Baby Products Reviews of Safety 1st High-Def Digital Video MonitorCustomer Review: Does not function as advertised Summary: 1 StarsI bought this monitor for three reasons
1) The claimed 650' reception capability
2) The claimed non-interference with wireless networks
3) Security (not seeing someone else's kid on the same channel).
I can't verify point 3, but the product wholly failed on the first two counts. I live on the second floor of an apartment building, so I had hoped that I could use the monitor to get the mail in the lobby while my child is sleeping. Unfortunately, the reception cut off about 10' outside my doorway. I tried repositioning the camera but could not improve upon the results. While the product worked everywhere within my apartment, it did not function far beyond the door and did not work at all when on another floor. To get less than 30' of reception from the product is simply unacceptable when it claims 650'.
The device also takes down wireless internet networks whenever it is functioning. Even if you are willing to live with the problem, there's a good bet that your neighbor's wireless network is also being affected. Hence, I could not in good conscience continue using this product even if I was willing to tolerate this disability.
A few other minor issues--
The handheld unit is not well designed to stay upright--it topples over too easily.
Also, although the unit is clearer than analog devices, it also emits a hiss even when the room is completely silent.
The so-called zoom function is merely a software trick--the image is doubled in size but half as clear.
The only great aspect of the product is the night vision. Even in near-total darkness, the image is fairly good. But this singular positive side does not even begin to make up for its numerous flaws.
Customer Review: The best monitor you can buy! Summary: 5 StarsThis is the best monitor ever! Absolutely NO static, clear image on screen, it has no flaws! Fantastic product!
Customer Review: The best I've found so far Summary: 4 StarsI should preface this by saying we live in a 1450 sq. foot condo.
I first tried the First Alert. Too much noise static. Then we got the Summer Infant with 2.5" screen. It was defective from the get-go.
We have had no static or interference with the Safety first. You need a lot of light to see the image in color, but that's really not important to me.
It goes into "sleep" mode, where the image blanks out and comes on when my daughter makes noise (or when I manually turn it back on). This feature didn't even work on the previous monitors I tried.
Our condo is small, but we are upstairs and our daughter is downstairs and we get a clear picture through a ceiling and several walls.
Customer Review: Hope you have plenty of time to track down the instruction manual Summary: 1 StarsInstruction manual not included and only available through website or via phone with cutomer service.Would send it back if i could - i don't know how well it works as it was a baby gift and i have been spending the past few days trying to get and instruction manual from the manufacturer. Website not helpful...neither is their customer service...
Customer Review: Read directions or call tech support--this monitor is better than you think! Summary: 4 StarsWe've had our Safety 1st digital monitor for about 2 months now. The most difficult part is really reading the directions, and learning how to set the monitor so the baby's image is on the screen 100% of the time--if that's indeed what you want. Admittedly, we had to call tech support to figure out how to use the monitor like we wanted. In other reviews, so many folks complain about the logo coming up before the baby's image, but they don't realize that's an energy-saving feature (the image can stay on 5, 15, or 25 seconds, then it blacks out, and turns to sound-only). You can turn this feature OFF so that the baby's image is up on the screen all the time, without having to press the "View" button to see the baby again. Of course leaving the image on 100% of the time means the battery runs out sooner if you use the monitor cordless, but big deal--if we have it on for hours, we just plug it in wherever we are in the house. We've found this monitor to be great because it's small, portable, has great reception, and a clear image. You can also add additional cameras, if you have multiple children in different rooms. Because we've had a good experience with it, I've recommended this monitor to several friends. Safety 1st should update their product directions, so that people understand they can turn the energy-saving feature off, but their tech support was very friendly and helpful when we called.
