Baby Products Reviews of Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump BackpackCustomer Review: Absolutely love it Summary: 5 Stars
I've been eyeing this for a long time and decided to purchase this product a week after my baby was born. I rented a hospital grade after she was born (Medela Classic) and was surprised that the Pump In Style Advanced is even better than the hospital grade one. It's stylish, light weight (compared to the classic), small footprint on my nightstand (the space on the table is 1/2 size of a magazine), and it's very efficient. I pump 10-12 oz of milk each time, and it takes only 10 minutes to get the job done. I like the 2 minute let-down speed to mimic baby's sucking and then go back to the slower rhythmic speed. I usually have let-down in 10 seconds and pressed a button to get to the slower speed. They also sell hand-free kit but I decided just to use my write/hand to hold onto both sides while I read a magazine or even do emails. The only "con" I could think of is that the face plate came loose after I used it for 3 months, and moisture was trapped in the tubes. I didn't keep my receipts nor submitted any cards for warranty, but I called Medela's customer service anyway and they were very helpful. A few days later I received a new faceplate and never experienced that problem again. Overall I strongly recommend this product if you're looking for a very comfortable way to pump in a short amount of time. It's worth every penny.
Customer Review: Pump is OK, accessories don't last Summary: 3 Stars
I've been pumping using this system for about 7 months now, and am really looking forward to when my son turns 1 so I don't have to do it anymore. I bought this pump mostly because I had so many accessories for it already from a friend and the hospital where I had my baby. I guess that the pump works as well as any pump could. I've read reviews for many other pumps that claim to be "comfortable" but really don't deliver on that promise. My main complaint with this pump is not so much the pump as the stuff that goes with it. I like the backpack, but every strap that attaches to the zippers has broken off so I've had to attach key chains so I can open the zippers. Also, the power cord is very strange and essentially has kinked over these months. I think that for this product to have a 1 year warranty, all its accessories should also last for a year. I pump 3 times every day, which means 3 times each day I unwind and rewind the power cord so it will fit into its slot. That also means I unzip and zip the 2 zippers on the bag 3 times a day. So knowing that these accessories will take a beating, it would be nice if Medela made them a quality that would stand up to this. I hope to have more children and wish I could find a product that doesn't make me wish that formula was as good as breast milk.
Customer Review: Good pump, terible bag! Summary: 3 Stars
I knew I wanted to breastfeed my baby. I had shopped around and talked to several of my friends who breastfed and needed to pump while at work. Everyone suggested the Medela, so I bought one. They are a bit expensive. I love the pump! I am a nurse in an Maternity Department of a mid-sized hospital, I would suggest the pump itself to anyone. The bag on the other hand is a different story. I bought the backpack style because it was a better fit for my personality. BIG MISTAKE!!! My friends have the normal bag and have had no problems. My bag has come all undone at the seams. I only carry the items that came with the pump in the bag and not even all of it.(I don't usually carry the ice pack because there is a fridge at work and I go straight home.) I bought the pump a few months prior to having my son and didn't need to use it until he was 3 1/2 months old, thats when I returned to work from maternity leave. Within 5 months it was all tore out. I e-mailed medela and they responded that the warranty was only for 90 days from day of purchase. At 90 days I hadn't even had it out of the box. So now I just carry a crappy looking bag to work with me 3 nights a week. So go ahead and buy Medela, just not the backpack model! And don't expect any customer service if something goes wrong!
Customer Review: great double pump Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this a couple months ago. I cringed at spending this much on any breast pump, but needed to protect my supply. The double pumping is great and the backpack style is really nice. Everything works well so far.
Things I particularly like are: backpack style; zippered closure for pump body to quiet the sound a little; icepack container; bottles and lids; can use in vehicle with a car adapter (not included) making travel-pumping possible and easy.
Things that could use improvement: hoses often get condensation in them during pumping; top compartment needs to be larger to hold the icepack storage bag AND the pumping parts AND bottles all together (I have to squeeze everything in and try to fit bottles in side pouches instead); wish the pump was quieter, and had a one-touch button to go BACK to stimulation mode without having to turn the dial off and then on again. I also wish the icepack container were slightly bigger to hold pump parts between pumpings when they can't be washed right away.
I have not used the battery pack or the manual pumper and don't plan to, but I guess they're nice to have just in case. I much prefer the Harmony manual pump if I'm going to go manual though.
Customer Review: SUPERIOR TO THE MEDELA CLASSIC BREASTPUMP! Summary: 5 Stars
I used the Medela Classic Breastpump at the hospital when my baby had to be taken in for jaundice. The pump was 'OK', but after purchasing the Medela Pump In Style Advanced Backpack Breast Pump, I'm convinced that it's by far superior. My favorite feature is that you can set the suction force as well as the variation of the speed of suction. This works wonders for me as I find myself having to change the variation ocassionally in order to have the most effective production. It is also wonderful that it fits my (now) 44DD sized breast! In 20 minutes, I've got a minimum of 6oz of milk. I love the convenience of how compact it is that everything fits wonderfully in the backpack. I was hesitant at first to spend $290 on this pump, but I'm glad I did.
My husband had been worried for me as well since my milk production at the hospital was minimal - I had to spend at least an hour just to get 6oz. out! He took me to buy the pump and actually picked it out himself. When he saw how effective it was at home, he happily stated "I'm in love with that breastpump!"
If you have a hard time getting milk production going, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this pump. It's absolutely well worth the price tag!
