Baby Products Reviews of Safety 1st High-Def Digital Video MonitorCustomer Review: Best as of July 2009 Summary: 5 Stars
As of July 2009, this is the best video monitor available through amazon. We have tried several models and none came close to this one.
Pros: great sound quality, great image quality (for its intended purpose), very easy to use, the monitor is handy, the volume can be modulated and even cut off, an alarm will sound once the battery is empty.
Cons: The price. Cannot be used as an intercom (but can be used to communicate one way from unit to monitor). The battery monitor is very simple (a flashing light informs you of the state of charge but there is no data, e.g. expected time left or percentage of battery used up). The little light on the central unit could be annoying.
The listed price is $299, I paid something like $190, which is a great deal. So for $200, I'd go for it without hesitation.
Quite frankly, it is difficult to understand why there aren't better video monitors around...
Customer Review: Very Dissapointed Summary: 2 Stars
I did a lot of research before buying this and have had it for a year now. We still use it, but it is really overpriced for what it is, poorly designed and poorly supported.
Pros
-Decent video and audio although you will never see a picture even close to what they show on the ad. I oftern question if the video is actually color.
-Range is pretty decent. Works anywhere in and around the house, no interference from wireless networks or phones.
Cons
-Very frustrating menu design.
-Slow bootup for video, even after it is on, if video times out, you have to go through what seems to be a reboot to get video back on.
-Absolutely horrible battery life. Wont go through the night on batteries, but if you leave it plugged in the crappy nicad batteries they say you have to use wont hold a change for more than 15min.
-Rude and incompetent customer support
Customer Review: Don't plan on keeping it... Summary: 2 Stars
This was a good monitor. We did quite a bit of research before we bought it, and I think we did well. There were no interference issues; sound and picture were very good. The screen could be a little bigger, and the battery life could be improved. With that said, don't plan on keeping it for your next baby. We paid nearly $200 for this monitor an expected it would last for several years--Quite the contrary. Our daughter is now 9 months old, and the receiver no longer works. I am not positive this is what happened, but it seems that the batteries over-charged, getting too warm. This caused damage to the battery casing so a solid connection can no longer be made with the batteries. Replacing the housing would most likely resolve the issue, but to date we have not received a response to our warranty claim. So, buyer beware. Good product, but very expensive for something with a nine-month lifespan.
Customer Review: Good product, but too many flaws Summary: 3 Stars
Received the monitor yesterday and used it overnight. So far, I have a few opinions.
1. The angle of the video is too narrow. We placed it on a shelf in the corner of the room, and its field of view is really small for my taste.
2. The sound is either off, or loud, or louder. Our old sound only monitor had a dial where you could set the sound as low or loud as you want. At night we like to keep it quiet enough to just hear our daughter, but with this monitor, there is not enough control of the sound. Sleeping with it next to us was a pain.
3. The remote beeping everytime you click an option on the menu us annoying and there is no way to turn that off.
I am neither pleased or dissatisfied with the monitor yet, although, I am having some buyers remorse with the price I payed. I'll give it a few more days, but otherwise, I am returning it.
Customer Review: Screen failed, return was a nightmare, new screen flickering Summary: 1 Stars
While the conevnient size of the hand held unit lured me in, the product never worked properly and is not worth the huge price tag. First the battery life is horrible, in less than one hour and it would go dead. You need to keep the display constantly plugged in to an outlet which effectively negates the benefit of the small portable size. The image quality is marginal at best and seemed to get worse over time. After a few months the screen went blank and would show no image at all. [...] While the thought of a small unit like this seems like a good idea, my experience with two defective hand held units would indicate that this product is either poorly engineered or cheaply constructed. I would avoid this monitor, it is way too expensive for a product that will break leaving you fighting with a company that does not want to honor the warranty.
