I bought two of these gates for the top and bottom of my staircase about six months ago and am VERY happy with them. My 17 month old son and Rottweiler have definately tried their best to open, break, and beat down these gates without success :)
As previous reviewers state, the gate MUST be hardware mounted in order to be used as a swing gate, but this wasn't an issue for me since I needed to hardware mount the gate at the top of the stairs no matter what. The gate's lift & lock mechanism is a bit tricky, but easy to use once mastered. My toddler has so far been unable to climb, open, or knock down this gate. Overall I'm pleased with this purchase.

I use this gate to keep my two Cocker Spaniels and one Shih Tzu out of my bedrooms and it works perfectly, although one of the Cockers jumped over it because my husband told her how to do so. That's why I decided to mount the gate hardware and left a little space at the bottom so the gate is a little taller and now she can't jump over and neither can pass under. I can take the gate easily off and mount it pressure on any door frame of my house. It's very easy to open and close, a bit complicate at the beginning if you don't know how it works, but then there is no problem at all. This gate looks great and it is not expensive. I actually think this is a pretty good gate, but my husband hates it, so I averaged it out. It is excellent if all you are looking for is a sturdy, inexpensive pressure gate. It is a hassle to move and replace, so I just swing my legs over it, but my husband refuses to do this and moves it every time, following it up with a good twenty seconds of strongly-worded complaints. If you mount it to the wall, you supposedly can swing it like a door, but that wouldn't work well in this doorway so we haven't tried it. If we move, we will be getting the kind that has an inner swing gate for the kitchen and use this in a less used doorway.Customer Review: hard to use, quit working

I never really liked this gate because it is somewhat hard to use. I bought another one because I needed two gates and this one was the only one available.
The first one that I bought no longer works. The handle used to open and adjust it will not lift.
I have the new one pressure mounted at the bottom of the stairs and it works ok for this. My banister post is round and tapered so it is smaller at the top. The pressure mounts on this gate adjust a little to fit, so it is working as a temporary fix.
It would work fine for a plain pressure mount, but it is hard to step over.

I wish I could've given this four and a half stars. This gate is wonderful. I love the fact that it's so easily moved from one location to the next. I love that my 4 year old can open the gate, but my 1 year old doesn't stand a chance. I love that it doesn't mark up my walls. My only complaint about this gate would be that it doesn't work with tall baseboards. Not a problem in my house, but I can see how that would be a pain in some situations. It's also a tad bit of work to adjust sizing, but barely even worth mentioning. This gate truly is wonderful and it was an excellent purchase!
