Baby Products Reviews of Playtex Drop-Ins Original BPA Free Nurser Newborn Starter SetCustomer Review: NURSING MOMS, USE WITH CAUTION... Summary: 2 Stars
I am a breastfeeding mom, and I tried and tried to get my baby to take a bottle - I tried every brand. She finally did take the Playtex orthondontic nipple. HOWEVER, the way her lips formed around the nipple caused her bottom lip to curl up under it, and anyone who is an experienced breastfeeder knows that in order to have a good latch-on at the breast, your baby's bottom lip needs to curl OUT, not in. This in turn caused me to have sore nipples when I was nursing her. There is nothing you can do to change how a baby sucks on a Playtex nipple; that is how they are designed. It has taken taken considerable effort to reteach her how to latch-on, and even now (after four months) she still occasionally will turn in her bottom lip while she is nursing. (I introduced this bottle at FIVE months, and she had always had a good latch-on from day one.) I highly recommend (if you are a breastfeeding mother and wish to supplement, for example) using Avent - the nipple is shaped like your natural nipple and is designed to simulate nursing. (OR use the new Playtex soft-shaped silicone nipples - they seem to be shaped the same way.) Bottom line - if you still want to breastfeed and do not want sore nipples, you may not want to use this bottle system (at least the nipples).
Customer Review: Awesome system Summary: 5 Stars
I have tried these for the first time with my fourth child. I wish I would have used this system for all my children. I have used all kinds of bottles from the old glass bottles to Vent-air to Avent...many types with my first 3 children. I decided to give these a try considering I was tired of scrubbing bottles. My little girl switched to these very easily from the breast, it helped tremendously with her colic by cutting down on gas (switching from regular formula to soy helped to, plus I had to start avoiding all milk products while breastfeeding)plus they are so easy to clean and manage. I have had no leak problems like I did with Avent...Vent-air #1 nipple would collapse plus my son would have projectile spit-up after feedings when I tried to switch him to the #2 nipples (awful system)...absolutely no problems with the original Playtex bottles. My only minor complaint is trying to fit my fingers in the bottle to collapse the liner to rid of air...very hard if you do not have tiny hands. We bought the easy-feed bottles with the lift in the bottom to aid in releasing air...alittle easier. Store brand liners work just as well as brand name liners...I have seen no difference except in price. Target brand is very good. I would recommend these bottles to everyone!
Customer Review: Great system Summary: 5 Stars
We used this bottle system for our first child and plan to use it again for our second. The bottles themselves are very durable and certainly will last for 2+ children. The nipples are fairly durable. We replaced all of them after about 6 months. Once teeth start coming in, their lifespan (as with all nipples I suspect) start to decrease. The system comes with at least 3 nipple types, newborn, infant, and the orthodontic. The newborn nipple was simply not providing sufficient flow. We quickly changed to the infant nipple. That worked OK, until will tried the orthodontic. Our daughter sucked the bottles dry with the orthodontic nipple. We replaced all the nipples with the orthodontic nipple and used those until the transition to sippy cups. Playtex offers 2 types of bags for the bottles, the formed bags and the "traditional" flat bags. The formed bags are easier to use and determining the amount consumed is more reliable, but they are much more costly. Also, the formed bags don't keep air out as well as the flat "traditional" bags. The flat bags can be easily pinched to remove air and they are much less expensive. The flat bags are also offered as store brands (even less expensive than Playtex) from most major pharmacies and grocery stores.
Customer Review: A great BPA-free Bottle Summary: 5 Stars
I like these smartly-designed bottles a lot. They have reduced my son's colic and gas discomforts dramatically by reducing the amount of air he takes in while feeding. My son is primarily breastfed, but my wife and I supplement his breastfeedings with pumped breastmilk and with formula. The Original Nursers are made from polypropylene, which is a BPA-free plastic. The liners are also BPA-free although I'm not sure what kind of plastic they are manufactured from. Unlike some other corporations in the baby products industry, Playtex Baby is serious about customer support. I have called the customer service number several times now and have gotten to talk to a knowledgeable person in every instance. If you want to experiment with these bottles to see if they will work for you, I would suggest that you stop in at Target or Walmart. They sell trial bottles for under $4 that come with either a latex or silicone nipple and 5 drop-in liners. Unfortunately, the trial bottles that come with silicone nipples are the premium nursers, which are made from polycarbonate, a non-BPA-free plastic (this isn't necessarily a deal breaker for me because the milk never comes into contact with the polycarbonate).
Customer Review: The best bottle for breastfeeding babies! Summary: 5 Stars
I have used a lot of different kinds of bottles on my three children. I lived in a small town when I had my first child 7.5 yrs ago, and the Playtex nursers were not available to me. I did use them with my second child and when my third baby was born, I knew that I wanted to use these when I gave her a bottle. She was totally breastfed but I kept her used to the bottle so that her daddy and grandparents could feed her also. I too tried the Avent brand of bottles and to say the least was rather disapointed! They leaked all over everything! I like the Playtex nursers because of the nipple variety. It is much easier to buy the next size or kind of nipple then to buy a whole new set of bottles. I like the fact that you can push all the air out of the bottle before feeding the baby. I also have to say that I like the bags better than the drop-ins because the measurement markings are clearer on them. If you are going to be giving your baby a bottle at all, I would highly recomend skipping all the new fancy bottles and go with something that has been proven to work well in reducing air intake while your baby eats! Go with Playtex nursers! They work great!!
