Baby Products Reviews of Playtex Drop-Ins Original BPA Free Nurser Newborn Starter SetCustomer Review: Preferred by babies!! Summary: 5 Stars
After trying just about every bottle on the market, I found these are the best. These bottles have been around awhile for a reason. I have 3 children and all three of them have preferred these bottles over all the others. For the sake of trying something different this time around I went searching for a regular bottle this time. Let me tell you, I wasted time and money and should have stuck with what I know works. I tried (Avent, Dr. Brown's, Ventaire, Gerber Comfort Hold, Gerber Nuk wide bottles). Here's what I found: My little one would fuss with the Dr. Brown's and Avent and had difficulty latching on to both of them, she would choke and cough from the Gerber Comfort Hold bottles because the flow was too fast even on the slow flow nipples, she couldn't get anything out of the Nuk bottles and the Ventaire nipples where too hard she couldn't form a good seal on the nipple. My opinion with the Dr. Brown's bottles are that they are not doing anything magical that the disposable bottles won't do because the nursers don't create a vacuum allowing air into the bottle while the baby is eating, so I think the extra cleaning with the Dr. Brown's, is a waste of time. I also don't feel like the vent that sits on the top of the tube in the Dr. Brown's bottles can get totally clean even with their little brush. Which means sterilizing it everytime. The positives about the nursers: The flow rate on the nursers are just right. My baby sounds like she is nursing when drinking from them and actually fusses when I take it away from her to burp her just like she does when I take her off the breast. The silicone nipple is very soft and she seems to really like it. No problems switching from breast to bottle. I think it is a close second to the real thing--the breast. The drop in liners for these bottles are very convenient and while it is an extra step when making the bottle it is very quick and easy. The amount of time saved in washing regular bottles and in heating them up more than make up for the time it takes to drop a liner in. These bottles heat up much faster than a regular bottle does which is appreciated by Dad and Grandma when they are feeding a hungry baby. My recommendation is to not spend the money on all those other fancy, expensive bottles and stick with the tried and true. Spend more time with baby and less washing bottles!
Customer Review: Good bottles, few problems! Summary: 4 Stars
My strictly bottle fed 11 month old has used these bottles from day one and has done fine with them. I saved money by buying them at thrift stores - about half of them I bought still in the boxes and the other half barely used. I ended up switching out the older nipple design (square top) with the newer nipples because I liked the design better. It seemed to me that the newer design is more correct for suckling. I also bought a lot of new boxes of liners at the thrift store too! My daughter suffered from mild gas, but nothing major. I liked these bottles because of the liner idea and my best friend had used them.
I wish the nipples would have come in more than two stages though because when my daughter hit about 4 months, the slow flow were too slow and the fast flow were too fast. I ended up putting straight pins in the slow flow and boiling them with the pins in to open the holes a little more. It worked fine! The only time the bottle ever leaked was when I used the drop-in liners and that's because it wasn't seated right on the rim of the bottle. Many reviewers complained that the drop-ins don't hold a full 8 ozs. and they are correct. To solve this problem, I simply stuck with the standard liners and I don't buy the Playtex brand. I buy the Parent's Choice (PC) brand at Walmart. Another thing to be careful of is the measurements aren't always correct. I bought the Target brand 4 oz. liners and realized (after several bottles) that the 4 oz. mark on the liner was only 3 ozs. The PC liners are correct!
All-in-all, I like these bottles but am getting tired of the liners. I am currently reading reviews of other bottles and considering switching with our next child. I'm really liking what I'm reading about the Dr. Brown's, but will possibly try a couple other brands as well. I'm realizing that saving tons of money isn't always what's best for my daughter. We'll see!
Customer Review: Easy to use and worked great for my brestfeeding baby! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay - I was one of those new moms who had no clue about which bottles of the many types to use for my baby. I read all of the online reviews and decided I would get a couple of each type and try them all. I have the Avent bottles, Dr. Brown's, Gerber, you name it, I have a ton of them.
I exclusively breatfeed my baby and everyday he gets a bottle with his medicine in it along with the bottles I pump for when we will be somewhere that's difficult to breastfeed. In my opinion, this system is HANDS-DOWN THE BEST.
Here's what I like:
The liners are sterile so you can always be sure your baby is drinking out of a clean bottle.
Nothing to wash but the nipple and ring. Its so quick and easy, especially when you are in a hurry or in the middle of the night when its harder to think straight. When he's done, just toss the drop in and wash the nipple and you are ready for your next bottle.
My baby didn't struggle with swallowing air using this bottle like the others I tried because you push the air out. It worked much better for him than the Dr. Brown's bottles. Using these, he didn't struggle with gas pains afterwards.
He switched with no problems from a very early age between the breast and this bottle type. It comes with various nipples to try and the breastfeeding nipple works great for him.
Here is the only downside:
You cannot pump directly into the liners - but that is not a big deal to me. I pump into the Medela CSF bags and store those. When I am ready to make a bottle, I pour it out of the CSF bag and into the liner. It became routine and its not a problem for me to take that extra step.
Good luck in making your choices about bottles for your baby but from a new mom whose tried them all, these really are the best all around.
Customer Review: Love the convenience Summary: 4 Stars
I knew from the beginning that I would be using these bottles. What I love is the convenience. No bottle washing, just toss out the liner and wash the nipple. It's especially nice when you're out and about or a long trip and cannot necessarily wash a bottle after use. What's nice about this starter kit is that it comes with 5 different nipples of varying flows and types (latex and silicone) that I was able to try without having to purchase separately (this is good because of my complaint below).
I also like the Playtex one step storage system that you can use with these bottles (refer to my review on Playtex one step storage kits). With the pump adapter that comes in the storage kits, you can pump directly into the liners.
I do have a few complaints about these bottles, though:
!) As I mentioned, it's nice that it came with all the different nipples because finding the best one to use with my baby was a chore and a half (refer to my reviews on the Playtex NaturaLatch slow flow latex, Playtex NaturaLatch slow flow silicone, and Playtex NaturaLatch Orthodontic Medium Flow).
2) The clear liners make it difficult to see the exact amount that is in the liner if you are pumping directly into the liner, but you learn to estimate more or less. When you're breastfeeding you have no clue the exact amount the baby is getting anyways. If you're really anal, just pump into a regular bottle and transfer to drop-in liner.
3) Although convenient, the disposable liners do create a lot of waste. This would be my biggest complaint.
Overall, happy with product because of the convenience.
Customer Review: Because of Three Issues, We Stopped Using the Playtex System Summary: 2 Stars
We've had this system for 1 month now, using it daily. It's worked pretty well, although there are three big issues we have with it.
1. If you aren't filling the bags completely full, then you have to collapse them after putting the nipple on to get rid of excess air. If, like us, you are only putting in 2 oz at a time, this is a royal pain. If you have to put the bottle down for a minute, say to adjust positions, check for poop, or wipe your newborn's chin, then air gets sucked back in through the nipple, and you have to press it out before feeding again. Neither my fingers nor my wife's are long enough to do this (and we have normal sized hands), so we have to use the end of a smaller bottle or tube to press. It's really a pain, and becomes extra important at the end of the bottle.
2. Because you have to collapse the bottle like this, it becomes very, very difficult to measure how much your newborn has drunk. That's a major problem initially when the difference between 1 and 1-1/2 ounces is important.
3. This is the biggest: we've had the system fail once, catastrophically breaking the seal where the nipple screws on, and spilling milk all over. That just happened today, and we will not be using the system again, as that sort of failure is not acceptable. It was probably because the bag didn't seat properly, and it slipped out from where it gets clamped down. But the rim on the bags where this happens is very narrow. Too narrow. It is a design flaw, and, from our perspective, a fatal one.
