Baby Products Reviews of Safety 1st Simple Step Diaper Pail

Customer Review: It's ok
Summary: 3 Stars

This diaper pail worked very well for me up to a point. I believe the size is just fine (it holds about 2-3 days' worth of dirty diapers). The foot lever works fine, opening the lid enough for me to put the dirty diaper in it without using my hands. I've read complaints of the lid not opening enough and the lid of the pail getting dirty as a result (maybe those reviewers got a defective product. Mine certainly opened more than 3 inches). I didn't have a problem with this, since I bundle up the dirty diaper in a tight wad before throwing it in (not to mention that this also further minimizes the stink).

So, like I said, it worked very well for about a year. After that, I don't know what happened that it didn't contain the odor of stinky diapers anymore, not even for a day. So I started to dump the waste in the toilet first, then bundle up the diaper, then put it in a plastic bag, then in the diaper pail. Didn't work much. Then I tried doubling up on the plastic bags. Didn't work. (I also washed it about once a week, but it helps only marginally). It's as if the stink had completely permeated the hard plastic of the pail (I never used the pail without a plastic bag). It even stinks when it's empty! I might as well leave the diapers out in the open. So, after 1 and 1/2 years, I'm ready to get a different pail.

Customer Review: Not much better than a normal garbage pail.
Summary: 1 Stars

I researched diaper pails extensively and decided that I would try this product first since it was the least expensive. I was hoping for a low risk, high reward scenario but it didn't work out that way.

The product is no different from a step-open trash can with the exception that it has a small holster in the lid to place a deodorant cartridge. If you were to buy a cheaper step-open trash can and tape a strong air-freshener to the lid you might not notice a difference from using this product. It doesn't actually contain odors. It's effectiveness is based on 2 features: (1) small volume which doesn't hold too many diapers and requires very frequent emptying, and (2) masking odors with deodorant cartridge.

The pros of this product are it's inexpensive price and ability to use any bags - no expensive refills. These advantages, however, were not enough for me.

I was not satisfied with it's ability to contain odors so I purchased the Diaper Champ - the older 4100 model, not the newer poorer rated model. It is much much more effective at containing the odors and totally worth the extra money. It also allows you to use any bags you want AND it doesn't require you to purchase deodorant cartridges so the difference in price is negligible.

Customer Review: If I Could Ever Love A Diaper Pail
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best diaper pail...ever. I can't speak for cloth diaper users, but this sucker can hold a day's worth of disposable diapers from three kids. Which is great for me because not only is there this hilarious rule about day care facilities not keeping used diapers around children for longer than a day, but I actually don't want to have them around for longer than that! They stink!
There is some diaper etiquette you must follow, no matter what pail you use to keep down smell. Once the diaper is off - wrap that bomb up tight as you can. Make sure to put all used wipes in with it! This pail is not magical, so throw some baking soda in the bottom to cut down on the acidy smell that builds up in there.
My favorite part about the pail is the foot pedal. Kids have this funny tendency to copy what I do, so my last diaper pail's foot pedal got stomped on A LOT. And then tragically it broke. Jagged plastic, non-working pedal, touching the germ infested lid all the time....AAHHHHHH. This pedal is nice and sturdy and lifts the lid wide open.
This simple design is all I really need in a diaper pail, with a great price to match. Thank you Amazon! You are my hero.

Customer Review: Perfect For Cat Litter!
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this after reading reviews that recommended it for disposing of cat litter. My hubby scoops the litter twice a day and usually just puts it in a plastic bag that he leaves in the closet, but it was really stinky and so he ended up having to throw out the litter every single day. This is not only aggravating, but uses up a lot of plastic bags, which we are not too happy about since we are trying to be environmentally friendly.

This pail is ideal for the litter. I do agree with others that when you step on the foot pedal it does not open completely. I am also not sure if there is a specific deodorizing product to be used in the built in deodorizer compartment, but it appears that others are just using anything that works well for them.

I use the diaper pail bags from Babies 'R Us (their brand) in this pail and they work/fit great. I also HIGHLY recommend these deodorizers: Munchkin Arm and Hammer Nursery Fresheners, 5 Pack

Customer Review: Pail tips over when you step on pedal
Summary: 1 Stars

I ordered this pail after reading many reviews and was so disappointed when we received it. It is awful! The design is so poor that it can't even function as a diaper pail. When you step on the pedal to open the lid, the entire pail tips over. It is so off balance that placing it against a wall doesn't even solve the problem - it will flip itself over against a wall. We even tried putting a small can of paint in it to add some weight to it and hopefully prevent it from flipping over. That didn't work either! It is quite comical. Did the designers never attempt to use this product?

Maybe they changed the design recently? Other reviewers had mentioned that the lid didn't open very much when you stepped on the foot pedal. Ours opened all the way.

You can't easily open the lid with your hand to remedy the problem. There is no good grip on the lid to pry it open. So the flipping foot pedal is really the only option. This diaper pail is being returned.
