Baby Products Reviews of Playtex Premium Nurser Newborn Gift SetCustomer Review: A great bottle by Playtex! Summary: 5 Stars
Our twin sons are now almost 11 months old. We used liner bottles with our daughter, and son as well (almost 6 and 3 1/2) and found them to be the best over all!
FEATURES
* Our Playtex bottles had the little platfom (like the bottom of a bottle) and had a tab sticking OUTSIDE the bottle and was attatched to the platform through a slit in the side of the bottle. The slit went up the entire length, so you could lift up the platform, and squeeze the excess air out!
* The nipples that came with ours (we dont own the gift set, but about 5 of the bottles) were all mixed. I highly reccomend buying 1 or 2 of each nipple at the beggining, and purchasing more of the one that your child likes later on.
* The bottles dont have numbers to see how many ounces the baby has had. This is a bit fustrating, but we "estimate" since we know how much formula is in the bottle (mix it up in cheaper bottles and read the ounces)
* We found another brand of drop-in liners that cost less than the Playtex. I HIGHLY reccomend the drop-ins, but try to find a cheaper (but equally good) brand.
* The bottles are easy to clean, since you can just hand-wash the "bottles", and we throw the nipples and rings into the special baskets on the top rack of our dishwasher.
* They really do help with gas, all four of our children had reflux, and bad gas problems. The liner bottles (especially these) are the "only bottles" to use. They worked better than VentAires (annoying to clean all of the parts) Avents (just didnt work) and the Dr. Browns (HORRIBLE cleaning and leaking!)
* If you want to throw these bottles in a diaper bag, you do it like with any other bottle. Mix the formula and make a bottle. Put the cap that comes with them on top, and throw them in the bag (I reccomend keeping a full bottle on the outside, so it doesnt leak). If its a "long trip" than keep the milk/beverage in a storage container (for breast milk) and fill the liner up when baby needs it.
* Our boys are still on the bottles, and these were GREAT for babies learning to hold their own drinks! We even bought the ones without the platform so the could hold the inside better, and they both work now that gas isnt as big of an issue. Although I reccomend that once the baby is self feeding, or around 9+ months old, to purchase Avents or a cheaper bottle, its sometimes easier.
All in all we would do it all over again for baby #5, we LOVE the Playtex, and so do the boys!
Customer Review: the only bottle that doesn't leak! Summary: 5 Stars
That is why I love this system. It is true that you can't mix 8 oz in the bottle, but you can do it in a mesuring cup and then pour it in, or pre mix the formula and save it in the fridge. If you are on the go, then I guess you can buy some other bottle that acomodates you. That is what I do at least. (the pooh ones at [local] stores are great) I've tried them all and this is what I got: Avent: it is very good, but for some odd reason it started leaking after some time. Changed the nipples and it still leaks some times. Evenflo ultra (or whatever it is called): love the bottleshape and the nipple shape... hate the cap. IT COMES OF! constantly. I've lost them all. Also they leak. Gerber (the fat ones): the fist time I used it worked great, I was so happy. THe second time I used this bottle the nipple collapsed! playtex ventair: They leak like heck! I HATE THEM SO MUCH I WON'T EVEN TALK ABUT THEM (still have 3 unopened ones I got as a shower gift) disney babies: I have two pooh bottles that I love. They are my going out bottles, No leaks, collapses and they make 8 oz and beyond. The bad thing is that they don't sell the nipple replacement for these bottles. THe packaging even says "can be used with avent nipples" And I tried it with an Avent nipple... and it collapsed! plytex premium nurser: I love it because my baby loves it. I breast fed my baby for 6 months and then I stoped. I had to start giving her formula at 1 month because I didn't have enough milk for her, So I started trying different bottles then. Well about a month or two ago I bought one of these playtex premium bottles, because I needed bigger bottles. My baby LOVED IT. I'm convinced it feels like mommy to her, because she gets that nursing face of joy. It is a little cumbersome to heat water first and then mix the milk but it takes me about 10 seconds more to prepare the bottle, and honestly, she deserves those 10 extra seconds. The bottle doesn't leak, and the milk warms or cools down really quick when sumerged in cool or hot water. So this is what I can say about bottles so far. I forgot to mention that you can interexchange nipples between playtex premium, evenflo ultra and the fat gerber ones, but I didn't have a good experience with this. They either collapsed or leaked. Thank you for reading Macarena
Customer Review: Great for the breastfeeding mom Summary: 5 Stars
I find these to be quite convenient for giving my baby breastmilk from the bottle. With the Playtex One-Step storage system, I pump directly into the liner and stick it in the fridge, and then I can pop it in a nurser when it's time to feed. My husband and other caregivers are quite glad at the ease of putting it all together when they're juggling a crying baby.
As advice to others, I wonder whether the original nurser gift set might be better, because it comes with multiple different kinds of nipples, whereas this set only comes with the silicone slow flow. We've lucked out, in that my baby seems happy with it and switches easily from breast to bottle and vice versa; however, it might have been handy to be able to try different kinds to see which the babe likes best. The shells in this set are more modern looking, but I can't see how that matters. I'm pretty sure the pieces for both are interchangeable. Nice that the silicone nipples in this set (and all the other pieces; latex nipples are less hardy) are dishwasher safe, and can be repeatedly boiled for sterilization if desired.
The short shells in this set are fine, and it's easier to reach in the bottom to squish the liner with your fingers (to help it collapse; the drop-in liners are relatively more shape-holding than regular liners, so they can suck in air), but usually my baby has more than 4 oz at a sitting; in the 8oz size shell, the burper is nice (it's hard to reach in when the liner is less full), but it doesn't squish the liner all the way, so we end up taking off the shell and using our fingers for the last 2 oz or so. I have never had any problem with leaking.
I like the disposable bit of this system, since the nipples, collars, and lids take up enough space and cleaning effort without having a bunch of bottles around as well. Liners are pricy if you use a lot (about $5 for 50 at Walgreens), but since we only use a bottle a day, it doesn't seem like much. They also freeze easily. This set came with one adapter for a breast pump (I use an Ameda Purely Yours, and they fit together perfectly), and the One-Step comes with another, so I can use the double pumping without buying any other pieces. Overall, I'm very happy with this set.
Customer Review: happy baby Summary: 5 Stars
This system was my last option with trying to keep my 2 month old happy without so much gas and cramps. Spitting up was awful and it happened with 98% of all burps. I used playtex nurser 5 yrs. ago with my first for 3 months and loved the easy cleaning but had a hard time with keeping the air out so i stopped and went with evenflo and got lucky with the right nipple soon after. With my 2 month old i started with avent because i have family using it and they love it, well my baby spit up as much as she took in most of time and while burping she would even gag. I guess the nipple was a bit long for her. I didn't have much trouble with leaking out unless i shook the bottle and the cap was too tight. But her bib was always wet because formula was always dripping down her chin and i would hear air as if she was sucking it in. I tried tri-flo, the nipples collapsed. Then vent-air, nipples collapsed. Then a family member suggested that i try Dr. Browns because her collic baby did great with them, they didn't do well with my baby, she cried through the whole feeding. The nipples need work, slow is too slow and medium too fast. Extra holes on the slow still didn't work. Finally i came around and told myself that i still have the original playtex nursers why not try, especially after reading great mommy stories. I went and bought 2 premium bottles and the slow flow silacone nipples and her first feeding with the system was 98% better. She had little gas during the feeding, less crying and smiled in between burping. The only crying she actually did was wanting the bottle. After reading some mommy stories i got some good tips. Keeping the air out is easy now, i just keep the bottle on the side and it's ready to go when i need it. Burping isn't constant throughout the day with spitting up following and she burps so much easier without pain. Even when she passed gas she would cry but not anymore. My happy baby is 90% better and i'm confident that she will be gas free thanks to playtex nurser.
Customer Review: Best bottle system on the market Summary: 5 Stars
After doing our pre-baby research, we registered for and received this set. We started using it with no problems, and then my daughter started having problems with gas. Naturally, we blamed it on the bottles. Many bottles and wasted dollars later, we returned to the Premium Nursers and have never looked back. In fact, the more I watch other moms with other bottles, the happier I am.
Sure, you spend a few extra bucks on liners. But the time and energy and dishwasher costs you save are well worth it. We have 4 bottle shells that we use and about 10 nipples. The shells rarely get dirty and so rarely have to be washed. Likewise for the rings and caps. We usually run a load of nipples with the dishwasher every day and that's it. Empty liners pop out with no mess and are recyclable to boot.
When we go out, I pack 1 pre-assembled bottle, and an extra liner and nipple/ring/cap setup. It weighs nothing and takes up way less space than multiple bottles. On the fly I can just pop out the dirty liner, throw it away, pop in the new one and screw on the new top.
As an added bonus - I think my husband may actually have invented this ingenius use for the Premium Nurser. Note: this can only be done with the Playtex brand liners, not generics. When my daughter was struggling with swallowing too much air, my husband figured out that we could fill the liner with the desired amount of milk, screw on the nipple, and then squeeze all of the air out of the liner, collapsing it down until it was vacuum-tight with only milk in it. Keeping a finger over the nipple hole, pop on the airtight cap. Voila - a completely air-free meal for baby. This really helped cut back on her air swallowing. Generic liners work fine for all other purposes.
Last but not least, we like so many other parents, felt that many brands were drowning our daughter in milk. The Playtex slow- flow nipples worked great for her. She is still using them at 4 months.
