NO MEASURING involved!! My advice to anyone is to read the instructions over four or five times while sitting in front of your drawers or cabinets with all the pieces of the locks with you. After reading and looking for a while, I understood completely. I also suggest using some clear tape to tape down the template, especially on the side where you have to drill several holes. These take some time to install but, with a little patience, they are very simple and VERY effective! I'm glad I got them and I will be getting more!
