Baby Products Reviews of Safety 1st Easy Saver Diaper Pail

Customer Review: Stupid design
Summary: 1 Stars

I don't know how this product claims to be odor free. There is no way that its design could hold in odor. The lid has 2 openings, one for bag changing, and a small blue one for inserting diapers. There is a blue hinged 'gate' inside that you have to push the diapers and wipes through. which can be messy if the diaper isn't neatly rolled. I also hate that it snaps on my fingers as I push the diaper through. I tried letting the lid push the diaper through and that sometimes works, but it never works for wipes and again, it is messy if the diaper is messy. I ended up taking the blue piece out, which is much better.

I don't understand how the lid is supposed to be child resistant. It opens easily by pushing the small blue button. How is that supposed to be difficult for a child?

When you push the button to open the lid, it makes a loud rattle noise, which is the deodorizer chip clattering around. This is annoying at any time but is especially irksome when I'm trying to chage my baby in the middle of the night with a minimum of noise. I use my hand to slow the speed of the lid opening so that it doesn't clatter so much, but really, should this be necessary?

Right now my baby still hasn't started solid food, so odor isn't too big of a problem yet, but I will definately have to change pails before then. I received this one as a hand-me-down and although the mother who gave it to me is a fastidiously clean person, the plastic that this pail is made of absorbs odors and is permanantly stinky on the inside. Bleach hasn't helped. I read a reveiw that suggested this pail could be used as regular trash can after diapering, but I can't imagine this since it retains the diaper odor.

Customer Review: Not for Typical Use
Summary: 5 Stars

I did not buy this to use as a diaper pail but had another use in mind for it. I had been looking up Litter Lockers in the pet department when I found some suggestions on how to save some money and figured it couldn't hurt to try. I actually have this diaper pail in my house to use for cat litter disposal and it works great!! I did not want to get caught up down the road having to buy the expensive consumable bags for the Litter Locker and I had also read some reviews that the product was not that sturdy and could break. I am not cheap - but I wanted a product to get my money's worth from. I will no longer have to tie up the cat waste in plastic bags and run outside at every scoop! I have put this little baby right by the cat boxes and I'm all set - hopefully this will also initiate more frequent scooping. A few side notes to anyone wishing to try this out for themselves. The cats like to sit on it and therefore can hit the button to pop the top open - I'm waiting for them to knock it over and then I'll have to find a way to stick it to the floor. You need to invest in the more expensive odor control garbage bags but it's still a money saver compared to the Litter Locker bags. I did take out the little "odor dome" at the top because it closed in the opening too much for the scooper to fit in - go for a glade stick up if you need extra odor control!! And depending on the size of your existing litter scooper you may need to get a smaller one. Mine was a little too wide for the pop up hole but it was an easy switch to make to ensure you hit the hole instead of lifting the entire lid up.

Customer Review: Great for the Cost
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this pail over a year ago, and it's still going strong. I initially put all diapers (#1 and #2's) when my child was an infant but found the pail didn't hold the stink in very well, even before my child began solid foods. Now, I place only #1 diapers in it and have no problems with odor leakage unless the lid is left open. I do clean it once in a while (no more than 1x/month) with disinfectant and hot water, and this helps cut down on the smell when I open the lid to change the bags. The reason I purchased this over more expensive pails is I can use regular trash bags or recycled store bags. I use recycled store bags, which gives me enough room to fit two days worth of diapers and is just the right time to leave the diapers in there without having odor leakage. Also, the odor disks are useless, so I removed the plastic disc holder from the lid so I could fit more diapers in the pail.

PROS:
- Inexpensive
- No need for expensive refills or odor disks
- Just the ride size to hide in the corner of the room
- Attractive color
- Can store extra bags in bottom of pail for easy refill
- Easy to open

CONS:
- Noisy when smaller lid opens
- Prone to odor leakage
- Odor disks are useless

Overall, I've been pleased with this pail and would recommend it over more expensive pails. It does have drawbacks, but after trial and error, I've found ways around the most annoying ones. Highly recommend!

Customer Review: Not the best but pretty good
Summary: 4 Stars

I find that most people who post glowing reviews for baby items generally have a tiny infant and have not used it for a long period of time.

I have used this diaper pail for over 2 1/2 years now. That means my two kids have been eating solid food for about 2 years now, which is where "odor control" really needs to kick in. Because I never had a problem with odors until the kids started eating real food. That's about the time the odor disc ran out so I just inserted a glade plug-in. But now I don't even bother.

The reason I bought this pail and not the revered Diaper Genie was that it used regular trash bags and could some day be used as a regular garbage can if you took the lid off.

I have to change the pail twice a week and yes it can get pretty stinky. Yes, it is made of plastic so it WILL absorb odors. Here is the key: wash out the pail once in a while with a little bleach (I've only done this a handful of times, maybe once every two or three months). Also, when I change the bags, I spray the pail down with Lysol to kill the bacteria.

I much prefer a few more minutes of work for me than buying expensive refills for the Diaper Genie.

Also, after 2 1/2 years of opening and closing the smaller door, the hinge finally gave way but still functions all right. I am in the home stretch with diapers (maybe one more year to go) and don't see the need to waste money on another diaper pail because the hinge doesn't work perfectly.

Customer Review: Not JUST for Diapers!
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, so I am NOT reviewing this product as a diaper pail. My comments ought to prove relevant, nevertheless. I purchased this product as a replacement for my kitchen compost pail. The old one had worn out, and all the new ones were of a design that had carbon filters that serve no purpose save to require you to spend money regularly to replace them; while the old compost pail simply had a good lid and no odor ever escaped. But it got nasty over time and cleaning it was no fun, when that had to be done. When it wore out, and I was searching for a new odorless, no-filter pail, I found this diaper pail. Why not? The problem is the same, right? How to keep smelly stuff from stinking up the house. But this pail went the old pail one better: because you can insert a 13-gal garbage bag (which are easily available and cheap as dirt), the pail itself never becomes grungy. And odorless it is! More so that the old one, because the design of this pail restricts odors even when you open it to make a new--ahh--deposit. Further, the old pail, if the dogs got hold of it, opened onto the floor while this one stays shut. (As long as my dogs don't figure out how to push the latch). A great product and, as I say, if it works for compost, it ought to work for--shall we say--other smelly stuff?
