Baby Products Reviews of Safety 1st Simple Step Diaper Pail

Customer Review: Not so good if you're using cloth.
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this pail for use with cloth diapers. This pail works but has some flaws.

I like the foot pedal but it doesn't work all that well, it basically lifts it up enough to squeeze the diaper in. I feel it should lift higher so that I'm not struggling to insert a diaper.

The pail is made to use standard size grocery store bags but they are a tight squeeze and I can barely fit one days worth of cloth diapers in the pail. They are larger than disposable diapers so I'm not sure how many disposables it could hold. Trying to get a standard size grocery bag on it is such a pain (and in my case, wasteful since I use cloth diapers that I have to wash) that I made a liner from PUL (the waterproof material cloth diapers are made from) with an elastic top that goes in the wash with my diapers. It fits great although the heavier cloth material makes it more difficult for the metal rod/lever to lift the lid but it is not much different than with a plastic bag.

This pail has a compartment in the top with holes for, what I'm assuming to be, an air freshener. I use a piece of an old cut up t-shirt with a couple drops of essential oil (orange, lemon, lavender, etc.) to give the pail a nicer smell when it's open. I haven't smelled any odors except for when I open the lid. Of course, this may be because I have to empty it every day since it does not hold that many diapers. It looks taller in the pictures (to me) than it is in person. (Someone suggested to me to use this pail for scooped kitty litter when we're out of diapers- just a thought)

Customer Review: Not only for parents.
Summary: 5 Stars

Although it's called a "Diaper Pail" it does not have to serve as one; I use mine to store used kitty litter before disposal. Yes, I know it sounds DISGUSTING but it's extremely convenient. My boyfriend and I are trying to live more ecofriendly so we're using the reusable grocery bags and cutting down on plastic bags. Well as all cat owners know, it is almost essential to obtain disposable plastic bags to remove cat waste daily. Even though I was reusing those pesky bags, I wanted to reduce further so I purchased this simple contraption.

When I first bought this pail I was initially surprised at how big it was. From what I understood was that it was just big enough to fit a normal sized grocery bag. Well to my surprise the grocery bags that I had were too small, so I put a regular trash bag inside (temporary until I find a better fitting bag). The opening is large enough to fit the scooper and the waste. I've been using it for 2 weeks and there's plenty of room left (I have 1 young cat).

Since I live in a small 800 sqft apartment, smell is ALWAYS an issue. This bucket does NOT leak any odors out! I'm so amazed. First I dumped some baking soda at the bottom of the bag to absorb odors. The lid has a nifty compartment for an air freshener so I dampened a paper towel with some essential oil. Sometimes the odor is unbareable when I step on the lever to open the lid so I just dump more baking soda in and viola the odor is gone. I keep this pail in my bathroom temporarily and it's not a problem.

Customer Review: great pail for cloth
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like this pail. We cloth diaper our 4 month old and have been using this pail with cloth since he was 6 days old. So far I have no complaints. We had registered for a larger more expensive pail and when we didn't get one we decided to buy this because it was very inexpensive and all we really needed was a place to put the diapers because odor isn't much of a problem with cloth. This pail has really done a good job of that. It's small, but it's good that it's small. It holds about 18 prefolds and several covers, if we were doing pockets it might hold less than that. But 18 is more than enough diapers for two days and if it held more I might be less likely to do the laundry every two days like I need to. :) It is very nice that it has the pedal. I have no problems with it unless my husband forgets to close it all the way when he opens it up to get the diapers out. If that happens the whole lid kind of pops up just a tiny bit. But that's a mere operator's flaw. I also really like how a regular sized grocery bag is the perfect fit to be used to line the pail. And there is this nifty little compartment on the lid that I can put a tea tree oil infused rag in (or any deodorizer) to keep the ammonia smell at bay. I will probably have to get another one, or a bigger pail when I have another baby though, because there is no way I can two days worth of cloth for two kids in there. Also this wouldn't make a very good wet pail if that is what you are planning to use it for, in my opinion.

Customer Review: Good little trash can
Summary: 4 Stars

Overall, this is nearly perfect for what I wanted it for - cat litter. It is small, which is perfectly fine for dirty litter from one cat. I wouldn't have wanted it any bigger. I don't smell anything coming from it, but then we finally found a litter that doesn't smell either, so it's hard to say. I have a two-year-old also, so we have another diaper pail that's actually used for diapers. I don't think I'd trade it for this for that purpose. This is pretty small, we can fit about a weeks worth of dirty disposables in our diaper pail, and I doubt this would fit more than a couple days worth. Nor does it have the extra flap that so many diaper pails do have to help with keeping smell in and kids out. On the other hand, for the price, it's awesome. We paid a LOT more for our diaper pail than this.

It does fit standard grocery store bags, but they have to be smashed between the pail and lid to stay put. Not a big deal. Although small hooks on the sides to hold the bag would be a nice convenience. I took off a star for two reasons. The pail is plastic, which slides very nicely on hard floors. Not exactly a feature. It's an easy fix to buy little rubber stick-on feet for it, but it would have been nice if it came with them. Second, the space for the foot pedal is small. If I'm barefoot it's fine, but if I have a pair of shoes on it's hard to get my foot in there to step on it. That said, for the purpose and price, I'd buy it again.

Summary: 4 Stars

"Helps keep unpleasant diaper odors from leaving the pail"
- Yes, it does. Our daugther is only 3 months old, so the really stinky diapers are still to come (so I'm told). I always change the pail outside, and it smells when doing so.

"Built-in deodorizer compartment"
- It doesn't stink around it, so I'll agree with that statement

"Locks in a closed position so children won't open the pail"
WRONG. You can easily life the lid up with your fingers. Our baby is too young to crawl, so that hasn't been an issue yet, but I guarantee she will be able to lift it open when the time comes.

"Uses standard plastic bags"
This was the selling point. My wife is anti-garbage bags. She saves all her grocery bags, throws trash in there which then goes to the can outside. I've learned to deal with it. It is amazing how many diapers a regular grocery bag can hold, but I suggest using a bag a little larger.

"Easy one-hand use"
It has a foot pedal - no hands needed.

Overall, this works well. No expensive, unit specific pail liner system to purchase. Those who complain about it stinking when changing the pail - seriously, get over yourself. Do it outside, breathe out your nose - you will deal with far nastier stuff with a child than a stinky diaper pail.
