You will be reading a lot of reviews about breastpumps. A lot of the information provided in these reviews is totally subjective - a matter of opinion - whether the pump is comfortable, whether it's affordable, if the little black bag is stylish enough, etc. However, there is one objective standard you should be looking for: is the pump reliable? Does it work, day in and day out, every day?
I have a 3 month old baby. In the past three months, I have gone through *four* motors and one power source with the Playtex Embrace. Each has broken down in a matter of weeks. This happened whether I was pumping three times per day or ten times per day. And each time a motor/power source broke, it meant that I was dealing with clogged ducts and excruciating pain until it could be replaced. In addition, two of the motors also malfunctioned by spontaneously jumping from low suction to infinity, without warning, without responding to the control keys, and I would have to literally rip it off my breast. I would compare this experience to having my breast suddenly caught in a vacuum cleaner; it was beyond painful.
Whether you're looking for a breastpump to use at work or you're exclusively pumping, you'll likely be pumping several times per day (if neither of these applies to you, you might be just fine with an Avent manual pump). Where will you be when the Playtex pump stops working? Will it be 3 am? Will you be traveling? Will it be 5:00 pm on a Friday and Playtex's customer service is only available during business hours? What will your backup plan be?
As a new mom, you do NOT want to deal with the sort of pain and frustration that a broken pump (or four) will bring. So remember, it's reliability that's key - everything else is just personal preference. And, if you're not nursing, have a manual pump on hand just in case.
