Baby Products Reviews of Safety 1st Potty 'n Step StoolCustomer Review: Not Happy With This Potty! Summary: 1 Stars
We had the same problems other people did with this potty. Pee sprayed out when my daughter sat on it, and the splash guard is useless for a boy since it doesn't stay in place at all. The seat comes off of the base all the time, and the lid closes on the child's back while they are sitting on it. The bottom is narrower than the seat, so it is prone to tipping with a kid on it. The step stool is too low to actually be helpful for getting a small toddler onto the big toilet. The seat didn't fit on top of our toilet very well either, but we managed to use it anyway, although maybe others have different shaped toilet seats that would work better for this. Also, in order to use it as a step stool you have to snap on separate little anti-skid thingies, which cannot be kept on it when using as a regular potty chair or it won't close properly, so they are likely to get lost somewhere in the process of detaching and reattaching them between uses, since the potty has no built-in storage area for these little attachments. And, its construction makes it pretty difficult to keep clean. I wouldn't recommend this and am looking for a better seat to buy.
Customer Review: Starts out okay, turns out to be a pretty bad potty seat, especially for boys! Summary: 1 Stars
We bought this a few weeks ago, for our 2 1/2 year old son. He began using it on his own after a couple of days of us just having it out. The positives are, it's got a lid that is fun, and it's very easy to empty, and easy to assemble once you figure out these little rubbery things that help it not slip. Negatives are, the seat is very tiny, the little "pee guard" that flips up for little boys, constantly and I mean CONSTANTLY falls off or flips down right when he gets on it! I was trying to hook it back on yesterday while he was on it (he said he really, really had to go) and I got peed on in the process, so that wasn't so fun. My little guy gets into an odd cowboy straddle position to back onto the potty so that pee guard doesn't go down, and yet 90% of the time it falls off while he's on it, or it flips down and it's hard to get it back up once he's on it. Also it doesn't seem very stable. So I'm really wishing we didn't buy it, and greatful it was so cheap. Go with another potty! Makes me wish I would've kept the one we used with our older son.
Customer Review: Looks nice, but it's junk. Summary: 2 Stars
We bought it for our daughter. She hates it, and at this point would rather hide in a corner to pee than have to sit on this thing. The hole is itty bitty, and she's very uncomfortable sitting on it. It tips over very easily, and when that happens, pee and poop go everywhere. It does indeed fall apart, as other reviews have noted. And the interior of the potty is very difficult to clean, with way too many nooks and crannies that can be accidentally filled with pee and poop. As a result, it literally stinks all of the time.
The step stool is too short to help my tall three year old reach the potty when using the step stool / insert feature. She has to heft herself up and gingerly scoot back to get herself over the teeny tiny hole. Thoroughly junk.
I got it because it was cheap, plain, and seemed like it would be perfectly serviceable. No, it's just cheap and plain. Now we need to find something else, and I'm cranky about having wasted money on this piece of junk first.
Customer Review: Practical Potty for the Price--Use with two boys Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this potty for my first son, 5 years ago, when he was 1. It worked great to introduce him to the potty and transition him to the regular toilet. What I LOVED about this potty is that it fit well in my van. When accidents would have occurred because I had no where to take my son to use the restroom, he could sit on his potty no matter where we were.
Yes, you have to deal with lifting the top of the potty to get to the cup to empty, but aren't all potty seats that way? It wasn't inconvenient to me to use this potty. We "sometimes" used the step stool, but most of our use was as a portable potty in the car when my son was trained.
My 3 year old uses it now in the car when those emergencies occur. It has been a well used, practical potty for the price I paid. There are other pottys that have cool sounds and other gadgets to look like a toilet, etc. This potty fit our needs for two boys !
Customer Review: definite boy problems! Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this potty on the fly at the store without looking at any reviews. I didn't really care that it converted to a stool or anything else, just needed a basic potty at a good price. And basically, this fits the bill. However, as other reviewers have noted, the deflector DOES NOT stay in place at all. It repeatedly got knocked in the bowl or fell off when my son sat down. This is a pain!! Lucky for me, he has yet to have GONE to the bathroom when it got knocked in (PT is a big struggle at our house), so I haven't had to pull it out of a mess!! Although you would prefer Safety 1st to make a product doesn't have this problem (and quite frankly, I expected better), I will offer up this solution. I bought self-adhesive extra strong velcro and made it so the deflector stays in place, but still can be removed for cleaning or when its not needed.
