Baby Products Reviews of Playtex Premium Nurser Newborn Gift SetCustomer Review: After trying everything else, this is what REALLY WORKS!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have a two-month old baby boy. He has a very sweet temperament, and only cries when he wants to be fed or when he is gassy. Unfortunately, from the time he was 4 weeks old he started developing gas problems which progressively became worse. With the original Playtex nurser, my baby became very frustrated, because not enough milk would come out of the latex nipple. He would cry out of frustration, become tired, and fall asleep after only drinking one ounce. After sucking so desperately to get more milk out of the latex nipple, he would also become gassy. Initially, we thought the gassiness was from his formula, so our pediatrician suggested Mylicon drops which didn't work. Then our pediatrician asked us to try a lactose free formula, which didn't work either. Throughout this process we also switched to the Dr. Brown bottles. In the beginning, it seemed like it was helping, but after one week, my baby boy was getting gassier and gassier once again.... not to mention how time consuming it was to properly wash the Dr. Brown bottles. I would have gladly gone through all the tediousness of properly washing these bottles if they would help my son feel better, but unfortunately it didn't. Then, my baby's pediatrician asked me to try soy formula. My son was still gassy, so as a last resort with the bottles, my husband and I decided to buy the Playtex Premium Nurser since it had the silicon nipples which where different in shape from the latex nipples. He LOVES the silicon nipples, and so do I! He looks so relaxed while he is drinking his formula (it actually looks like he is breastfeeding), he doesn't cry from gas pain any more, he spits up so much less than before, and the bottle clean-up is as easy as can be. I highly recommend this system after trying everything else!
Customer Review: A wonderful bottle! Summary: 5 Stars
I have used these bottles once before with my daughter, now 4. After reading several reviews here, I have to say that I never had a problem with leakage. Make sure you screw the cap on tight as normal, the nipple is in the ring properly, you won't have a problem at all.
The liners do get expensive but I bought an off brand at Wal-Mart that worked just as well and saved us money. My 8 oz. bottles had a lever that you could push up on the liner and get the air out of the bottle (you do not need to use your hands except on the 4 oz. ones which is not difficult at all). I don't know if there are different Playtex Nurser bottles that do not have this lever but mine did and this was very convenient (we got them at Babies' R Us). The lever is a must!
The liners are awesome for traveling or quickly making a bottle for a baby that wants to eat NOW. This also frees you from constantly washing bottles (which any mother can tell you that they don't have all the time in the world to do this). Because you can push the air out of these bottles/liners, they are wonderful compared to a regular old bottle. My daughter never had problems with spit-up. My husband and I just ran the bottles under warm tap water and it warmed the bottle right up, no problem at all.
I was not able to breast feed my first daughter so I don't know how well they work with switching back and forth. I am now pregnant with my second child and will be purchasing these bottles again. I don't have my first set only because I passed them on to someone else because they deserved to see how well they worked.
I believe the reviews are very helpful but only you can decide what will work best for your child.
Customer Review: Trust me, you don't need a gimmick bottle Summary: 1 Stars
I'm a dad of 14 month old twins. I PROMISE you one thing - these bottles are purchased only by first time parents (like me). Anyone who's on their second or third would tell you to save your money.I realize that every child is different, and some burp up more than others - but they ALL burp up and they ALL get gas. Some more than others. Parents get so frustrated and worried about their babies that they try ANYTHING different. One thing seems to 'do the trick' when the problem was ready to stop on its own. We tried every bottle gimmick sold on Babies-R-Us. This one takes the cake. How has humanity survived so long before the advent of disposable liners? I warn you - your child will 'empty' his bottle, but when you screw the lid off, you will see the bag was no where near empty. This is because the bag collapses and creates pockets of food that never get eaten. Wonderful if you're pumping breast milk and trying not to waste any. Since our twins were 2 months, we have been using the plain old Evenflo bottles from any grocer. They cost about 99 cents each. They work great. There's a bottle, ring and nipple. All of the gimmick bottles have half a dozen parts that need to be individually cleaned, or come apart, or leak. Think about it - Playtex, Gerber, Avent, Evenflo - they all sell the same simple three-piece bottle, but they also sell some sort of state-of-the-art bottle that's supposed to cure all of your baby's ills. Why in good conscience would they continue to sell those cheap, gas-inducing, old-fashioned bottles? Because they work; because all of the repeat parents buy them; and because all new parents eventually need to buy a bottle that does what it's supposed to.
Customer Review: Not so good for traveling but the best bottle out there! Summary: 4 Stars
I found this bottle to be very good with saving time on cleaning. My son is 7 weeks old and and from the day we came home from the hospital he took to these bottles with no problem. He was getting hardly any air with his feedings and really never spitting up. For those who don't have the easy feeder here is a little tip. If you need to put the bottle down lay the bottle on it's side so the air doesn't get back in. I am now using the tri cut nipples for my son (the slow flow wasn't giving him enough) and they are FANTASTIC. The nipple is air tight so no air can get in even if the bottle is upright. We tried the ventaire bottles for 1 week and I was very dissappointed. The stage 1 nipple did NOTHING. My son kept sucking and sucking and nothing was coming out of the bottle. I then went to the stage 2 nipple and he spit up and was the fussiest he's ever been during his feeding. The only down side I found with the Playtex Nurser bottles is 1- It can be costly buying the drop in liners (which is well worth it to me if my son is a happy eater). 2- Travel warmers only got the outside of the bottle warm not the drop in liners ( so now i learned to keep the bottles at room temperature while I am out). 3- I tried mixing the powder formula for those days when I was on the go and the powder didn't mix well so my son was spitting up chunks and he was getting alot of gas after shaking the bottle (which also happened with the playtex ventaire bottles so i stopped using the powder formula and just stuck with the ready to feed). I have learned that it is all trial and error until you find the right bottle for your baby. I recommend buying 1 bottle of each and see what is right.
Customer Review: Don't waste your MONEY Summary: 1 Stars
Playtex claims that the large bottles hold eight ounces, but this is only true if you fill the bottle up to the very, very top...and even then, you aren't able to get a full 8 ounces of formula in. There is definitely no way to mix 8 ounces of water with 4 scoops of formula on the go in these bottles. Which means for a mom on the go, she would have to carry an extra container around to mix the formula in. Then she would have to pour it into the bottle.
The liners are another problem. You may feel that your baby has taken the full bottle only to find that when you take the nipple and ring off that there is anywhere from half an ounce to a full ounce still left in the liner. This is because as the baby eats, the liner collapses creating pockets that hold liquid.
Not to mention that you have to "push" all the air out of the bottles. Which can prove to be VERY difficult if your hands don't fit inside the bottle like my husbands.
There is also a problem with heating the bottles. You can't heat the formula directly in the Playtex bottles because of the liners. Which means you have to pour the formula into another container to heat and then transfer the formula back to the bottle. Just added steps that are very frustrating when you're in a hurry to get a bottle to your baby.
My daughter also constantly spit up because of these bottles. I have recently switched to Avent bottles and have NO problems with spitting up. I could kick myself for spending 20 bucks a month on liners instead of just buying new bottles a long time ago.
I would NOT recommend these bottles to anyone.
